People who "hate Americans" are bigots. You can hate what some Americans do, or what the American government does, but hating every individual born in the states regardless of their views or behaviour is extremely judgmental and furthers stereotypes. You have to realize nations are always going to be heterogeneous, and the U.S is probably among the least homogeneous countries in the entire world. Somewhat stable, but greatly heterogenous all the same.
That said, I probably do disagree with a large portion of Americans on certain matters.
Your precautionary stance on nationality most likely isn't necessary in most European countries though.
