    Can anyone guide me?

Guys, can anyone please teach me what should I "keep in mind" when I"m trying to bet on NBA Games? I mean, I try to do research and stuff but I know that I still don't get what should I look into. I also just bet on the +/- part. I'm not confident in betting on the O/U parts. And those two (+/- and O/U) are the only ones available on my bookie. I'm from another country (Philippines) so that's it. Basically I'm still a newbie so maybe the experts or the veterans can help me out here. I really appreciate it! Thanks!

Note: I lost around $80 last year and I stopped. I know it's just $80 but I'm still just a student so I'm just really gambling my money here. Haha. I just started last Friday. My record for this season so far is only 2-2. I lost yesterday cause I bet on Cavs and Brooklyn.

You need to watch the games and google nba handicapping before you begin putting money on these games.

    If you're serious about learning:

    1) Scheduling, to identify good and bad spots for teams where one team will be a lot more tired than the other.
    2) Matchups. ie: One team is a very good 3pt shooting team playing against one that has poor perimeter defense, etc.
    3) Momentum. Is one team running hot now after a bad start? or coming off a comeback win that helped build confidence?

Honestly, if you're not an experienced sports bettor in other sports (following the market, not just making picks), and you don't have a decent sized bankroll available that can be lost without affecting your daily life, you shouldn't be betting. Inexperience will take your money away quickly, and becoming overconfident after a couple of wins will bury you.

Hey, I saw your thread and was going to reply but I wanted to make sure that both of my picks hit before giving you the info. I have been betting for a little while, but I really started handicapping last night and today. I asked for some help yesterday about how to handicap and set your own spread and I got no responses so I went on google and I found some good info. I hope this helps, because I had to search for my stuff and I don't want another newbie handicapper to be in that spot. Here was my right up for the Pacers game tonight.

    http://www.sportsbookreview.com/forum/nba-basket...n-tonight.html

I thought that the Pacers would win by 13.5 and 5Dimes line was -3.5, I paid up from -110 to -118 to get the Pacers at -3 because this was my first time really capping. The Pacers ended up winning by 20.

About an hour before the the Hornets game I handicapped it and here is my writeup:

    NBA handicapping
    12/19/12:

    New Orleans hornets:

1.) Avg points scored last 4 games: 95
2.) Avg points scored last 4 road games: 95
3.) Avg points scored last 4 home games: 92
4.) Avg points scored last 2 meetings: only one meeting (105)
    5.) Avg rebounds last 4 games: 37.25
6.) Avg offensive rebounds last 4 games: 10.75
7.) Free throw percentage last 4 games: 81.15
    8.) Avg turnovers last 4 games: 13
9.) Avg points allowed last 4 games: 100.75

    LA Clippers:

1.) Avg points scored last 4 games: 98.25
2.) Avg points scored last 4 road games: 111.75
3.) Avg points scored last 4 home games: 98.25
4.) Avg points scored last 2 meetings: only one meeting (98)
    5.) Avg rebounds last 4 games: 45.25
6.) Avg offensive rebounds last 4 games: 12.75
7.) Free throw percentage last 4 games: 72.275
    8.) Avg turnovers last 4 games: 12
9.) Avg points allowed last 4 games: 86

The Clippers win 7 out of 9 categories and should win. Hornets: -5.75 Clippers: 12. My raw spread is 17.75. My buffer is 1. My spread is 18.75. vegas spread is 14. Take Clippers -14.

So I thought the Clippers would win by 18.75. I bought them at -13 on 5Dimes because once again, this was my first night capping and I wanted to lower my risk of a push. The Clippers won the game by 16.

I think these will be very helpful. All the team info such as scores and rebounds, etc. I just find on espn.com
So I think the handicapping has been going well, with a 2-0 record. But, I know not to get cocky. The other things I would recommend are I have heard that if a team is on it's 4th game in four days (maybe it was the third game) they probably aren't the best idea to bet on, and also make sure to check the rosters before placing your bet. While I didn't handicap the game, I thought the Knicks would cover the 6 point spread tonight, because they are balling hard. I got the idea that a lot of people on here were backing the Nets. Then of course when it was announced that Carmelo Anthony would play, I became almost certain that the Knicks would cover the spread and possibly win outright, which they did. Melo is The Truth right now, and while I used not to like him, he is playing like a team player now and he is seeing where it is getting him. He isn't doing any ball hogging Kobe Bryant crap, and his team is killing it. I didn't bet on the Knicks game, hence why I don't have a right up. But, I just thought they would win.

I hope this info helps you, and is better than "Bet Kings +3 tonight". TEACH A MAN TO FISH....

Here is the link I used to gather my handicapping basics and then I went from there (it is from a another website, but when I couldn't get help here google led me to this other site, this is a helpful link so hopefully it stays up here), look at Raidermex's post:

Just remember the thing you want to do is find value and value is found with spread betting. Unless the ML is close to even with the favorite being between -200 and even and the underdog being between even and +200, I would always recommend spread betting. The cool thing about sports betting is that while the outcome of the game still depends on the players, if you put in the time handicapping you gain knowledge and as they say "knowing is half the battle". With good handicapping, you have a leg up on others who are essentially just flipping a coin. Don't piss away your money, always put in work. Also with sports betting, like with my future profession of trading at an investment bank, if you win a bet you get the right to feel like "the only guy in the room who knew what was up that day". But, when you lose the flip side is if you are being brutally honest with yourself "you were the fool who couldn't see the play that day". Finally, I think of handicapping sports as the same as a scientist doing research and having an "educated guess" about something. In conclusion, proper handicapping is the way to go. Good luck!!!
