NFL Player News - Week of 2/3/20

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

KC - Kansas City wins Super Bowl LIV

    Source: ESPN.com

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes completed 26 of his 42 passes for 286 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, and he rushed nine times for 29 yards and a touchdown in a 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV Sunday, Feb. 2. RB Damien Williams rushed 17 times for 104 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 29 yards and a score. WR Tyreek Hill caught nine of his 16 targets for 105 yards, WR Sammy Watkins hauled in five passes for 98 yards, and TE Travis Kelce caught all six of his targets for 43 yards and a touchdown. SS Bashaud Breeland finished with a team-high seven tackles, including two tackles for loss, and a pass defensed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

What a game for Kansas City. It took Mahomes a bit to get going but once they found their groove, they rolled. This team is much more than just Mahomes though. An outstanding season by an outstanding team and coaching staff.

IND - Indy to show interest in QB Philip Rivers?

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent QB Philip Rivers may receive interest from the Indianapolis Colts if he is available in the free-agent market, in the opinion of NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This speculation has been out there for some time. Colts head coach Frank Reich was the Chargers QB coach when Rivers had arguably the best season of his pro career (2013). Rivers is likely done with the Chargers, and he could land with the Colts or the Buccaneers...or somebody else...this offseason.

NO - QB Taysom Hill may receive top tender

Source: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler

New Orleans Saints restricted free-agent QB Taysom Hill may receive the first-round tender offer this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It seems like the Saints are pretty intent on keeping Hill around as a gadget player and change-of-pace quarterback. Drew Brees and Teddy Bridgewater are also set to be free agents this offseason, so the Saints have some interesting decisions to make at the position. First things first, Brees has to announce that he's going to keep playing and not retire.

DAL - QB Dak Prescott may skip workouts

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent QB Dak Prescott may skip offseason workouts if he does not receive a long-term contract this offseason. Prescott is expected to receive the franchise tag.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That wouldn't be a surprise to see Prescott stay away from the facility while a new long-term contract is worked out. With the franchise tag, the Cowboys would be able to have until mid-July to work out a contract for Prescott. With quarterbacks and the tons of money involved, taking extra time (if you're the Cowboys) and extra precaution (if you're Prescott) makes sense.

OAK - Oakland expected to pursue QB Tom Brady

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New England Patriots impending free-agent QB Tom Brady likely will be a target for the Oakland Raiders if he hits the free-agent market, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zero surprise here. The Raiders want to make a splash in their first season in Las Vegas, and getting Brady in free agency would do just that. Raiders head coach Jon Gruden loves his veteran quarterbacks and the team could then move on from Derek Carr as their starter.

OAK - Oakland an option for WR Robby Anderson?

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets impending free-agent WR Robby Anderson may receive interest from the Oakland Raiders this offseason, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Rich Cimini.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Anderson is going to get paid this offseason. He's arguably the best wide receiver to hit free agency in 2020 and his speed will be coveted by many a team in the NFL.

SF - TE George Kittle in line for big extension

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle likely will receive a lucrative contract extension this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A fifth-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft, Kittle has certainly outplayed his draft position and is one of the best in the game. He's entering the final year of his contract in 2020, but the team should extend him for a price that could make him the highest-paid tight end in football. Even though he only played 14 games in 2019, Kittle finished as the No.3 fantasy tight end in standard-scoring leagues.

LAC - LAC interested in QB Tom Brady?

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to be among the teams that could be interested in New England Patriots impending free-agent QB Tom Brady, according to multiple sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chargers are likely moving on from free agent veteran Philip Rivers so they'll be in need of a starting quarterback. The addition of Brady would be a big splash and he could head back home to California where he grew up. With the Raiders and the Chargers most interested in the future Hall of Fame quarterback, it looks like Brady could end up in the AFC West in 2020.

NE - NE willing to pay QB Tom Brady $30M annually?

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

The New England Patriots are reportedly willing to pay impending free-agent QB Tom Brady $30 million annually to keep him with the team, according to multiple sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're sure Patriots owner Robert Kraft does not want to lose Brady. Paying him $30 million sounds about right for the quarterback market...even at Brady's advanced age. He's not quite the player he used to be but Brady wants to play a few more years and could be capable of doing that provided he stays healthy.

KC - QB Patrick Mahomes still not at 100 percent

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) is still not fully recovered from the dislocated kneecap which caused him to miss several games during the regular season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mahomes was hurt against the Broncos in Week 7 and had to miss a few games. However, he is not expected to need offseason surgery and should be completely healthy entering next year following a period of rest and rehab.

CAR - TE Ian Thomas set to shine in 2020?

Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers TE Ian Thomas is positioned to be a 'breakout candidate' in 2020 following the addition of offensive coordinator Joe Brady and the impending departure of TE Greg Olsen, according to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see that happening for Thomas. He's the player the team drafted to eventually replace veteran Greg Olsen. With Olsen and the Panthers parting ways, it means Thomas is the clear-cut starter and he has a great skill set. Now, his fantasy relevance depends on who is the starting quarterback for the Panthers. The future of Cam Newton is unknown at this time but the team could put him on the trade block this offseason.

NFL - James Proche working his way up boards

    Source: ESPN - Todd McShay

Southern Methodist WR James Proche is 'starting to look like a midrounder' in the 2020 NFL Draft after his performance during Senior Bowl week, according to Todd McShay of ESPN.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see Proche working his way into the mid rounds of the 2020 NFL draft. Proche is your classic slot receiver, so naturally a team like the Patriots should be interested. The SMU wideout did a good job of making plays at the Senior Bowl earlier this year.

    Tuesday Update

CAR - Carolina officially cuts TE Greg Olsen

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen was officially released Monday, Feb. 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Olsen could be reuniting with Ron Rivera in Washington, where he would be presumably relevant for fantasy leagues. Another possibility is retirement and a move to the booth, where Olsen should be an instant hit.

NE - QB Tom Brady not seeking $30 million

Source: NFL Network - Michael Giardi

New England Patriots impending free-agent QB Tom Brady is not seeking $30 million per year, according to a source. Brady feels adding weapons to the offense is a priority, though.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brady is in charge of this process at this point and he should feel like he can dictate terms beyond salary. The Chargers might be in a better position to give him weapons than the Patriots right now, but the Patriots should still be considered the favorite to have his services next year.

PHI - WR Nelson Agholor not expected back

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles impending free-agent WR Nelson Agholor is not expected to re-sign with the Eagles this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Agholor was vastly overpaid in his fifth year option season at over nine million dollars and has become known for his suspect hands. He was a Chip Kelly pick and the last holdover from the 2015 class.

PHI - Philly expected to pursue WR Demarcus Robinson

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent WR Demarcus Robinson is expected to receive interest from the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robinson makes sense in Philadelphia with their shortage of healthy wide receivers at the end of the season and the commonalities between the Chiefs and Eagles offensive systems. He has a chance to have a larger role in Philadelphia than the one he had in Kansas City. His likely departure will free up snaps for Mecole Hardman.

SF - RB Matt Breida not involved in Super Bowl LIV

Source: The Athletic - Greg Auman

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida did not play a single offensive staff in Super Bowl LIV, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Breida was prominent in the backfield to begin the season, but the emergence of Raheem Mostert made him extraneous. He'll open 2020 as a restricted free agent and one that the 49ers may not tender to protect his rights since he fell off. Breida's ability is not a question, but his durability is, so he's a good penny stock in dynasty leagues right now.

MIN - Minnesota a fit for Jake Fromm?

    Source: BleacherReport.com - Matt Miller

The Minnesota Vikings could target Georgia QB Jake Fromm in the second round as a possible successor to QB Kirk Cousins, in the opinion of Bleacher Report's Matt Miller, who adds that Fromm is considered a 'top-50' prospect right now.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cousins could be in his last year with the Vikings, along with head coach Mike Zimmer. The Vikings aren't going to have a top performing pass offense in any event, but this uncertainty at quarterback should inform the dynasty values of Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen.

LAC - TE Hunter Henry staying put?

Source: The Athletic - Daniel Popper

Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent TE Hunter Henry will likely end up signing a four-year deal worth 'somewhere between $34 million and $38 million' over the life of the contract, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Those numbers sound right with much lesser tight ends getting about six million per season in recent free agency periods. Staying the Chargers or going to New England are among the possibilities for the productive but not always healthy Henry.

DEN - WR Courtland Sutton excited for offense

Source: The Athletic - Nicki Jhabvala

Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton said he is 'looking forward' to working in offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur's system. 'Hearing that we're going to be in a lot of 11 personnel and throwing the ball a lot,' Sutton said. 'I'm excited about that.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sutton's numbers weren't as good as his play in 2019, as Sutton endured three quarterbacks, two of which were among the worst to take the field last year. He'll get to riff with a developing Drew Lock in 2020.

Rams | Todd Gurley a potential trade candidate?

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley could potentially end up on the trading block this offseason as the team looks for way to create room under the salary cap, in the opinion of ESPN's Lindsey Thiry.

Cardinals | David Johnson nearing the end in Arizona?

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is scheduled to earn $10.2 million in 2020, with the entire amount guaranteed on the third day of the new league year. In the opinion of ESPN's Josh Weinfuss, it is possible Johnson will be a cap casualty with his 'production and contract going in opposite directions.'

Bears | Chicago could target QB during offseason

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton or impending free-agent Marcus Mariota (Titans) are two realistic options for the Chicago Bears when the new league year begins, in the opinion of ESPN's Jeff Dickerson, who predicts the team will look to acquire an experienced backup quarterback to push starter Mitchell Trubisky.

Chiefs | Sammy Watkins plans on playing in 2020

Kansas City Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins intends to play next season but told Sirius XM NFL Radio that he will look to take some 'down time.''I'm really focused on my health....mental health,' Watkins added.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson lobbies for more tempo

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson expressed a desire for the offense to utilize more of an up-tempo attack in 2020 during an interview with Pro Football Talk Live last week.'I mean we've always been really good at two-minute (offense),' Wilson said. 'We've always been really good in those end of the half, those not always hurry-up situations, but those up-tempo situations (and) moments. And the reality is this: I think the defense gets tired, first thing. And I think the second thing is that, you know, I really know kind of what I want to get after them, how we want to get after them, especially in those moments. And guys just make plays in those moments. I think the freedom of just going after it and just scoring as many points, you know?'

    Friday Update

Titans | Derrick Henry eyeing big money

Tennessee Titans impending free-agent RB Derrick Henry said that Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott's contract 'is the floor' for what he will be expecting with his next contract.

Footballguys view: Henry should command whatever price tag he wants. The Titans should pay that price tag as Henry is everything to the offense. Elliott signed a six-year, $90 million contract with $50 million guaranteed and $28 million was guaranteed at signing. The numbers for Henry should be pretty similar.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard out in Cincy?

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard could be a cap casualty this offseason, according to Joe Goodberry of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: A fresh start would be a good thing for Bernard. There's more there for him and he could perhaps find a team that would give him a larger role...or at least the opportunity for a larger role. The Bengals would save $2.8 million in cap space by releasing Bernard.

    Link to story

Raiders | Tyrell Williams a popular target

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr had a 112.6 quarterback rating when targeting WR Tyrell Williams in 2019, the highest rating to any receiver in his career.

Footballguys view: Williams was a popular target but he was supposed to be the Raiders No.2 receiver in 2019. Instead, after the Antonio Brown fiasco, Williams was thrust into the No.1 role and didn't post massive numbers in 13 games. We should see the Raiders emphasize finding a true No.1 receiver either through free agency or the draft.

    Link to story

    Tyrell Williams player page

49ers | Emmanuel Sanders eyeing return?

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent WR Emmanuel Sanders said he hasn't thought much about next season yet but enjoyed his time with the team in 2019. 'I love the Niners organization, so we're going to see what's to happen,' Sanders said.

Footballguys view: Sanders fits what the 49ers want to do. He's set to be an unrestricted free agent, but Sanders is unlikely to break the bank at his age. We'll see if the two sides can work something out before free agency hits.

    Link to story

    Emmanuel Sanders player page

Broncos | More catches for Phillip Lindsay?

Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay will be used more as a receiver out of the backfield in 2020, according to offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur.

Footballguys view: Running backs in Shurmur's offense usually catch a lot of passes. Lindsay has caught 35 passes each of the last two seasons but he might be in for more of a 50-catch season under the new Broncos offensive coordinator.

    Link to story

    Phillip Lindsay player page

Rams | Todd Gurley to talk with team

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley is scheduled to meet with the team in the near future to talk about his season and his situation moving forward.

Footballguys view: There has been speculation that Gurley could be put on the trade block this offseason. He carries a cap hit of $17.2 million in 2020 and there is a whopping $12.6 million remaining in dead money. That means the team is unlikely to cut him but in the NFL you just never know. We'll see if Gurley is going to stick with the team or get dealt in the next month or so.

Broncos | New OC eager to work with Drew Lock

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock was on the New York Giants' radar during the 2019 draft, and now Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, the former Giants head coach, says he's eager to pair with Lock. 'I'm very excited about being able to work with Drew Lock,' Shurmur said Thursday, Feb. 6.

Footballguys view: Shurmur is the best thing that could happen to Lock. The veteran offensive coach reiterated several times in his debut press conference on Thursday that he was going to craft a system that fits his talent. Lock is athletic and has a rocket arm, so expect the team to be more vertical with their passing game in 2020.

Redskins | Dwayne Haskins will begin as QB1
Washington Redskins QB Dwayne Haskins will begin the era of head coach Ron Rivera as the team's No. 1 quarterback, according to senior vice president of player development Doug Williams Friday, Feb. 7. 'The new staff knows that Dwayne Haskins is the starting quarterback here,' Williams said. 'The only thing that can happen is for Dwayne to give it back to them. It's up to him to learn the playbook, wear the coaches out. He's got to stay at the facility until they run him out of the building. ...'Dwayne has a long way to go. But like I told him, he was doing what we expected him to do. He was ascending. Hopefully the way he goes now, he keeps going up. All eyes are going to be on him. At the same time you've got a new coaching staff and they're not married to him.'

Falcons | Julio Jones among all-time greats
Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones, with 12,125 yards, trails only Randy Moss (12,193) on the list of players with the most receiving yards by the age of 31 in league history. Jones turned 31 Saturday, Feb. 8.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott turned down huge offer last year
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott reportedly turned down a contract extension last September which would have paid him $33 million a year, according to multiple sources, in the hopes of landing a deal which would have eclipsed the average annual value of Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson's four-year, $140 million deal.

Panthers | Carolina mum on Cam Newton
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot) won't be discussed much in the team's 2020 plans until he's closer to full health.

Footballguys view: The Panthers want to see how Newton recovers from the foot injury that bothered him last year. That being said, they'll still try to put him on the trade block. At least that seems how things are trending in this situation.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant asks to return
Free-agent WR Dez Bryant recently texted team vice president Stephen Jones saying that he would like a chance to return to the Cowboys. 'He has texted me that he would like to come back,' Jones said via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. 'We have nothing but great respect for Dez and what he accomplished here. Certainly, as we look forward into the future we look at all opportunities and all potential players that could maybe help us out.'

Footballguys view: That means 'no thanks.' Bryant has not played since 2017 and was out of the league last year. He is recovered from the Achilles' injury he suffered in 2018 but at 31-years old teams don't seem too fired up to work him out. We doubt that Bryant sees the field again in the NFL.
