The 1st day of the Philippine Cup pits crowd darling Barangay Ginebra San Miguel against Globalport Batang Pier.

Both teams have new faces and with it being the 1st game of the season, rust and chemistry will come into play. Both teams are boasting an explosive backcourt with Globalport being led by Gary David and former Ginebra player, Willie Miller while Ginebra is virtually guard heavy and practically any among Caguioa, Tenorio, Helterbrand and Cortez can start and produce. This will make the backcourt of Globalport work hard on defense which they are not really know for.

Frontcourt wise, Globalport has the advantage having Rabeh Al-Hussaini and rookie Vic Manuel who will both go head to head against the undersized Hatfield, Maierhofer and Raymundo, bodies and bulk alone, the latter 2 Ginebra big men are at a disadvantage already but all 3 are hustlers and will always fight to retain possession.

For the 3 position, Ginebra has a clear advantage as they have 2 sensational rookies in Jensen and Ellis. Both are high flyers and hustlers. For Globalport, I doubt who will start at the 3 position but they have Guevarra and Deutchmann whom I think are a level below Ginebra's 2 rookies plus Ginebra still has the versatile Ababou.

Overall, Ginebra has the better team on paper, depth and hustle. We might see a close encounter in the 1st quarter or maybe even the whole 1st half because of rust and chemistry issues plus the fact that Ginebra always starts slow but once the 3rd quarter begins, you can expect them to pull away.

Ginebra has acquired exciting players and looks like they are going to revert to their original run and gun style of basketball but along with that I think their additions made them better not only offensively, but defensively as well. They are the best defensive team last season and I think that will not change as it brought them success. Globalport is a team who also has a high octane offense last term but with a new coach in Glen Capacio, who was a defensive minded player in his prime, I don't think he will allow Ginebra to run because manpower alone, Globalport is undermanned as they do not have the depth and Ginebra can definitely sustain a fast paced game as they are really guard heavy unlike Globalport who only has David, Miller and Manuel to lean on.

    FINAL VERDICT:
Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings -5.5 @ 1.96 for 10 units
    Under 188.5 @ 1.97 for 10 units

2nd game day of the PBA offers a double header.

1st game pits Barako Bull Energy Cola against Air21 Express.

Basically both teams have lots of new players which I think will affect the whole game. Air21Express was the worstteam last year but this yeartheir lineup has been upgraded although they will still have to slug it out for them not to become cellar dwellers again.

Air21 have at least 5 new players who will log significant minutes and with 5 new players plus a new system for them wherein they have to fit in, 1 full game will not be enough to adjust. Barako Bull have the luxury of having anumber of veterans who are holdovers from last year's team whom they can depend on in the last quarter and when things seem in a disarray.

Barako Bull is slightly a better team and shpuldco eout here victorious and with an adjusting Air21 team, -5.5 is just enough.

For the scoreline, I think the bookmakers made a big mistake by putting over 190 on the board as both these teams are not known for their offense. I think the line was inflated because of the 200 combined points scored by Ginebra and Globalport.

It will be best to grab the under on anything over 190.

    FINAL VERDICT:
Barako Bull Energy Cola -5.5 @ 1.961 for 10 units
    Under 194.5 @ 2.010 for 20 units

2nd game of the PBA doubleheader gives us Rain or Shine Elasto Painters against Petron Blaze Boosters.

Rain or Shine Elasto Painters are the champions of the Governor's Cup which is an import laden conference. They had a great import then whom they relied on heavily but for this conference, there are no imports and that will be a problem for them to look for a go to guy. Their 2 best players? Gabe Norwood and Jeff Chan. If you watched the games of the Philippines in the 34th William Jones Cup basketball tournament and the Fiba Asia Cup championship, you will notice that they were key players. Right from winning the Governors Cup which went the full 7 games followed by 2 international campaigns then after just a 2-3 weeks rest, fatigue will definitely be a factor.

    Who are they up against?

Nothing but a LOADED Petron Blaze Boosters. If only you are fa iliar to the league, you will know and very well know that Petron's 10 best players can start for any team. IMO, they are the favorite to win the All Filipino Cup and they only got better with the addition of the top draft pick, June Mar "The Kraken" Fajardo.

    FINAL VERDICT:
    Petron Blaze Boosters -1 @ 2.080 for 20 units
    Petron Blaze Boosters +1.5 @ 1.892 for 20 units

Honestly, I seldomly bet on such and considering it is the All Filipino Conference, meaning there are no imports each of the players point totals will increase. Since it is still the start of the season and with a lot of new players in each team, you really cannot tell yet what role they will be filling in.

With that, you better start with small stakes.

    Okay, my thoughts:

Barako Bull Energy Cola vs Air21 Express
Sena, Isip, Taha and Baclao will be fighting for positions. Whew, it's really hard to tell because none of them really stands out so playing time will depend on how they are playing and their production goes with it. My call is James Sena under 8.5 points.

If Danny Seigle will have less playing time, Ronald Tubid can produce more but I think over 8 pts on Ronald Tubid is good enough.

Petron Blaze Boosters vs Rain or Shine
    Jeff Chan under 14.5 pts
    Alex Cabagnot under 13.5 pts
    Arwind Santos under 15 pts
    Points Awarded:

james06 gave kneighfe 2 SBR Point(s) for this post.

Just go small okay? It's the start of the season and roles are not pretty defined yet. It's still a testing out period for teams.

Petron Blaze Boosters lost badly as they played poorly in the 2nd half. Poor execution and sloppy defense were the culprit. If you guys watched the game you will get disappointed with how they played because it islike they do not know their identity. Last night was actually not because of the players that fhey lost but it was a tacticians' battleand Coach Yeng Guiao got the better of Coach Olsen Racela.

    Tomorrow is another day.
