Dunphy leaves Penn, takes over at Temple
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Fran Dunphy took over for Hall of Fame coach John Chaney at Temple on Monday, moving a few miles across town after guiding Penn to nine NCAA tournament appearances.
The 57-year-old Dunphy won 10 Ivy League championships and three Big 5 city series titles. He went 310-163 record in 17 seasons at Penn.
Penn is one of only two schools that won its conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament nine times since the 1992-93 season. This season, the Quakers lost to Texas in the first round.
``I am excited about the opportunity to coach at Temple University and look forward to the challenges that lie ahead in keeping Owl basketball among the nation's elite programs,'' Dunphy said in a statement released by Temple.
In reality, Temple hasn't been among the nation's elite for half a decade.
Dunphy is replacing the 74-year-old Chaney, who retired last month after guiding Temple to 17 NCAA tournament appearances in 24 seasons. Temple went 17-15 this season and has missed the NCAA tournament for the last five seasons.
