What have We Learned This Week?

Welcome to Week 5 of CollegeOverUnder's What have We Learned This week.

There was some interesting action that happened this week. Teams are beginning to jockey them selves into their positions. And some teams are now listed as LOCKS to make the NCAAs. But lets also look at some smaller programs still trying to make noise.

On Monday night the OverRated Missouri Tigers went into Kansas and got handed a beating.

While Pittsburgh stole a road win @ a struggling West Virginia.

On Tuesday night Tennessee packed up their baggage and went home losers to the Kentucky Wildcats.

In the IVY LEAGUE Pennsylvania hit the road to take on Princeton and lost in OT.

In Out of Conference Action Xavier hit the road to take on Georgia and got a huge out of conference victory.

While in the Colonial Athletic George Mason continues to roll on hoping to make another run at the NCAAs this year.

In the Missouri Valley The Salukis of Southern Illinois went to Wichita State and stole a devasting win from the shockers. SIU was also missing 3 starters to make it even better for SIU.

The Wednesday Night Showcase was a pretty wild night of College Basketball.

North Carolina @ Duke was the headline game and Duke came back from 16 down to steal the win in the end in a high scoring affair. Seth Curry stepped it up and is running hot now.

Texas ran Oklahoma over and continues to be the hottest team in the country IMO.

While Louisville got handed a loss at the Fighting Irish's home Court. Notre Dame continues to impress. I had this team ranked in my preseason top 25 and new they would give havoc to teams in the Big East.

Villanova @ Rutgers ( LOL is all I gotta say )

Georgetown @ Syracuse- Both overrated teams duked it out but the Hoyas stole the win.

Utah State @ Idaho (OverRated out of there ASSES will lose to St. Marys )

Memphis @ Central Florida- Well the Knights continue to struggle

In the SOCON Conference Davidson @ Wofford the 7-7 Wildcats got a win at Wofford.

    While Charleston rolled Elon over.

On Thursday an Overrated UCONN team went to St.Johns and lost to a surging power in the Big East. Welcome back the NCAAs Steve Lavin , That is all I have to say.

In the SEC Vanderbilt pulled out a win over Alabama in a tight win.

While Coastal Carolina of the BIG SOUTH won another game against Presybytarian to improve to 14-0 in conference play.

But the Liberty Flames are 12-2 in the Big South and looking to give CCU a run in the Conference tourney.

In the West Coast Conference Portland went to Pepperdine and lost by 2 points.

While Klay Thompson wasnt enough for the Washington St. team which lost to a talented Stanford team.

    On Friday

Siena went to IONA and lost in the MAAC

Fairfield went to Manhattan and got another victory

The #1 Ohio State Buckeyes went to Wisconsin on Saturday and got handed their first lost of the season. Trademark win for the Badgers.

Pittsburgh went to Villanova and stole a road win by 3 points in a low scoring affair.

Syracuse lost another to Louisville this team

While Notre Dame went to South Florida and rolled them over in an easy victory.

Kentucky lost to Vanderbilt in a tight nit game

Tennessee lost to Florida by 1 point

In the Atlantic 10 the Richmond Spiders got another win to improve to 9-2 in conference play.

But Temple went to Dayton and got another win to also be 9-2 in conference play.

Belmont continues to roll over every team in the Atlantic Sun moving to 15-1 now

But North Texas lost to Western Kentucky

James Madison went to George Mason and got handed a considerable loss again.

In the Big West Conference Long Beach State improved to 10-2 handing Cal State Northridge a loss on their homecourt.

Sunday Action was small but entertaining enough

Duke added another W to their scorecard

Conneticut got a much needed win defeating the Friars

And St.Johns hit the road to take on the Overrated Cincinnati team who I knew sucked balls the hole time. Good win St.Johns

Xavier got a monster win against Duquense

And St.Johns hit the road to take on the Overrated Cincinnati team who I knew sucked balls the hole time. Good win St.Johns

They will make it to March Madness, and flame out like your typical Lavin coached team.

Not quite Ill back a senior driven team happily in their last chance at glory. Your comment is a bit off

This has probably been one of the best years for College Basketball in forever.

    1. You cannot win a championship with a 6-man rotation: As long as coaches like John Calipari and Thad Matta over-recruit one-and-dones their programs will have a ceiling.

    2. FSU might be 3rd in the ACC, but without Chris Singleton they are not a tournament team. They might not even be one *with* him considering how poor their offense is.

    3. Based on the way the SEC Tournament is set up, Alabama has a legit shot of winning it.

    4. When the Big XII lost Colorado and Nebraska, the conference came close to annihilation. In my opinion, it was a small price to pay to FINALLY see Kansas and Texas play twice a year.

    5. If Tim Hardaway Jr. makes the same sophomore leap Darius Morris did for Michigan, no force in the Big Ten could stop him.

    6. Mick Cronin is done at Cinci. To go from taking a Rick Stansbury-esque chance on Lance Stephenson last year, to benching Yancy Gates during the most important moment of the season last weekend, to his abject lack of ability to compete with Ohio State for recruits, he's just not good enough to survive.

    7. Pitt is pulling away from the pack in the Big East...and I *still* don't see them getting past the Sweet Sixteen.

    8. Before everyone goes around trying to crown Wisconsin for beating Ohio State, let's not forget how terribly they've played on the road this year.

    9. Expect more MWC, A-10, and CAA bids than usual this year.

    10. Expect fewer WAC, WCC, and Missouri Valley bids than usual this year.

Bonus Tip: There was a time when being a McDonalds All-American meant something. The 2002 Maryland Terrapins are the only team in the last 30 years to win a national title without a McDonalds All-American on the roster. 24 of the other 29 champions had at least 2. Every national title in the last 20 years has been won by a coach who has recruited at least 5 McD AA's in his career. While McDonalds All-Americans are still important, the selection committee as of late has more and more overtly favored recruits who commit to a select few schools like Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Texas, and Ohio State. Does anyone really think the Wear Twins would have received the award last year if they didn't originally commit to UNC? Does anyone really think Amir Williams for Ohio State is as good as Kosta Koufos and BJ Mullens, much less Greg Oden or Jared Sullinger?

I see the point your going for here and its a good point, but its not entirely true. A major handicapp playing mainly a six man rotation yes, but other teams have pulled it off before and gone all the way (especially if its a team who "seems to get the calls").

Cal and Matta have both made the final game. Cal should have won, was it 7 missed freethrows out of 8 to allow the overtime? Sure he had a couple of older players but all throughout those years he "over recruited one-and-dones". A few just didn't pan out and ended up sticking around to assist the new one-and-dones. Cal will get this setup again and be back in Final Four very soon. Matta may well get there this year.
