Anyone here go to Canterbury Park?

Never see this track on TV. I know TVG doesn't cover them. Does HRTV?

no, no one does except for that phony claiming crown thing they run. tvg sends hometown pretty boy matt carothers to cover it and it's all shippers and no one can pick the winners that day and there is minimal interest in it...the mosquitos are like bats there in the summertime which is only about 2 monthes long...

I used to go to Canterbury a lot, and I have made a lot of friends there that go every Friday, Saturday, and most Sundays. I took a big win and decided to walk away after about 20 years. I will be going on Father's day with the kids to watch the weiner dog races and bet a little bit, hang out with whoever shows up, etc... but I'm done.

Unusialsusp5: The claiming crown is pretty easy actually, don't pick the horses from Canterbury or Hawthorne, they ALWAYS ship horses from Churchill and those horses ALWAYS win... it's pretty simple actually. Matt's a nice guy, after the show 2 or 3 years ago, he came upstairs and hung out for awhile, I'll give you that he's got a huge ego and really isn't that great at picking horses but at least he's rarely picking the easy favorite like everyone else. The rest of your sentance might be right.

wasn't aware of the churchill downs domination factor. will have to look into that except the quality of racing at churchill downs has severely declined due to no slots, so the shippers may not be of the ususal quality...matts ok but notice he only picks 7-2 - 5-1 shots which isn't necessarily a bad way to go (if you bet horses you must throw out the favorite and try to win the money people will lose betting on chalk). that claiming crown day shouldn't be on a saturday because it doesn't get the exposure due to other venues with better racing...

Racing in MN is in a sad state if wiener dog and ostrich races are the highlights of the season..Only if the racino bill would ever pass, it would help out..And Canterbury wont even be hosting the claiming crown this year as its moving down to the Fairgrounds

That's sad, we just opened our track back up after 2 years of dark live racing.

No one seems to enjoy going to the races like they used to. It's weird.

Hard to survive without the product being on the air somewhere.

In Minnesota you have the Indian's controlling the gambling... and lobbying against the Racino. I was fine with it when they got Mystic Lake and Little Six built because they were living is shacks on rutty dirt roads and were very, very poor. Now that they have nice houses, new cars, never have to work another day in their lives, it's just about greed... sad. They even bought one of my favorite golf courses to close it down so it wouldn't compete against The Wilds.

On the other hand they have a point too... I really wouldn't want to see MN turned into a mini-Las Vegas either... and honestly when I went/go to Canterbury I don't really bet on the Canterbury races, the payouts/pools are way too low. I'd be fine with Canterbury and Running Aces getting slot machines (I never play them.) I wouldn't want to see it expand beyond those locations though and you know the Mall of America and the old Block E location both want casinos. Open the Canterbury door and you have to (probably) open the door for the other locations.

They made a good run at trying to get more fans in last year, this year it seems they might have given up.

I dont remember Canterbury ever being on the air on any channel back in the mid 90s/early 00s, but the place was always packed on weekends, now its pretty empty compared to then..That would be a brutal blow to both the state, track, and horse racing here if that ends up happening Jake. Nobody will want to come after that. Very sad!
