NFL's New Rule: Lowering The Helmet Defensive Player - 15 Yard Penalty

Is anyone watching Philadelphia VS New England game?

    New England's first drive?

What did you expect that defensive corner to do? If he takes him on shoulders high... the running back would of steamed rolled him. This is a horrible rule... and it needs to be reconstructed or thrown out. There's absolutely nothing he could of done. I played football.... we were taught to tackle and get low... Your helmet/head will always come close to the opposing players body.... it's just the way it is.

Not even sure why the NFL has defensive players on the field anymore. They already couldn't do anything without a flag and now they can't even hit anyone.

Money, I was going to start a thread about this, actually.

I'll just hijack this one instead.

With this rule, you've got to figure there are going to be tons of penalties and/or missed tackles the first couple of weeks. Do we blindly pound overs in every game?

I've noticed there isn't a total under 40 for week one.

Exactly. How many swings of momentum will happen during a game now? Especially from a spread/line point of view. A game will never be in the bag until 0:00

    15 yard penalty is huge

This lowering helmet rule needs to change. I understand on a pass... a corner laying out a wide receiver... "bang bang play." Ok. But one on one a RB against a corner.... a corner has no other choice but to go low... and it's a natural reaction for the RB to go low as well.... to take the corner's hit on. lol I mean... soon this will end up being flag football.

This is what former players and media created when they started hounding the league about concussions. The NFL has no choice but to implement stupid rules like this which make it almost impossible to tackle in some situations. Now everyone will bitch that the rules are stupid, but we all tune in.... Because we're degenerates.

Posted this earlier and the league has mentioned this. It's similar to other rule changes.

Probably best to take overs in preseason...lol.

It won't come up AS OFTEN during the regular season.

Expect far more of this penalty to be called in preseason than regular season.

Some players remain defiant and don't want to change the way they tackle.

There will be an adjustment, but it may just happen in the preseason as they are almost all professionals there.

Might as well rename it flag football if you can't attack a player using your helmet as a battering ram.

    Some guys will be defiant.

They played football all their lives, now at this level have to change what they do?

    Some won't change.

It's weird, because perhaps some of these guys, if they always had to play with this rule, wouldn't even be in the NFL.

    That's how drastic it is.

Does college have a similar rule in place? I know you can't spear a guy, but what about just tackling?

When and where will players learn to tackle this way?

Yeah, work hard to get to the top then asked to do a whole different gig.

This won't sit well with many and there is risk of injury as they are forced to change suddenly in a high speed game.

I have never seen lowering the helmet to hit a player in high school. In college they have the targetting rule where you get ejected if you do it. This tackling technique is only used in NFL so the players learn it in practice from older players.

Seems like it's a bit more than just targeting. They really want that head out of there, more than college, more than targeting.

Maybe I have that wrong, though.

But players have complained that they have never played that way.

Shot, NFL will be out-lawed in 20 years.

Next step is to expand the field. Make dimensions similar to CFL, to give more space.

The problem will be that kids and the "farm system" that goes from pop warner through high school will be demolished.

Warning labels don't work for kids, it's just off limits until they are old enough to make the decision for themselves.

With no youth tackle football, things will be different.

It's the new rule that they will use to manipulate scores.

This might be the most fukked up NFL year from a wagering stand point ever... you're going to have some crews that will call it on every play if they see it. You're going to have a 2nd crew who calls it 50% of the time. You're going to have a 3rd crew call it like 25% of the time. This is why we're ALL GOING TO GET NUTTY this season.

What about a RB lowering his head first? It's just common for a defensive player to lower his head... you're just trying to prepare yourself for the tackle and go low... you don't mean to hit the guy in the head.

If an offensive player stays high (doesn't crouch low).... then how the fuk can a defensive player hit his head? Another way to look at this.... penalize the offensive player for crouching down and getting low first.

This all sounds stupid.... and ridiculous.... but it's not the defensive players fault... He has to tackle you... and stop the ball. What else do you want him to do?

They don't any new rules for that. There's already a penalty on every play, like basketball.

They can choose when to call it. Maybe one guy is too aggressive, too much holding, they call it an chill him out, otherwise, they have total control every play.

    Every play.

This is obviously the shit they want to eliminate. They will overdo it in preseason like they always do so that we won't cry about it during regular season, like in this thread. Let's see how it works out first during regular season, and we shouldn't act like the referees doesn't discuss this matter after each and every game, trying to make it better.

    Wow, just wow.

This will be eased up on in regular season I'm sure.

This is not spearing or anything like what is called in college.

Where will football players learn to tackle the new, "correct" way?

Trying to change the game at high speeds could result in more injuries by season's end.

    In my opinion.
