    March 2011 Horse Racing News

    Tuesday March 1, 2011

The state of New Jersey is moving ahead with a plan to seek a private operator for Monmouth Park in Oceanport.

Gov. Chris Christie said Feb. 25 that the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority will issue a request for proposals for a private operator next week. Officials hope to have a new entity in place by June 1 to oversee the track's traditional summer racing meet. Dates for that meet have not yet been determined.

The state recently worked out a deal to lease the Meadowlands to a Standardbred owners and breeders group to operate harness racing there.

Christie also signed legislation Feb. 25 to expedite development of off-track wagering facilities in the state. A law permitting them was enacted 10 years ago, but only three are operating.

There is only this month left to cash in any horse racing winning tickets... be it purchased at the track or at an Off Track Betting establishment.

If any 2010 winning ticket is not presented for payment, come April 1st 2011, the valve of the winning ticket gets turned over to New York State.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
(I am located in New York State, and do not know about the rule on other States. But most likely that procedure happens when State Budget is to be in place.)

Just read Baffert is starting 4 horses in the Big Cap this Saturday at Santa Anita,First Dude,Game On Dude,Tweebster, and Spurrier. He said its gives him the best chance to beat the favorite Twirling Candy.I really want to see how FIRST DUDE runs in his 1st start for Baffert although he will likely be a short price which is hard to take the way this horse hangs.

Jockey Samyn loses two fingers in accident

    Posted: Wednesday, March 02, 2011 11:40 AM

Veteran jockey Jean-Luc Samyn, a fixture on the New York Racing Association circuit, will miss about a month accidentally cutting off two fingers in a snowblower accident on February 21.

Samyn, 54, lost two-thirds of his right index and middle fingers when he tried to unclog a snowblower. He also fractured his right ring finger.

“You have to look on the bright side,” Samyn said. “I am fortunate that this didn’t end up being worse.”

Originally from Bailleul, France, Samyn has won more than 2,600 races during his career, including 163 graded stakes.

“This is actually good for my career, because now I’m lighter,” Samyn joked. “If trainers want a light jockey, they can ride me.”

Da Silva escapes serious injury in Aqueduct spill

X-rays were negative on jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva after a spill in the 9TH race Wednesday ( 3/2/2011) at Aqueduct Racetrack, according to the NYRA Jockey Advocate.

Da Silva, 35, was taken to Jamaica Hospital after being unseated when his mount in the race, Honeywantshermoney, fell after the finish line, and was released after the X-rays came back negative.

Honeywantshermoney, a three-year-old filly trained by Rodrigo Ubillo, suffered fatal cardiovascular collapse.

According to Kevin Meyocks, da Silva's agent, he is day-to-day and hopes to ride Thursday at Aqueduct. The Brazilian native has won eight races from 68 starts in 2011. He has won 673 races over the course of his riding career in North America, which started in 2004.

NJ Governor vetoes online gaming bill

    March 03, 2011
As New Jersey racing industry leaders expected, on Thursday afternoon New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a measure that would have made New Jersey the first state in the country to legalize online gambling. Acccording to nj.com, the governor said he had "legal and constitutional" concerns with the bill at a press conference on Thursday morning, and cited "significant concerns" about the bill in his veto message.

Christie wrote he is concerned that the bill would allow commercial gambling outside of Atlantic City. Christie also opposed a provision in the measure to use some funds generated from online gambling to help horse racing.

"The people of New Jersey previously rejected the notion of statewide casino gambling," Christie wrote. "Legalized gambling was limited to the borders of Atlantic City to improve the economy of the region by bolstering the tourism industry."

NO RACING at AQUEDUCT, nor any betting...... as a result of construction, a 600 pair wire running from Rockaway Blvd into AQUEDUCT was accidentally severed, resultiing in the loss of ALL tote communication.

IMO...... on Saturday 3/5/2011 in the SANTA ANITA H. (G1),Race 10 at Santa Anita, $750,000, 4&up,at a distance of 1 1/4m. Twirling Candy was a comepletely used up animal and created the problem at the top of the stretch. Twirling Candy is either going to have to be put on the "bench for a few months" or learn to become a Sprinter. It is apparent Twirling Candy does not have it to continue to race in route events.

After bumping repeatedly in the stretch, GAME ON DUDE (Awesome Again) re-rallied late to nip Setsuko (Pleasantly Perfect) by a nose on the wire in Saturday's $750,000 Santa Anita H. (G1) and then had to survive a lengthy steward's inquiry to garner a controversial victory. Jockey Chantal Sutherland had the mount on the four-year-old, who netted his first Grade 1 score and provided trainer Bob Baffert with his second consecutive win, and third overall, in the prestigious 1 1/4-mile event.

Game on Dude raced close to the pace from the start and advanced to a narrow lead leaving the far turn, but the race was far from over as the dark bay gelding entered the stretch as part of a three-horse pack with 1-2 favorite Twirling Candy (Candy Ride [Arg]) in the middle and Setsuko on the far outside. Sutherland was hitting Game on Dude left-handed and her mount's back right hip made contact with the front left shoulder of Twirling Candy, starting a chain reaction in which Twirling Candy slammed into Setsuko and then back again into Game on Dude, who was nearly knocked off stride twice.

The stewards deliberated whether Game on Dude instigated the incident, but ultimately determined that Twirling Candy was responsible for the bumping.

Twirling Candy, who was cut off by the front-running First Dude (Stephen Got Even) shortly after the break, was rank early, fighting the urges of jockey Joel Rosario to relax as he entered the first turn, but loomed a serious factor turning for home. However, he threw in the towel after the severe bumping incident and faded to fifth. His off-the-board performance generated huge show payoffs.

Setsuko exits controversial Big 'Cap loss with injury

Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella reported that injury has been added to what he considers insult, as Santa Anita H. (G1) runner-up SETSUKO (Pleasantly Perfect) has sustained an injured left front leg, which resulted from contact with favored Twirling Candy (Candy Ride [Arg]) during the controversial stretch run of Saturday's main event.

"He came out of the race with a cut on his left front leg," Mandella said. "He's got a lot of swelling in the leg and we're treating it, hoping that it isn't going to become more serious. There's no question he got cut by Twirling Candy."

Setsuko, Twirling Candy and the winner, GAME ON DUDE (Awesome Again), were involved in repeated contact approaching the eighth-pole, resulting in a 12-minute inquiry, after which it was announced that the stewards had made no change to the original order of finish.

The four-year-old Setsuko was seeking his first stakes win, and only his second career victory, in the race but barely missed by a nose on the wire. He's now run second in the Big 'Cap, Santa Anita Derby (G1) and Sham S. (G3) during his career, which stands at 12-1-5-2, $396,686

Pletcher eager for Mo to kick off campaign in Timely Writer

Todd Pletcher understands that expectations for Uncle Mo far exceed an anticipated victory in Saturday's $100,000 Timely Writer at Gulfstream Park. With 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta retired and confirmed in foal to Bernardini, his undefeated three-year-old colt is widely viewed as Thoroughbred racing's Next Big Thing -- a rare specimen with the talent and charisma to capture the imagination of the American public.

Uncle Mo has been rated as the 3-5 morning-line favorite in a field of six entered in the one-mile stakes written especially to attract the Eclipse Award-winning colt to Gulfstream Park for his three-year-old debut.

"We're happy the Timely Writer filled and we're able to run Uncle Mo at Gulfstream," said Pletcher, who has been training Uncle Mo at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream's satellite training facility.

"Palm Meadows is a similar surface and we feel like it's a good place to start a season. The horse has been training well. Everything's gone according to plan. We've had cooperative weather. We've been able to breeze whenever we wanted to breeze, and he's been training as well as he ever has."

Uncle Mo will likely be an even shorter price than his morning-line odds at post time due to his superior racing record, which includes a maiden victory at Saratoga by more than 14 lengths last August, a victory in the Champagne S. (G1) at Belmont Park in October and a stunningly dominant 4 1/4-length score in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs in November.

During a meeting with the California Horse Racing Board March 14, Hollywood Park made it clear that it wants to remain a part of the racing calendar at least through 2012. The 238-acre track site is under threat of a large-scale commercial and residential build-out already approved by the city of Inglewood. Track president Jack Liebau previously stated Hollywood's intention to operate through the end of next year as it awaits a turnaround in the economy that would it allow it to proceed with plans to bulldoze the facility. But because of property owner Hollywood Park Land Company's refusal to provide the California racing industry anything more than a six-month notice once it decides to shutter the track, its place on the state racing calendar is anything but assured beyond 2011.

First there was Bill O'Reilly and The Factor and now there is The Village People and Mucho Macho Man.

If you've ever been to a wedding you've probably danced to a song by The Village People, mainly YMCA or Macho Man. The lyrics still ring out: “Macho Macho Man, I wanna be a macho man.” Well, the Village People have finally discovered their namesake, Mucho Macho Man, and make reference to the Risen Star (gr. II) winner on their website: What do Village People and the Kentucky Derby have in common? Well, one of the horses competing is named Mucho Macho Man and this horse has the only female trainer at the Derby!:

While the Village People don't predict races, we wish Mucho Macho Man the best at the Derby and we'll be watching.”

It was Mucho Macho Man’s co-owner Patti Reeves who brought their colt to the Village People’s attention. “Funny thing, but when I first contacted the Village People they hadn't heard of us,” Reeves said. “Now they are contacting me wanting to know if they can come to the Derby with us. I have to check out what they look like these days. They are definitely supporting us and are in for the publicity.”

Reeves and her husband, Dean, who race as Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, purchased majority interest in Mucho Macho Man from Dream Team Stable following the colt’s first start, in which he finished second to Gourmet Dinner.

The son of Macho Uno – Ponche de Leona, by Ponche, also finished second to To Honor and Serve in the Remsen Stakes (gr. II) and Nashua Stakes (gr. II) last year. He is scheduled to make his next start in the March 26 Louisiana Derby (gr. II).

After sitting on the sideline for nearly a month, jockey Paco Lopez couldn’t wait to get back to the Gulfstream Park winner’s circle March 16. He didn’t have to. The 24-year-old jockey, leading the Gulfstream standings when he was injured Feb. 18, won aboard his very first mount, guiding Smart Sting to a fast-closing 1 1/2-length victory in the featured eighth race.

“I’m happy, really happy. I’m hungry, going three weeks without riding,” said Lopez, who finished third on Dreaming of Rose in the ninth race. “I’m not tired. I’m hungry.”

Lopez seemed unstoppable in his drive to defend his Gulfstream Park riding title before he was involved in a a spill. Atop the jockeys’ standings by 13 victories at the time, Lopez was sidelined with a left elbow injury. The 24-year-old rising star returned to action tied for third in the standings with Rajiv Maragh, nine wins behind Javier Castellano and six in back of John Velazquez. While he still is very much alive in the jockeys’ race, the modest Lopez is just happy to be back riding.

Youth Camp set for mid-July at Vernon Downs

The Harness Horse Youth Foundation summer camp to be held at Vernon Downs will take place from July 12–16, 2011. The camp is open to young people between the ages of 12 and 14 as of January 1, 2011; no previous horse experience is necessary. Participants and staff will stay at the Vernon Downs Hotel and meals will be provided by Vernon Downs as well. The cost for the entire event, including all food and lodging, is $150.

Earthquake damage has forced the cancellation of April race dates at Nakayama and Fukushima racecourses, affecting the first leg of the Japanese Triple Crown—the Satsuki-sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas, Jpn-I), according to the Japan Racing Association.

The first Japanese classic, originally scheduled for April 17 at Nakayama, will instead be run April 24 at Tokyo Racecourse.

Also the meeting at Kokura on the south Japan island of Kyushu, will be extended through April 10. Nobunori Furuta, administrative manager of the JRA office in New York, said the the severe situation in Japan brought on by a major earthquake and tsunami might force further changes.

    Friday March 25, 2011

Louisiana native jockey Robby Albarado, the only rider in Fair Grounds history to have captured seven riding titles at the nation’s third-oldest race course, will return to the saddle Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the final three programs of the 2010-2011 New Orleans Thoroughbred racing season.

The 37-year-old native of Lafayette, La., has been out of action since sustaining a broken heel in a freak pre-race accident aboard a horse here Jan. 2, but is coming back in time to accept mounts in Saturday’s showcased $1 million Louisiana Derby, $400,000 New Orleans Handicap and $400,000 Mervin Muniz Handicap, and is listed in four of the five stakes races restricted to Louisiana-breds slated for Friday’s Battle On the Bayou program. He started galloping horses again last Saturday.

“It only took me a couple of days to start feeling right at home on the back of a horse,” Albarado said Wednesday morning after finishing up his morning routine astride a horse for Al Stall Jr. “Mostly, I’ve been working on my balance and my timing. I never really got out of shape because all the time off I kept going to the gym. I did have to have surgery on my heel where they put in a plate and 11 screws, so I spent most of February at home with my family in Louisville. But I came back to New Orleans in March and have been going to therapy at Tulane where they have an excellent sports medicine department. A lot of athletes go there, because they’re specialists at getting you well in hurry. What I have to do is keep all the tendons there flexible.

“I’ve been lucky in that I’ve been able to obtain some live mounts for Louisiana Derby Day,” said Albarado. “That wasn’t easy, because nobody knew for sure when I’d be able to return. I have the mount on the favorite (Mike House’s Battle of Hastings) in the Mervin Muniz. I’ve never ridden him before but I know he’s a good horse and I’ve ridden a lot of good horses for (trainer) Greg Fox over the years.

“I ride (James Spence’s) El Caballo in the New Orleans Handicap,” said Albarado. “He hasn’t run in a year but I rode the horse last year and I’ve been getting on him in the mornings this week and he’s been feeling really strong. I think he’s going to run a big race.

“I also ride a horse named Le Mans (owned by Padua Stables) for Steve Asmussen in the Louisiana Derby,” said Albarado. “He’s a maiden but I guess he’s been running in some tough maiden races out in California and I know that Steve thinks a lot of him.”

Albarado’s stakes mounts – all in $75,000 races – in his first day back Friday are aboard Merrill Scherer et al.’s 5-2 favorite Tensas Punch in the Crescent City Oaks, Tony Richey et al.’s Ollie Baby at 5-1 in the Crescent City Derby and Red Oak Stable’s Kissimmee Kyle, 5-1 in the Crescent City Derby but also cross-entered in the Costa Rising Stakes at 5-1.

Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) will be reducing the takeout on its triactor wager by 2 percent for the upcoming live Thoroughbred meet, which kicks off this Saturday. The "tri," a bet in which fans are asked to pick the top three finishers in a race, is one of the more popular wagers at the track. It will now feature a takeout, which is the amount of money kept by the track before the winning bettors are paid off, of 25 percent. The takeout reduction is the second in less than two years. The rate was at 28.3 percent, before a cut in 2009 dropped the mark to 27 percent. The 25 percent takeout includes 5.3 percent in provincial and federal taxes and levies. "We understand how important takeout is to the horseplayer," said Sean Pinsonneault, WEG's executive vice-president and chief operating officer. "We believe this additional reduction in the triactor takeout on our live Thoroughbred racing will bring even greater value to our customers and allow us to be even more competitive in the betting marketplace." Woodbine offers a Win-Place-Show takeout of 16.95 percent, and boasts some of the fullest and most competitive fields in the sport.

glad to hear woodbine is reducing the takeout.it will surely increase the tri pools, meaning better returns for us players.the next thing to work on would be to allow u.s. betting sites the $.20 wager on the superfectas.we currently have to wager $1.00 minimum for the superfecta.maybe someday.
