Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Nashville Predators // Jan 26

    Between the benches

Unfamiliar foes clash tonight when the Columbus Blue Jackets venture to Nashville to square dance with the Predators. The Blue Jackets have easily been the biggest surprise of the NHL season, posting a 32-11-4 record in the Eastern Conference. The Predators are right where everyone expected them to be in the West at 23-17-8.

    Brothers in arms

The Blue Jackets have been a statistical beast this season. They are 14-6-3 this year on the road and have been strong at both ends of the ice. They have a goal differential of +47 that is only second in the entire league to the Washington Capitals (+51). However, a lot of that came during their 16-game winning streak. Since then they are 5-6 and are coming off an ugly loss on Tuesday to the New York Islanders. Preds be warned: an angry John Tortorella should not be taken lightly.

Sergei Bobrovsky tends to have great stats regardless of who he faces. But against the Preds he is 7-3 in his career and 3-1 when playing in Nashville. After getting pulled agains the Islanders early Tuesday, expect Bobrovsky to be in the zone tonight.

    On the prowl

The Preds have been holding their own amongst a tough Western Conference and even stiffer Central Division. The Preds are in third in the division but have to look off into the distance to find the superior Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild. At home this season, the Preds are 12-5-6 and have won six out of their last eight games in general. Scoring hasn’t been a problem for the Preds as of late. Although they are middle of the pack in goals per game (12th with 2.8), they have scored three goals or more in their last four games.

Coming off a 5-4 OT loss on Tuesday night against the Buffalo Sabres where they lost a 4-2 lead late in the the 3rd, the Preds are facing the right team to get them over an ugly lead-blowing loss. The Preds are 54-19-6 all-time against the Blue Jackets and in their last 25 meetings they are 15-8-2. When at home, their win-loss ratio is even more impressive with a record of 32-5-8 all-time against the Jackets.

    The Final Breakdown

Take the home team in this affair. History dooms the Blue Jackets when they head to Nashville. And we all know that history tends to repeat itself.
