    Some good advice above.

    I personally don't agree with flat betting, but it's an essential step until you can do a few important things yourself. To justify varying your bet size for some plays, you need to be able to quantify your edge on that bet. That means being able to generate fair lines yourself, having a systematic approach for comparing those lines to what's offered from the books, and then determining where the advantage lies. This might come from a stats based approach that's heavy on math, or directly from handicapping experience, but you need to know where a line should be before you see what the books are offering, and understand why the line has been set where it is.

    That being said, you only get so many options to really attack lines when you have the advantage. You need to be able to recognize them and play accordingly. Most successful handicappers have two kinds of plays. The ones they like and play normally, and the ones they love where they press that advantage.
