I'm making a point. I see a lot of cappers on this forum spending every single day, hours upon hours discussing lines. At the end of the day they are fighting hard to break even or make a small profit. A small profit that someone making minimum wage would beat.

I know a lot of peopel gamble as a hobby, and for the action, but how many are seriously trying to use sports betting as a way of making real money?

You can make 60% win rate or better. But for example, if you spend 200k winning 20k profit at the end of a couple years, the guys flipping the burgers already made more money.

Bookmakers gamble on every single game on the board the only difference between them and you is that they are getting better odds.

And no books do not get 50/50 action on anywhere near as many games as you may think.

Out of each day I dedicate maybe three hours to gambling whether it be lines, placing bets, capping, or watching for 2H's. As long as having some guys over or going to a bar and watching some games doesn't count then it's only 3 hours.

I could get $8/hr anywhere nowadays. $8x3=$24x7 is $168.

What am I going to do with $168 a week? I spend that in three days.

If you have fun doing it or are making money doing it, then it is fine. Who cares what the money earned from getting a job at a fast food restaurant would be vs. the time you spend betting on sports. What other thing do you do that others may find to be a "waste of time"? Should you judge your other free time activities (whether they be playing Farmville, exercising, learning new things, etc.) by using a minimum wage metric? No. If you disagree, then you better quit having sex and devote that time to flipping burgers.

I know doing the math pregame also counts as handicapping, but I'm referring to cutting out the "angles" like "bounceback", revenge angle, etc. The less of these hard-to-quantify factors, coupled with more reliable things like forecasting totals based on recent scoring streak and opponent defense, for example, will be more profitable in the long run.

If this argument is directed at recreational gamblers with a sufficient bankroll to be considered a legit gambler and a few years of experience, then you have to factor in that a lot of the time spent handicapping is actually done while at work for many of us, while getting paid at a rate that is most likely much higher than minimum wage, thereby leading to the disposable income available for betting in the first place.

If you're talking to the professionals that earn the majority of their income from sports betting (enough to live off of), then the argument is even less valid as they are people successfully pulled themselves up into the 99th percentile of bettors and have to be considered successes as they are no longer dependent on working for someone else.

If you're talking to the small time gambler with a bankroll of a few hundred dollars that does it primarily for fun, then this argument is completely invalid as its about entertainment, and/or dipping their toe into the industry while learning how it works.

If none of these categories really apply to a bettor, then I'd say you're correct about the person being better off working than spending their time on gambling.

I have thought about this before. The difference is that I go to work because I have to. I bet on sports because I want to. Each way adds some extra money into my bank acct. The thing about it is, I make money doing what I would do anyway, on my free time.
