According to Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos, it appears that a deal is close but not yet done. If he signs in LA, the Kings will definitely be a powerhouse this year.
So sick of hearing about this guy....imo he's a good fit with LA but in NO WAY makes them a "powerhouse." he will help them get into the playoffs and get a higher seeding, but I still wanna see some production in the Playoffs.
I think that if LA was going to sign him it'd be a done deal by now... They've already put their best offer on the table two times and been shot down. Kovalchuk is probably trying to negotiate the biggest contract in hockey history with teams in the KHL.
better for the Kings to not overspend there imo, it would be the exact opposite of what they've been doing the last few years, the youth movement will pay of in the end, Doughty & JJ > Kovy.
now for my thoughts as a New York Ranger fan...**** you Kovy..I hope we smash your ass !!!
there is alot made of the term being 17 year contract but nhlnumbers has the first 11 years of the contract paying 98.5 million, so the last 6 years only pay 3.5 million total. all to do with having an annual cap hit of 6 million instead of approx 9 if he had the 11 year 98.5 deal.
Contracts like this one should be rejected - Just looking at the way it is structured, it is obvious that neither side intends for him to play it out for 17 years.
