How much does it take to move a line?

Say your a big better...how much would it take?
Say you have a bunch of small betters, would it take the same amount?

at matchbook, i moved the line with a 1 dollar bet.

5dimes, you can move it easy with 100 dollar bet on small events...it is all relative to the game limit.

on a 10k limit mlb ML side bet, 3k might move it by 1-2 cents.
limit bet usually means 7-10 cents movement...sometimes more.

It's not a very good question. Every book is different and often depends who you are. Some places one $2000 bet is not treated the same as 100 $20 bets; others it is.

Back when Pinny was in the US and they had college hoops overnights, it took very little to move those lines a lot, especially totals. I remember bets of $200 or so moving the money line on a total from -105 to -114. There were times it even took much less than $200, I don't remember specifically, it changed all the time.

I think it`s more a case of who you are,not how much your betting.

    you think 100% wrong

its the amount of money you bet and how much that book takes before movng the line. Small books move the line at smaller betting amounts than larger ones.

    thats it

I don't know anything about the inner workings of sportsbooks, but I would think they move the line for 2 reasons:

    1) To make the line more accurate.
    2) To manage risk.

If a known losing player makes a big bet, they would not move the line to make it more accurate. Depending on how unbalanced their action is, however, they may move the line to manage risk.

I'm not debating you here over your life.

However, as rickysteve said, every book and sport is different so it's a difficult question to answer.

Nevertheless, the sharper books know who their sharp customers are, and they move the lines on their opinions accordingly.

well if that sharp bets $1 they dont

Why would they let a sharp gamble then smart guy???? They'll just lose. Moreover, the sharp could just setup a dummy account or have someone else place his bets.

THATS WHY THE MONEY IS THE KEY TO MOVING THE LINE.

I have an account at a highly rated sportsbook which is set at 20% of the standard limit. If I make a single limit bet on anything, the line moves the full margin. The exact same line will not change one penny even after multiple 100% limit wagers from non-profiled accounts.

A certain (B or higher) book will move any major market I bet at least 5c, sometimes more, even on a WA price, and I'm betting on half limits there (how I sitll have 50% limits I have no idea). When I bet into a WA line on full limits, before I had bashed their brains in, I usually didn't move the line at all.

The question is not a great question and everyone has differing opinions on line movemnet. Today is so much different they 5/10 even 20 years back.

The market size is the big thing. FOr example its easy to move a line at many of these offshore books.... Not a baseball game but an exotic wager...something they don't get a ton or really no action on at all. I moved a line the other day with a 100 dollar bet. it was -200 I bet 100 dollars and the line went to -300. The point is I could never do that with a baseball game or basketball game.

The software dictates how this is handled. Sharp opinions have to be flagged for real events and there opinions move the line.

In Vegas and the like it has more to do with who you were but now nobody goes to the window, times have changed and I would have to believe that the system is tweeked every single day.

Majority of books, profitable ones anyways, move on action, with the goal of balancing the book. Regardless of who is placing the action.

If a book is taking opinions on events, then they have to be laying off somewhere, would'nt survive otherwise.
