Jets Calling That Timeout on First Down was Horrible!

I always thought about this when a team is down and need to stop the clock with under 3 minutes left with 2-3 timeouts.

Am i right to assume that the Jets shouldn't have called a timeout after the first down play? I'm not sure but after a whistle on a running play, the clock resets to 40 seconds i think and there was 2:53 on the clock to start the play. I'm a Jets fan but hate the Jets but saw this situation and cannot believe they called a timeout after 1st down. So the Steelers would have to run a play before the 2 minute warning on 2nd down and it would be either 3rd down or 1st down with 2 minutes to go and the Jets would still have 2 time outs left.

So even though they got the 1st down on 2nd down, the Jets just lost 40 seconds of the clock. Right now its 3rd down for the steelers with 2 minutes to go and jets have 0 timeouts. If they didn't call a timeout after the first down, they would still have 1 timeout right now.

Does anyone know how BIG of a mistake this is?

Jets been doing this all year (see Chicago game). You're right, it was a mistake. But didn't matter in the end because they couldn't get the stop.

Yes but if they did stop them, they would have stopped the clock and Steelers would have to punt at around the 1:54 mark. Without that timeout, if they did stop them, Steelers would have been able to run the clock and then punt around the 1:09 mark. No one else noticed this?

with 2 timeouts you should ALMOST NEVER call a timeout on 1st down.

They had all 3 timeouts. If they got the stop on 3rd down, they would have had ~1:45 to score a touchdown.

Hey Lou, what mattered the most was there was 2:53 when it was 1st down for the Steelers. If there was 2:35, then they have to call a timeout. But because each play takes 6-7 seconds and then the clock resets to 40, they had to run a play before the 2 minute warning and then the clock would be stopped right after the play.

What they did there was if they stopped them on 3rd down, they have 1:09 to score a TD or so from my calculations.

You're genius. Why no one ever brings that up is amazing. When I first read your post I thought there was a flaw in your reasoning. But after thinking it through, you are right. The Jets should have allowed the clock to run after the Steelers 1st down play.

my point is using a different logic than OPs but his logic makes more sense in this scenario. again, almost never should you use a timeout on 1st down with only 2, especially if you think the other team will run it on 3rd down no matter what (which is what jets thought the steelers would do)

yep I remember thinking what a horrible call it was.......only had 2 time outs after he made the 1st down...burned one and were down to one should have kept the clock running then the steelers would have ran a play with 2: 13 left on clock now call a time out Mr. Ryan!! 2nd down now run a play Timeout # 3 Mr. Ryan!!! 2:04 is left 3rd down.....run the play.......2min warning!!! 4th Down!!! To that I slam my head set down!!!!!!!!!! now pretend pitt dont get the 1st down and all goes well for jets.....only 1:10 would have been left on the clock by the time they got the ball back, by using the timeout when they did they burned 45 seconds

Jets needed that 3rd down stop regardless. They were in a position to get the ball but let Big
Ben scramble and get that throw. Not much more you can ask for in this position.

I did come up with a scenario that makes calling a timeout immediately the right decision.

If Pitt goes 3 and out, calling timeouts after each play would leave more than 2:35 on the clock.

I think the Jets had to play as if they would stop Pitt from getting a 1st down.

Only after Pitt got the 1st down that you can look back and say he should not of called timeout after 1st down.

You are going under the assumption Rex Ryan is a good coach. He is a loudmouth fat sob. He showed so much class in the last minute by throwing his headset to the ground. I loved every second of seeing this classless clown in agony. Only wish it coulda been a 45-3 beatdown.

missed this the first time around.

1st timeout is questionable, but I'd also say mistake.

2nd timeout isn't a no brainer. I believe Pitt threw it 3 times the whole 2h leading up to this drive and it was first down.
