Not just the Pope, muslim leaders were just as backward and remain a problem in getting safe sex messages out and treatments approved.

And yes, aids rates have dramatically declined in Africa since the Catholic church dropped it's opposition, which removed the moral authority governments were using to deny spending on aids control and treatments. Depends what you read to get numbers but wiki article suggests around 30% drop in the last 10 years.
