    Russian airliner in fatal crash near Yaroslavl


    An airliner carrying a major league ice hockey team has crashed in Russia killing 36 people.

    Reports said the plane burst into flames near an airport at the city of Yaroslavl, about 200km (140 miles) north of Moscow.

    Members of the local ice hockey team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl were on board the plane.

    Emergency officials said one person survived the crash, the cause of which has not been confirmed.

    Reports said the plane was a Yak-42, a mid-sized jet with a capacity of more than 100 passengers.

    The hockey team was heading to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, where it was due to play against Dinamo Minsk in the opening game of the season of the Continental Hockey League.

    Stunned as **** here. Was one of the top teams in Russian hockey for years. Among players who might have been on a plane are known names like Pavol Demitra, Josef Vasicek, Karlis Strastins, Karel Rachunek... Absolutely brutal news...

    Just read that, canīt believe it, tragic and devastating All my prayers go to their families and friends. But I canīt say it came totally unexpected. Russian airplains are notorious for poor maintenance and technical defects, there were many rumors about drunken pilots... And teams in KHL have to fly a lot, crossing huge distances. RIP Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, one of my favourite teams in KHL.

    Yeah, one week delay, the new start is supposed to take place on the 13th. Not a lucky number again Many teams are offering their players, so Yaroslavl will most probably continue in KHL.
