NFL Player News - Week of 2/10/20

NFL | Darrynton Evans brings versatility

Appalachian State RB Darrynton Evans said he brings a blend of power speed and wants to continue to return kicks and punts in the NFL. 'I would say that I'm an explosive guy,' Evans said. 'I'm a patient runner but I'm also quick.'

NFL | Lucky Jackson putting in the work
Western Kentucky WR Lucky Jackson credits the work he put in off the field for his success in 2019. 'I think that my football I.Q. is the strongest part of my game,' Jackson said. :Spending that extra time in the classroom slowed the game down for me. Everything just became so much easier.'

Steelers | Bryan McLendon hired as WR coach
The Pittsburgh Steelers hired South Carolina wide receivers coach Bryan McLendon for the same position within their organization. He coached the receivers from 2015-17 before being named offensive coordinator for 2018. He was demoted back to receivers coach for the 2019 season.

Giants | Golden Tate expected to be part of plan
New York Giants WR Golden Tate is likely stick around heading into the 2020 season, as cutting him would result in $7.1 million of dead money. Beat writer Jordan Raanan says the team was happy with his production after he returned from a four-game suspension, and cutting him seems unlikely since his versatility fits what new head coach Joe Judge is hoping to accomplish in his first season at the helm.
Footballguys view: Tate could be a big part of what the Giants do on offense. His reliability as a pass-catcher and run-after-the-catch ability makes him a fine target for young quarterback Daniel Jones.

Giants | Rhett Ellison could be on the move
New York Giants TE Rhett Ellison has a $7.2 million cap number for the 2020 season, 12th among NFL tight ends. Beat writer Jordan Raanan projects Ellison, who is a solid blocker, as either an option to negotiate a pay cut or end up a cap casualty.
Footballguys view: We'll see if Ellison would be open to a pay cut or if he wants to hit the open market. He is a reserve player behind Evan Engram and isn't asked to do that much on offense outside of block.

Redskins | No future for Jordan Reed in Washington?
Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (concussion) has yet to make a final decision on playing in 2020, but he will likely be cut to save $8.5 million even if he does decide to continue his career, according to John Keim of ESPN.com.
Footballguys view: Reed just can't stay healthy. We all know that he has talent and is a dangerous starting tight end, but Reed has been bitten by multiple injury bugs over the course of his career. Washington may just decide it's time to move on from the talented but oft-injured veteran.

    Jordan Reed player page

Redskins | Paul Richardson's time up in Washington?
Washington Redskins WR Paul Richardson is 'likely' to be cut in favor of a proven veteran, according to a source familiar with head coach Ron Rivera's plans.
Footballguys view: Richardson has talent...and plenty of speed...but he's only been able to play a full 16-game season once in his six years in the NFL. He's been with Washington for two seasons and has only played 17 games combined. Richardson is under contract through the 2022 season. He has a cap hit of $8.3 million in 2020 and there is $6 million remaining in dead money.

    Tuesday Update

Chargers | Philip Rivers likely done after 2021
Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers told Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times on Monday, Feb. 10, that he can say for certain that if he is still playing, 'it's a two-year maximum.' Rivers and the Chargers mutually agreed earlier Monday to let the quarterback hit free agency after 16 seasons.

NFL | Scott Linehan headed to LSU Mon Feb 10, 06:09 PM
Former Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan is reportedly set to become the new passing game coordinator at LSU, according to multiple sources.

Saints | Taysom Hill open to leaving New Orleans
Impending free-agent QB Taysom Hill told 97.5 The Fanatic's Rob Maaddi during Super Bowl week that he views himself as a franchise quarterback and is open to leaving the New Orleans Saints if they don't share that view. However, he also emphasized he 'loves' playing with QB Drew Brees and hopes to continue doing so.

NFL | Good news for Tua Tagovailoa
University of Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) recently underwent a three-month CT scan on his injured hip, and it was as 'positive as possible,' according to sources. While it will likely be at least another month before he's cleared for football activities, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that his hip fracture has healed and the range of motion is 'good.'

    Thursday Update

Lions | Kenny Golladay happy in Detroit
Detroit Lions WR Kenny Golladay is reportedly not concerned that a contract extension will get done at some point as he enters the fourth and final year of his rookie deal.'I wouldn't mind being in Detroit for a while. Everything should work itself out. I'm enjoying myself,' Golladay told USA TODAY's Doug Farrar.

Browns | Cleveland willing to part with David Njoku?
Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku 'fell out of favor' under the previous regime and is clearly losing the trust of QB Baker Mayfield, in the opinion of ESPN's Jake Trotter, who believes it possible the Browns will consider moving him if they can 'get something that can help them in return.'

Eagles | Philly could target Demarcus Robinson
Impending free-agent Demarcus Robinson (Chiefs) is expected to be of interest to the Philadelphia Eagles if he is allowed to hit the open market next month, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Buccaneers | Jameis Winston has Lasik surgery
Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston (eyes) recently underwent Lasik surgery to help improve his eyesight.
Footballguys view: Let the jokes begin about Winston being able to see the defense in 2020. Winston is set to be a free agent and there's no guarantee that the Bucs are going to have him back...especially with Philip Rivers available. We'll see if Winston sticks with the Bucs or goes somewhere else for the 2020 season...and we'll see if this surgery helps him throw fewer interceptions.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman may not return
Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman may be a candidate to be released this offseason, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Footballguys view: Freeman has a cap hit of $9.5 million in 2020 and there is $6 million remaining in dead money. We'll see if the Falcons want to take that cap hit and go ahead and let Freeman explore other options. His contract runs through the 2022 season.
    Link to story

Bengals | CIN to work on Andy Dalton trade
Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton has been told by the Bengals that they will work to trade him.
Footballguys view: The Bengals are moving on from Dalton in 2020, likely with a quarterback (Joe Burrow?) with the No.1 overall pick in the draft. Dalton shouldn't command much from a team in need of a bridge quarterback. It will be interesting to see what the Bengals get in return.
    Link to story
    Andy Dalton player page

NFL | Laviska Shenault won't need surgery
University of Colorado WR Laviska Shenault (groin) won't require surgery on his nagging groin injury, and he hopes to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine.
Footballguys view: Shenault is a first-round talent and capable of making plays as a receiver or runner. However, he's got a long injury history and has a playing style where he does not shy away from contact. His medical checks at the Scouting Combine will help determine whether or not he goes in the first round or the second round of the 2020 NFL draft.
    Link to story

Patriots | Tom Brady talks should heat up soon
New England Patriots impending free-agent QB Tom Brady is expected to have serious contract discussions with the team before the March 18 new league year. Brady hasn't had talks with the team yet, but he would cost them a $13.5 million salary cap charge if he's not on the roster by then. The Patriots project to have about $29 million in cap space, per sources.
Footballguys view: If Brady's contract is extended before the 2020 league year begins, it would lessen the dead money on the team's 2020 cap because it could be accounted for over multiple years.
    Link to story
    Tom Brady player page

Cowboys | New regime could keep Randall Cobb in town
Impending free-agent WR Randall Cobb (Cowboys) is scheduled to become a free agent for the second consecutive offseason, but the presence of new Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy - who worked with Cobb over the first eight seasons of his pro career with the Green Bay Packers - may play a role in his re-signing with the Dallas Cowboys.'When it comes to free agency, you never know how it's going to play out. But it could (have an impact). You factor in all the different pros and cons to whoever's offering and who wants you, and you find out where you're valued, and how much you're valued,' Cobb told USA TODAY's Doug Farrar.
Footballguys view: Cobb had a bounce-back season in 2019. He finished the year with 55 catches for 828 yards and three touchdowns in 15 games. Cobb had a couple of 100-yard games last year and worked well as the No.3 receiver for the Cowboys.

Chargers | LA Chargers like current QB options
Los Angeles Chargers QBs Tyrod Taylor and Easton Stick remain on the roster after the team and Philip Rivers decided to mutually part ways Monday, Feb. 10. To that end, general manager Tom Telesco told AM570 LA Sports on Tuesday, Feb. 11, that he likes 'our internal options' when asked about replacing Rivers.
Footballguys view: Taylor has a ton of starting experience and Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn knows he can trust him. Stick is an interesting developmental quarterback that we're monitoring in super deep dynasty formats. All that being said, don't be surprised if the Chargers select a quarterback in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft.

Hard to believe many running backs will get big contracts, most don't seem to pan out.

    Friday Update

San Francisco 49ers WR Dante Pettis needs to show a 'much greater sense of urgency' in 2020, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Falcons | Russell Gage to man the slot?
Atlanta Falcons WR Russell Gage Jr. could be used as a slot receiver in 2020, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

    49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo conservative in 2019
San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo's 31 pass attempts of 20 or more yards in 2019 were tied for 29th in the league and were the fewest among quarterbacks who started all 16 games.

Steelers | Diontae Johnson undergoes hernia surgery
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson (hernia) recently underwent sports hernia surgery, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Thursday, Feb. 13.
Footballguys view: Johnson had flashes as a rookie in the 2019 season. The normal recovery from this type of surgery (4-6 weeks) could keep him limited in OTAs and minicamp later this spring. However, Johnson should be good to go for training camp in the summer. We'll see if he can push James Washington for the No.2 spot in the WR corps opposite of JuJu Smith-Schuster.
    Link to story

Buccaneers | Jameis Winston decision in limbo until free agency
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston is expected to remain an option for the team for the 2020 season at least until the beginning of the legal three-day free-agent tampering period March 16-18, according to head coach Bruce Arians Thursday, Feb. 13. 'Really nothing has changed,' Arians said. 'What's Door No. 2? You know? Can we make the one we have better? All those things you go through right now. ... And then, that's the problem, you get about three days to decide. The legal tampering period. Is somebody going to get let go? What's the trade values? It's really monotonous right now because you don't have any answers.'
Footballguys view: The Buccaneers are free to negotiate with Winston right now but they are choosing not to do so. Instead, they will see what becomes realistic in free agency (Philip Rivers?) and then make a decision on Winston's future. Most have the Bucs going in a different direction at quarterback in the 2020 season.
    Link to story
    Jameis Winston player page

Chargers | Tyrod Taylor could earn starting job
Los Angeles Chargers QB Tyrod Taylor could earn the starting spot for the 2020 season, according to head coach Anthony Lynn Thursday, Feb. 13. 'Tyrod Taylor is a heck of a quarterback,' Lynn told AM 570 LA Sports. 'We couldn't have a better backup right now, and now he has an opportunity to maybe step up into a starting role. I've had Tyrod before (in Buffalo), and I know what this young man brings to the table, in the passing game and the running game.'
Footballguys view: The Chargers might decide it's best for Taylor to begin the season as the starter. He may not stay in the starting lineup for the entire year if the Chargers draft a quarterback like Oregon's Justin Herbert in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. Taylor has plenty of starting experience and his rushing ability makes him an intriguing starter...but the team might only see him as a bridge quarterback until they find their next franchise quarterback.
    Link to story
    Tyrod Taylor player page

Steelers | Hope persists for James Conner
Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner is still viewed as a starter by the team, and he's expected to have a bounceback season in 2020, according to general manager Kevin Colbert Thursday, Feb. 13. 'James Conner had a disappointing season in James Conner's viewpoint and ours, as well,' Colbert said. 'Our point to James was, 'You had an unfortunate year.' The year before that he was one of the best in the league.'' ... 'He's still a young player. We think there's something there. We know there's talent there. We hope James can regain it. And, if he's healthy, there's no reason he shouldn't. We don't want to say we don't have a starting running back because we feel we do.'
Footballguys view: The Steelers have hope that Conner can have a bounce-back season...but they also need to make plans at the position in case he doesn't. This is a talented running back class coming into the league in the 2020 NFL draft. We won't be surprised if the Steelers select a running back at some point in the draft and perhaps they could even add one in free agency.
    Link to story
    James Conner player page

Chargers | Anthony Lynn signed through 2021
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn signed a one-year contract extension with the team Thursday, Feb. 13. He's now under contract through the 2021 season. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Footballguys view: That was the buzz when the extension was originally reported and now it's official. Lynn was in the final year of his contract, so the team decided to get him another year to see what happens. The Chargers have been a snake-bit team and seem to always have something (mainly injuries) get in their way. Lynn has a big task in replacing quarterback Philip Rivers and might attach himself to a rookie quarterback (Justin Herbert, Jordan Love) for 2020 and beyond.
    Link to story

Bengals | Andy Dalton fits with Bears
Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton will work with the team this offseason to facilitate a trade., and according to CBS NFL analyst John Breech, the Chicago Bears rank as the top fit.
Footballguys view: We could see Dalton landing with the Bears...it just depends on what the Bengals want for him in return. He would be a good veteran backup to Mitchell Trubisky, and Dalton could take over as the starter if Trubisky continues to struggle.
    Link to story
    Andy Dalton player page

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger to have check-up
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) has a check-up on his injured elbow scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21, in Los Angeles, and Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert says he is optimistic. 'All signs are good,' Colbert said Thursday, Feb. 13. 'We're hopeful he can make a complete recovery.'
Footballguys view: We're curious to see how much Roethlisberger has left in the tank. The Steelers don't have a quarterback of the future on the roster, so it's all about Roethlisberger for at least one more season.

Tennessee Titans TE Anthony Firkser on Thursday, Feb. 13, agreed to a one-year contract extension with the team.

Broncos | Courtland Sutton took huge leap
Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton caught 72 passes for 1,112 yards with three drops in 2019 after finishing with a 42-704 stat line with nine drops in his rookie season of 2018.
Footballguys view: Sutton was about a year ahead of schedule, and he hasn't even shown the best he can be. He was able to make that production leap in 2019 all while dealing with three quarterbacks (Joe Flacco, Brandon Allen, Drew Lock) throwing him the ball. Sutton is a WR2 for Fantasy GMs in 2020 but the upside to be a top-10 wide receiver this upcoming season.
    Link to story

Jets | Robby Anderson miscast with Jets?
New York Jets WR Robby Anderson, a pending free agent this offseason, ranks fourth in the league with 112 targets of 20-plus yards since 2016, but the Jets' quarterbacks have been unable to take advantage of that with a 28.3 percent accuracy rate on such passes during that time span, ranking 31st in the league.
Footballguys view: Anderson is likely to get a huge-money contract in free agency this year. If the Bengals wrap up A.J. Green, Anderson is arguably the best wide receiver available on the open market. Watch out for the Panthers to show interest in Anderson. New Panthers head coach Matt Rhule was Temple's head coach when Anderson was in college. Anderson's deep speed would be a welcome addition for many teams in the league, but the Panthers may be his landing spot.

Cardinals | Kenyan Drake has talked deal with Cards
Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent RB Kenyan Drake has had some contract talks with the Cardinals since the end of the season, and general manager Steve Keim said he has told Drake that the team wants him back.
Footballguys view: This seems like a foregone conclusion. Drake had fantastic success as the Cardinals starter and they should continue forward with him as the lead back. Due to salary cap restraints, the team is also likely to keep David Johnson around for the 2020 season.

NFL | Greg Olsen still talking with three teams
Free-agent TE Greg Olsen (Panthers) is having contract negotiations with the Buffalo Bills, Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks, according to a source.

Redskins | Paul Richardson officially cut
Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins WR Paul Richardson was officially released Friday, Feb. 14.
Footballguys view: Richardson has a ton of speed but he just can't stay healthy. Even dating back to his days in college at the University of Colorado, there's always something holding him back. Some team will sign him for veteran depth, likely for an inexpensive pricetag.

NFL | Dez Bryant's sights on NFL only
Free-agent WR Dez Bryant continues to lobby for a reunion with the Dallas Cowboys and isn't considering a prove-it trial in the XFL. 'Nah, not at all,' Bryant said recently. 'I know I can still play. That's not an issue for me. I have high confidence in myself. No disrespect to the XFL, I just know I can play in (the NFL), that's not a question.'
Footballguys view: Good luck with that.

Broncos | Theo Riddick leaning on resume
Denver Broncos RB Theo Riddick (shoulder), a pending free agent, will rely on his resume in free agency after failing to play a regular-season snap in 2019 due to a preseason shoulder injury. 'Hopefully my resume speaks for itself and we go from there,' Riddick said. 'I know I'll be somewhere. ... You have to be open to everything and what (stinks) the most is that I'm a committed person and I wanted to show Broncos fans what I had and what I could do for this team and unfortunately, it didn't work out. Hopefully, the coaches still think highly of me and give me another shot.'
Footballguys view: Riddick didn't look like himself in 2018 when he was with the Lions. Then he signs with the Broncos for a fresh start and ends up missing the entire season due to injury. There is likely a team out there that will sign him but don't expect much if he does see the field.

Cardinals | David Johnson won't be cut Fri Feb 14, 11:08 AM
Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is not an option to be cut, according to general manager Steve Keim. 'You can't just have one back,' Keim said.
Footballguys view: There is over $16 million in dead money remaining on Johnson's contract. That means they're not going to release him and it makes trading him almost impossible. Kenyan Drake is set to be an unrestricted free agent but the Cardinals should keep him around with a new contract. That means Johnson is likely to stay as a reserve player behind Drake in 2020.
