    11/12/2010

As if celebrating Claiborne Farm’s 100th year anniversary in Kentucky weren’t exciting enough, members of the Hancock family now have something extra special to celebrate. Their homebred colt Blame, who descends from a historic female family associated with the farm for nearly 60 years, defeated the great Zenyatta in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) at Churchill Downs and might have clinched Horse of the Year in the process. At the very least, Blame, who has two other grade I wins, in the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill and the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga, has clinched champion older male honors. Claiborne races Blame with Adele Dilschneider, whose grandfather, John Olin, won the 1974 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) with Cannonade.

Blame, who defeated Zenyatta in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 6, will stand for $35,000 at Claiborne Farm next year. The 4-year-old son of Arch, won four graded stakes this year, three of them grade Is—the Classic, the Whitney Handicap, and the Stephen Foster Handicap. “We have always tried to help breeders in the marketplace,” said Claiborne bloodstock manager Bernie Sams. “We are committed to setting reasonable stud fees and to capping the number of mares bred.” Arch, who also stands at Claiborne, got a bump in his stud fee to $30,000 from $25,000 for 2010.

Vale of York, Alexandros retired; Darley reveals 2011 stud fees

Darley announced that VALE OF YORK (Ire) (Invincible Spirit) and ALEXANDROS (Kingmambo) have been retired and will join their roster of stallions in 2011 on Thursday. The operation also released the fees for its 23 stallions who will stand in Europe for the 2011 breeding season.

Vale of York, who scored in the Stardom S. in his third career start, defeated five previous Grade 1 winners winners when capturing last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) for Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin. Prior to his U.S. debut in the Breeders' Cup, the bay also ran third in the Royal Lodge S. (Eng-G2) and second in the Gran Criterium (Ity-G1). He traveled to Dubai to make his sophomore bow in March, finishing fifth in the Al Bastakiya at Meydan, and will now retire to Kildangan Stud in Ireland for the forthcoming breeding season. Vale of York will stand for a fee of €5,000.

Alexandros scored three black-type victories during his four seasons of racing, taking the Prix de Cabourg (Fr-G3) and Prix Roland de Chambure as a juvenile and adding the Al Rashidiya (UAE-G3) this season. Also during his juvenile year, the chestnut was third in a high-class running of the Prix Morny (Fr-G1), and Alexandros progressed to be Group 1-placed on several more occasions, most notably in the 2009 Lockinge S. (Eng-G1) when defeating Twice Over (GB) (Observatory) and Paco Boy (Ire) (Desert Style).

Alexandros, who will stand at Haras du Logis in France for a fee of €4,000, is from one of Sheikh Mohammed's foundation families, that of the famously tenacious racemare High Hawk, top sire In the Wings (Ire) and stallion of the moment, Dubawi.

Calder Casino & Race Course will hold its annual Florida Million Nov. 13, featuring eight stakes races for Florida-breds. Total purses for will be $1 million for the stakes at the Miami Gardens, Fla., track. That includes $400,000 from the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association from its fund for breeders’ and owners awards for Florida-breds. The feature race, as usual for the Florida Million, is the $150,000 Carl G. Rose Classic at 1 1/8 miles on dirt for 3-year-olds and up. It has six entrants, and the probable favorite will be Duke of Mischief, if he runs in the race. Trainer David Fawkes also is considering Duke of Mischief, a 4-year-old son of Graeme Hall , for the Clark Handicap (gr. I) at Churchill Downs Nov. 26 and the Hill ‘N Dale Cigar Mile (gr. I) at Aqueduct Nov. 27. “We are going to stay at home,” Fawkes said the morning of Nov. 12. “It looks like there will be enough speed to set an honest pace, and I expect him to run a big race. He likes this track.”Eibar Coa, who is at Calder for its Tropical Meet, will ride. Duke of Mischief has three 2010 wins--all in graded stakes. Those races were: the Fort Lauderdale (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park, the Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II) at Oaklawn, and the Phillip Iselin (gr. III) at Monmouth Park.

Buddy's Saint, a graded stakes winner at 2 that had been nearing a return to the races, broke down in a workout on the Belmont Park main track Nov. 14 and was euthanized, according to a statement released by the New York Racing Association. The 3-year-old son of Saint Liam, trained by Bruce Levine for owner Kingfield Stables, had an impressive 2009 juvenile campaign, including wins in the Nashua and Remsen stakes (both gr. II) at Aqueduct Racetrack. According to Dr. Anthony Verderosa, chief examining veterinarian of the NYRA, Buddy’s Saint fractured his left shoulder while breezing over Belmont’s main track. In his only race this year, Buddy’s Saint finished ninth as the 9-5 favorite in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream in February. He was subsequently sidelined with a bone chip in his right front ankle that required surgery. Buddy's Saint had returned to the work tab on Aug. 28 and had 11 published workouts, the most recent being four furlongs at Belmont in :48.67 on Nov. 8.

Live racing at the nation’s premier harness track would end under a recommendation from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s panel on the future of casinos and racetracks in the state. A commission chaired by developer Jon Hanson released a supplemental report Nov. 15 saying there is no way New Jersey can support two state-run tracks. For that reason, it proposes ending live racing at Meadowlands and consolidating it at Monmouth Park. The plan also calls for the two tracks to be sold to the private sector. Meadowlands would be used as an off-track betting facility under the plan. “We have reached the conclusion that there is no viable self-sustaining industry model based upon two government-operated racetracks,” the commission wrote. “Consequently, we present a direct and difficult solution to a problem that has been in the making for decades.” Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak said the Republican governor is studying the recommendation, and he declined further comment. The task force said Monmouth is set to lose $6.6 million this year, and Meadowlands an additional $11 million. The proposal would allow a six-day Standardbred meet at Meadowlands next August. Standardbreds would race 30 days at Monmouth in the fall of 2011, and have a 70-day meet there in subsequent years. Thoroughbreds would race 59 days a year at Monmouth from May to September. It would take about $4.6 million worth of investment and upgrades to get Monmouth ready for the consolidation.

BC: No Action Until Life At Ten Probe Done

    By Blood-Horse Staff
    Updated: Friday, November 12, 2010 9:34 AM
    Posted: Thursday, November 11, 2010 2:15 PM

Breeders’ Cup issued a statement Nov. 11 saying Kentucky regulators have authority in a probe surrounding the performance of Life At Ten in the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup Ladies' Classic (gr. I) and that it won’t decide on future action until the investigation is completed.

The 5-year-old mare finished last in the Ladies' Classic as the second choice in the wagering at 7-2. The usually speedy Life At Ten broke from post one under John Velazquez but had no run; she wasn’t persevered with throughout the 1 1/8-mile race, which was won by Unrivaled Belle.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission said its investigation involved interviews with the parties involved, but no formal statement of resolution has been issued.
“The Breeders' Cup adheres to the highest standards in safety, security, and testing procedures to protect both our athletes and the integrity of our competition,” Breeders’ Cup said in a statement. “The Breeders’ Cup World Championships are conducted under the jurisdiction of our host site and the state of Kentucky has authority in this issue. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has advised Breeders’ Cup that it is conducting an investigation of the pre- and post-race events in this year’s Ladies' Classic.

“The Breeders’ Cup is working with the KHRC in its investigation and awaiting the final report of the KHRC before deciding what steps we will take moving forward in the management and protocols of our Championships.”

Trainer Todd Pletcher said the day after the race Life At Ten may have had a reaction to the bleeder medication Salix, which is administered four hours before a race. The KHRC has said Pletcher nor jockey John Velazquez “ voiced any concerns they may have had regarding Life at Ten to any racing officials, veterinarians, or the outriders prior to the running of the Ladies' Classic.”

Velazquez told ESPN just before the race the filly didn’t seem right. The KHRC hasn’t addressed the comments the jockey made to ESPN.

The incident led bettors to question whether Life At Ten should have been scratched and all wagers on her refunded. More than $300,000 was wagered on her to win; when exotic wagers are factored in, the figure is in the millions of dollars.

Owner: Life At Ten Should Have Been Scratched

    By Blood-Horse Staff

In the latest salvo in the imbroglio over the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (gr. I), the owner of Life At Ten said the filly should have been scratched prior to the race at Churchill Downs.

“Life At Ten, without equivocation, should have been scratched from the race,” a statement released by owner Candy DeBartolo and her racing manager, David Vance, said.

PARTIAL OF THE REPORT.....the rest is repeat of above post.

    Champion Forever Together Retired

    By Blood-Horse Staff
    Updated: Monday, November 15, 2010 3:21 PM
    Posted: Monday, November 15, 2010 3:07 PM

Forever Together, who was voted the 2008 champion turf female after winning the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT), has been retired from racing to become a broodmare for owner George Strawbridge Jr.

The 6-year-old daughter of Belong to Me is boarded at Arthur B. Hancock III’s Stone Farm near Paris, Ky., and will be bred to Smart Strike . When bred to Belong to Me mares, Smart Strike has sired this year’s leading 3-year-old male Lookin At Lucky and 2010 grade II winner Papa Clem.

Campaigned by Strawbridge’s Augustin Stable and trained by Jonathan Sheppard, Forever Together was a two-time stakes winner on the dirt before she embarked on a career on the grass. She won her first three races, including the Forward Gal Stakes (gr. II), and then was beaten a neck in the Stonerside Beaumont Stakes (gr. II). After losing her next four starts, she was switched to the turf and promptly won the Reluctant Guest Stakes the year of her championship. Forever Together also captured the First Lady Stakes (gr. IT) and the first of two consecutive runnings of the Diana Stakes (gr. IT) leading up to her victory in the Filly & Mare Turf.

Forever Together went winless in six starts this year but managed to place in four graded stakes. She finished sixth in this year’s Filly & Mare Turf but was beaten just two lengths. She was retired with nine wins and a dozen placings from 26 starts and earnings of $2,957,639.

White Fox Farm is the breeder of Kentucky-bred Forever Together, whose dam, Constant Companion (by Relaunch), is a half sister to four stakes winners and three stakes producers, including the dam of grade II winner and successful sire Broken Vow .

I just read this at vegas odds and was going to add clip but saw you posted......

What stood out to me was the PLAN would allow a private sector to take control?

    Millions lost at Monmouth/Meadowlands.

I was at Pocono last night and there wasn't a parking spot to be found @ 8:30. Went into Horse section and counted 15 people!

Good Idea Gremlin, we can/I will post all horse news in this one thread

Santa Anita Derby richest of 'Great Race Place' features

Santa Anita Park, which opens for its 74th winter/spring season on December 26, 2010, will offer a blockbuster stakes program featuring 46 graded stakes, headed by the $1 million Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 9. The Derby is one of a total of nine Grade 1 events that are scheduled to be run during Santa Anita's 76-day meeting which will conclude on April 17, 2011.

Santa Anita will offer two Grade 1 races at seven furlongs on opening day: the $250,000 Malibu S. for three-year-olds and the $250,000 La Brea S. for three-year-old fillies. The $150,000 Sir Beaufort S. (G2) for three-year-olds at one mile on turf and the $100,000 California Breeders Champion S. for two-year-olds at seven furlongs, will also be a part of a huge opening day program.
"We've added $450,000 to our three-year-old program, which makes Santa Anita the nation's most attractive avenue to the Triple Crown," Santa Anita Racing Secretary Rick Hammerle said. "Along with the news of increased purses, and due in large part to the fact we are returning to a natural dirt main track, we're getting very positive response from horsemen and fans from all over the country."

Hammerle also noted that MI Developments' (MID) recently announced Preakness 5.5 (million) incentive program should prove to be of direct benefit to those racing at Santa Anita.

"The Preakness 5.5 is going to be a big plus for us," Hammerle said. "It's (an incentive for) people to run in the Santa Anita Derby and in our Derby preps."

Hammerle and Santa Anita Director of Racing Mike Harlow believe the Preakness 5.5 provides ample incentive for horsemen to run in the Robert B. Lewis S. (G2) on February 12 and/or the San Felipe S. (G2) on March 12, en route to the Santa Anita Derby.

"If you run in and win either the Lewis or the San Felipe and go on to win the Santa Anita Derby, you've got a shot a huge payday," Harlow said. "By running in and winning either of those two preps and then winning the Santa Anita Derby, you're eligible to win the $5.5 million bonus, if you win the Preakness (S. [G1]).

"When you factor in that we anticipate a 25 percent increase in overnight purses, which gets us to a total distribution of about $425,000 a day, people are seeing, hearing and recognizing that Santa Anita is going to be a great place to run this winter and spring," Harlow added.

Other important dates on Santa Anita's stakes calendar include the Sunshine Millions on January 29, which features bicoastal competition between Florida-breds and California-breds. Santa Anita and its sister property, Gulfstream Park, will each host three Sunshine Millions races.

Santa Anita will run two $300,000 stakes on Sunshine Millions Day, the Sunshine Millions Turf and the Sunshine Millions Distaff. The Sunshine Millions Sprint will offer a purse of $200,000.
The $250,000 Santa Monica H. (G1), for older fillies and mares at seven furlongs, will be run on January 30. The following Saturday, February 5, three-year-old fillies will have an opportunity to run in the Las Virgenes S. (G1).

Santa Anita will present the 74th running of the $750,000 Santa Anita H. (G1) on March 5. The $300,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1) and the $250,000 Santa Anita Oaks (G1) will also be run on Big 'Cap Day.

The $300,000 Santa Margarita S. (G1), which is where the mighty Zenyatta (Street Cry [Ire]) made her 2010 debut, will be run at 1 1/8 miles on March 12.
On April 9, the Santa Anita Derby will highlight a program that includes three other graded events, the Arcadia S. (G2), the Providencia S. (G2) and the Las Cienegas H. (G3).

The meet will finish with Santa Anita's traditional closing day feature, the $150,000 San Juan Capistrano H. (G2) for older horses at about 1 3/4 miles, beginning atop Santa Anita's legendary hillside turf course.

Zenyatta retired, to board at Lane's End Farm
Zenyatta will leave sun-drenched California for the Bluegrass of Kentucky (Benoit Photos)Dual champion ZENYATTA (Street Cry [Ire]) has been retired from racing and will be boarded at Mr. and Mrs. William S. Farish's Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Kentucky. She is expected to arrive in early December, but breeding plans have not yet been finalized.
Zenyatta, campaigned by Jerry and Ann Moss, won 19 of 20 starts with her only loss coming in this year's Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) when she ran second by just a head after coming from far off the pace. She set North American female records in earnings -- $7,304,580 -- and racked up an extraordinary 13 Grade 1 wins. Those Grade 1 wins include the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic and the 2008 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic (G1) as well as the 2008 and 2010 editions of the Apple Blossom (G1).

The Pamplemousse retired to Rancho San Miguel
The Pamplemousse will begin stud duties in 2011 (Benoit Photos)
Dual Grade 3 hero THE PAMPLEMOUSSE (Kafwain) has been retired and will take up stud duties in 2011 at Tom and Nancy Clark's Rancho San Miguel near San Miguel, California. His fee has been set at $3,500.

The gray colt was a major contender on the 2009 Triple Crown trail, breaking his maiden at Hollywood Park in December 2008 before adding consecutive victories in the San Rafael S. (G3) and Sham S. (G3) in the new year. In the latter race, the Julio Canani trainee romped by six lengths, firmly securing his spot on many lists for the Kentucky Derby (G1).

The Pamplemousse was installed as the morning-line favorite for the Santa Anita Derby (G1), but was withdrawn the day of the race after heat was discovered in one of his tendons during a pre-race examination. The following day, it was revealed that a scan had found a small lesion on the colt's left front leg and he was ruled out of the Kentucky Derby.

"The Pamplemousse had more raw ability than any horse I ever trained," Canani said. "Not only was he fast, but he could carry his speed a long way. I really believed he had classic potential. It was a travesty that he never had a chance to prove it."

The now four-year-old colt didn't resurface until August 1, when he worked three furlongs at Del Mar in :36 4/5. Eleven more works followed that one, with the most recent coming on October 24 at Hollywood Park when The Pamplemousse drilled five-eighths in :59 3/5. His return to the races was cut short, however, by news of his retirement

Grade 1 conqueror HOMEBOYKRIS (Roman Ruler), unraced since a 16th-place run in the May 1 Kentucky Derby (G1), continued preparing for his return to competition with a five-furlong breeze in 1:02 3/5 over Aqueduct's fast main track on Thursday 11/18/2010

Jockey Joe Crispin had a huge day at Portland Meadows Nov. 17, winning seven races on the nine-race card to equal his own record for wins on one program. Crispin has won seven races on one day three times at the Oregon racetrack. The last time he accomplished the feat was in 2007. Crispin started out the day with a win aboard odds-on favorite Decatur Island in the opener for leading trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who is based in Northern California but has a string at Portland Meadows. Crispin then won race four aboard Classy Prize, the second choice for trainer Charlie Essex, and race five with Hollendorfer trainee Karakot. Crispin won the sixth race, the $15,000 Dennis Dodge Memorial Stakes for 2-year-olds, with odds-on favorite El Gaucho, also trained by Hollendorfer. He then won the seventh race aboard Tough Gold for trainer Neil Knapp. In the eighth race, the Mt. Hood Handicap, Bijou Barrister rallied from far back to give Crispin his sixth victory of the day. Crispin closed out the card by guiding Trail Beyond to win the ninth event. Crispin is one of four local riders that will square off against four jockeys from Southern California in the XpressBet Jockey Challenge at Portland Meadows Nov. 29.

Ten Looking to Hit Jackpot, Earn Derby Ticket at Delta Downs

By Michael Dempsey | Date 11/19
    Yes, Saturday afternoon. 11/20/2010

Delta Downs usually runs at night, but the richest day of the meeting at the Louisiana track will go up against the big boys like Churchill Downs and Aqueduct on Saturday.

First post for the eleven race card is 1:00 CT, with the Delta Jackpot going off as the seventh race with a post time of 4:15 CT.

The Delta Jackpot has become a key Kentucky Derby prep despite the fact that it is still 5 ½ months until the first Saturday of May.

The winner earns $600,000 in graded earnings, enough to lock in a starting berth in the Derby, while the runner up earns a check that puts him squarely in the bubble.

This year's Jackpot drew a solid field that includes eight stakes winners, and horse shipping in from Canada, Florida, Delaware, New York, and New Jersey.

The Jackpot is the anchor leg of a $100,000 guaranteed Pick 4 that includes the $125,000 Treasure Chest, $125,0000 Delta Mile, and the $500,000 Delta Princess (G3).

    7th Race - Delta Downs - Saturday, November 20th, 2010 STAKES. 1 1/16 Mile Dirt. Purse $1,000,000. Delta Downs Jackpot S. (Grade 3). FOR TWO YEAR OLDS. (04:15 PM) (10)Wager Types: Exacta / Trifecta / Pick 3 (RACES 7-8-9) / Superfecta (10 CENT MIN.) / Quinella

Looks like a field of horses with pretty un-extraordinary resumes running in a million dollar race for a sure entry into the Ky. Derby. Kind of odd, a million dollar purse but only a Grade III?

    Critically-injured rider Martinez returns home

Jockey Michael Martinez was discharged from the Santa Clara Valley Rehabilitation Center in San Jose, California, Friday morning, 68 days after being critically injured in a spill at Golden Gate Fields.

Martinez, paralyzed from the waist down as a result of his fall on September 12, was thrilled to be heading home.

"I am looking forward to spending the holidays at home with my family," said Martinez, who resides in San Pablo with his fiancée Charlotte Garcia and their baby daughter Merari.

Martinez added that he has been overwhelmed by the support he has received since his accident.

"I truly appreciate the prayers and support I've received from the fans, my fellow horsemen and everyone at Golden Gate Fields," Martinez said. "I am very grateful."

Martinez was picked up at Santa Clara Valley Rehabilitation Center by his agent, Dennis Patterson, who has been with his rider constantly since the spill.
"Michael's spirits are great…unbelievably positive," Patterson said.

Golden Gate Fields is continuing to accept contributions to the Michael Martinez Fund. Those wishing to donate should make their checks out to "Michael Martinez Fund" and send them to Golden Gate Fields, 1100 Eastshore Highway, Berkeley, CA 94710.

Gourmet Dinner serves up Delta Jackpot feast
Gourmet Dinner returned to his winning ways with style in the Delta Jackpot (Coady Photography)Our Sugar Bear Stable's GOURMET DINNER (Trippi) suffered the first loss of his career when second in the In Reality division of the Florida Stallion S. series on October 16, but more than made up for that disappointment when capturing Saturday's $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot S. (G3) under regular rider Sebastian Madrid. The bay colt wasn't given much support in the 1 1/16-mile race, sent off the 20-1 seventh choice in the eight-horse field, but rewarded his faithful backers with payouts of $48, $14.60 and $8.60.

Bug Juice (Mingun) was the actual favorite in the Jackpot at nearly 5-2 and proceeded to take command of the race when the gates opened. Setting splits of :22 4/5, :46 2/5 and 1:11 4/5, the gelding was never given a breather while pressed the whole way by Decisive Moment (With Distinction) to his outside. Bug Juice began fading around the turn, leaving the way clear for Decisive Moment to grab the advantage. That runner never got the chance, though, as Gourmet Dinner suddenly appeared on the outside and took the lead.

Gourmet Dinner held fellow longshot Decisive Moment in the stretch run, pulling off for the 2 1/4-length victory while stopping the clock for 1 1/16 miles on the fast dirt in 1:45 1/5.

Decisive Moment was the ninth choice at 48-1 and returned $34.40 and $17.20 while ending the $759.80 exacta. Clubhouse Ride (Candy Ride [Arg]) rallied from the rear for third, 3 3/4 lengths farther back, and paid $9.20 at 13-1. The trifecta was worth $9,738.40 and the 1-7-5-9 superfecta, with 3-1 second choice Sweet Ducky (Pulpit) rounding out the top four, totaled a lucrative $28,902. Classic Legacy (Macho Uno), Bug Juice and Rush Now (Tiznow) followed the top four under the wire.

Gourmet Dinner outran his Jackpot rivals, including the riderless Aces N Kings (Coady Photography)Aces N Kings (Jet Phone) lost jockey Calvin Borel when suddenly bolting to the outside in the middle of the far turn and carried Dreamsrunwild (Offlee Wild) to the fence. Dreamsrunwild took up sharply to avoid going over the fence, causing rider Iram Diego to lose his irons, and the dark bay was officially listed as crossing under the wire 55 1/2 lengths behind Rush Now. Blue Laser (Bluegrass Cat), also carried out, was pulled up by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan and walked off the track.

Gourmet Dinner began his career with trainer Peter Gulyas and broke his maiden at first asking on July 17 at Calder. He immediately stepped up to face stakes company when sent in the Florida Stallion S. series, rallying to take both the Dr. Fager and Affirmed divisions. Not long after the latter race, he found himself in the barn of Steve Standridge, who saddled the juvenile when he was going for a sweep of the series in the In Reality last out. Alas, Gourmet Dinner took the lead in the stretch of that event only to find himself run down by 46-1 longshot Reprized Halo (Halo's Image). Seeking a return to the winner's circle here, the colt continued working at Calder before shipping into Delta Downs and scoring a first win under his new trainer. The $600,000 winner's share rocketed his earnings to $809,660 and his career line now reads 5-4-1-0.

Due to an insufficient number of entries, the live racing card scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Golden Gate Fields has been canceled, the track announced. Golden Gate, in Albany, Calif., will be open that day for simulcast wagering. The track would have been running that day without the support of a live card at Hollywood Park in Southern California. Hollywood is on a four-day race week schedule during its autumn/winter meet. Clubhouse gates at Golden Gate open at 10 a.m. PST for simulcasting from Churchill Downs, Aqueduct, Laurel, Hawthorne, Portland Meadows, Penn National, and Woodbine. Golden Gate Fields will host a special Thanksgiving Day racing program Nov. 25. The holiday program will begin early with a first post time of 11:15 a.m.

Jockey Calvin Borel has a broken jaw and will miss the remainder of the Churchill Downs meet, his agent Jerry Hissam said Nov. 21. Borel, 44, was thrown from his mount in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot (gr. III) Nov. 20 when the colt, Aces N Kings, failed to negotiate the final turn and bolted. '“His jaw is broken, and he’ll be out the rest of the meet; hopefully we’ll start back in Arkansas (at Oaklawn Park),” Hissam said. “The trailing horse (Blue Laser) that Shaun (Bridgmohan) was on kicked him.” Borel returned to Louisville a little after 10 p.m. and was scheduled for surgery on the morning of Nov. 21 to repair a clean break on the right side of his jaw and multiple fractures on the left. The jockey's wife, Lisa Borel, said doctors would insert pins and screws to help the injury heal. According to the agent, Aces N Kings’ stifle locked in the race. Hissam said he hadn’t yet had a chance to talk with trainer Henry Johnson Jr. about the colt’s condition. “His rear end kind of went out from under him, and that’s what caused him to bolt and drop Calvin,” he said. Borel also had a large laceration across his chin. He flew back from Louisiana on a private plane immediately following the accident and was hospitalized overnight in Louisville.
