Celtics paying Brown most in NBA history is shameful

    https://www.sbnation.com/nba/2023/7/...-nba-deal-ever

    303.7 million for 5 years

most expensive deal in NBA history

what a joke. Guy turned the ball over constantly in playoffs
he is not even among the best players in the league.

Celtics organization is not what it used to be.

Yeah Agreed. Brown a good player but not worth 60 Million a year. Unreal.

NBA salaries as a whole are a total joke, just the way it is now. People wonder why NFL rbs and other positions whine and moan about their salaries. NFL is light years more popular but not a single player has a yearly salary above Jaylen Brown haha

Biggest extension isn't it? Not biggest deal? Celtics are doing what they have to do. They are not a FA destination for stars -black stars I should say ...similar to Utah. Realistically they could do a lot worse.

I wonder if this has an effect on chemistry with old issues resurfacing. Brown feels he's on the same level as Tatum, and now he's getting paid like it he will feel empowered. No Smart around anymore to call them out for selfish play.

'ball, this is a great post. I hate Brown.

Let's remember this post when the season starts. Chance to fade the Celtics.

What do they do with the money instead? Lose him and then what? Free agents don’t go to Boston that’s been known for many many years.

    It's a criminal amount of $$. It's like a guy holding up a bank.

Easy, let's bang out some NBA winners this season.

Obviously the Celtics don't think they can upgrade at the PG/SF position, so they decided to (over) pay Brown.

    agree

i was shocked by that contract

i think a big part of it was "mea culpa" for dangling him as trade bait for two straight years.

A lot of people on here don't know their ass from their elbow. Maybe you lot think Mr loyalty "for so long" Lillard would be a better #2 to Tatum.

Celtics are favourites to win the "NBA Cup".

I reckon the NBA Cup will, in time, have all the prestige of a summer league championship.

They are neglecting guards by going so overweight on the SF/PF with Tatum and Brown.

They need a point guard. Not that Smart was a real point guard, he wasn't. It's just bad structure.

But where do they spend the money? They invested in him early, if they just let him walk, then they get nothing except maybe C level return on him through a trade then the Celtics flounder to like 6-8 and go out first round. Then Tatum leaves in 2 years because the team is no longer competitive and now it’s a full rebuild

But who can they realistically get right now? I think they are stuck with Brown so they paid him with the guarantee they would at least be competitive in the East

You should be sitting in the front office in Boston instead of typing here on a message board.

^^Exactly. The way the negotiations roll out, this has been happening since Mike Conley in 2015 or whenever that was. And everyone went GASP!!! HIGHEST PAID EVER!!! The deal is the deal gents. Teams aren’t going “we think you’re the greatest player in the history of the universe therefore we are going to compensate you accordingly.” The deal is the deal. They don’t pay him the hometown max, he’ll go somewhere else and get a max. They wanna keep him obviously so this is what they do and it’s not the hit you think it is to their bottom line because they have more money to give to players as a result of the negotiations. Then someone else comes along soon enough who will be the highest paid player ever and y’all will all go OH NO WHAT THE FUKKIN BLOODY HELL MATE and the threads just never get old I tell you what

    This.
I'm OK with teams extending their own talent.
I think he's overpaid, but so what?
It's not like he doesn't put in all the work, he does.
Good on him, he got paid as they like to say.

This. I think their problem, is that they had a virgin coach with little coaching support last year. My mind is that they hired 3 assistants all of which have eyes for his job. Seems like a recipe for disaster??

They need a point guard. Please find us a Rondo less 10 years. Perfect fit.

It's about $$/ADVER. Barring internal coaching issues noted above, This team is EC finals bound, and consequently a cash cow for owners. All they actually want.

Check out the WAS NFL whatevers, Ballmer, etc, and sports ownership is a cash cow, why? advertising. Runs the world we don't live in but watch and only hopefully live in. The $$ is insane and now the players are getting their piece.

It's more about timing. It was sad when KAT signed extension for 52 mil/yr making him highest paid. at least brown is a max effort player. In the near future many all stars will be grossly overpaid. I remember when Kobe signed 2 yrs for 50 mil and that was a big deal. the nba salary is accelerating at a high level with the tv deals and players union.

if Brown is making 60 million a year you can imagine how much the owners are raking in?

Celtics were in deep shit as brown is one of those not right in the head clowns who would of chucked a massive sook if he wasn't offered the max as guy would be offended and bring up unrelated history shit and cause heaps of negative attention to the team/front office, I reckon Boston would of traded him but would of only got peanuts whilst Lillard pretty much said no to the Boston interest in him

Many next contracts will be the biggest. Just depends who is next up for max money. A guy like Anthony Edwards is smiling. No reason he shouldn't get as much or more. Also watch Tyrese Halliburton, Pascal Siakam, Tyrese Maxey, Desmond Bane, Tobias Harris, Porzingis. All coming up within the next season for wtf money.
