NFL Player News - Week of 8/19/19

SEA - WR D.K. Metcalf Needs Knee Surgery

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Tom Pelissero writes: "D.K. Metcalf needs knee surgery, per Pete Carroll. Don't think he'll be out long."

"Metcalf's injury happened a few days ago. Carroll said doctors have a clear look on the MRI. Think it'll be a really quick recovery. No details on type of surgery. I asked if Metcalf has shot for Week 1 -- Carroll just repeated they're very optimistic."

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was a surprise dropped by Carroll late Sunday night. Stay tuned to see what exactly the team is thinking and how long he might be out.

OAK - WR Antonio Brown skips practice amid helmet dispute

Source: Las Vegas Review Journal - Myles Simmons

Oakland Raiders WR Antonio Brown wasn't at practice Sunday, Aug. 18, because he's upset about his ongoing helmet issue with the NFL. General manager Mike Mayock said the team has 'exhausted all avenues' and it's time for Brown to be 'all in or all out.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Just when you thought it was all over. The team hopes that Brown is ready and willing to play when Week 1 of the regular season gets here. The drama continues when it comes to Brown's helmet, but the team feels his feet are good enough to practice on when he returns. Who knows when that actually will be.

NYJ - Le'Veon Bell could sit out preseason

    Source: SNY - Nick Wojton

New York Jets RB Le'Veon Bell hasn't played in the team's first two preseason games, and head coach Adam Gase is noncommital about Bell playing in the third. 'We'll kind of see how next week goes,' Gase said Friday, Aug. 16. 'He's played a lot of football. And I like where he's at right now. I love how he's working. If I feel like there's a need to play him next week, we will. If he has a good week of practice and it's not worth it for us to get him out there, then we won't.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see if Bell can get out there for a Jets debut in the preseason. If Bell doesn't play in Week 3 of the preseason (the dress rehearsal for the regular season), then there's little chance of him playing in Week 4 when starters typically rest.

NE - WR Josh Gordon placed on non-football injury list

    Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates

New England Patriots WR Josh Gordon was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Sunday, Aug. 18, upon his conditional reinstatement.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is basically just a procedural move for the Patriots and was not unexpected. Gordon has been reinstated but the team wants to clear some room for him and will use the NFI list to get him some time to get used to being with the team again. When healthy and motivated, Gordon has lots of upside and ability. With Gordon reinstated, Fantasy GMs can grab him as a flex play at a current ADP of WR46 (10.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

WAS - QB Case Keenum heading toward Week 1 start

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Washington Redskins QB Case Keenum is on track to the be the Week 1 starter under center, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter Sunday, Aug. 18. Head coach Jay Gruden said Colt McCoy(leg) may not be ready to return from a broken leg until 'two or three weeks into the season.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Keenum should open the season as the starter but Washington should turn things over to 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins at some point. While Keenum is a 'bridge' quarterback, Haskins is the franchise quarterback of the future. He'll start soon enough.

TEN - Boston Globe: Tennessee QB job not settled?

Source: The Boston Globe - Ben Volin

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota isn't a lock to open the season as the team's starter, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. He says even if Mariota does beat out offseason addition Ryan Tannehill, he will have a short leash.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No offense to the Volin, but we put more stock in the Titans beat writers than we do the Boston Globe when it comes to the Tennessee QB situation. There are quite a few people close to the team who feel Mariota is a lock to start Week 1. Although this kind of "uncertainty with Mariota" talk seems to be gaining a little traction. We would be very surprised if Mariota is not the Week 1 starter. But it's also likely true he could get a quick hook if he struggles during the regular season.

NE - WR Dontrelle Inman has request for release granted

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The New England Patriots granted WR Dontrelle Inman's request to be released Sunday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The writing has been on the wall for Inman at Patriots camp. With Josh Gordon getting reinstated by the league, Inman's chances of making the 53-man roster in New England were slim and none. Now, the veteran receiver gets a chance to latch on with a new team with a better opportunity.

NYG - WR Sterling Shepard provides positive update

    Source: Giants.com - Dan Salomone

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard (thumb) said Sunday, Aug. 18, his thumb has healed pretty fast and he is 'feeling good.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shepard is out of his non-contact jersey but he's not out of the splint for his thumb. "I wouldn't say I'm all the way back, but I'm pretty close. I'm where I need to be." Shepard said.

GB - TE Jimmy Graham leaves after injury

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers TE Jimmy Graham (finger) ran off the field Sunday, Aug. 18, after appearing to dislocate his finger, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No update on Graham here. He did not return to practice and we'll know more about the severity of this injury when the team releases more information. Some practice reporters called this a 'jammed' finger which sounds less serious than a dislocated finger even though it could be the same thing.

IND - Jonathan Williams suffered broken rib

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Williams (chest) was diagnosed with a broken rib Sunday, Aug 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams has talent as a runner but has not been able to stick on any team's roster for that long. He's been banged up a bit during his pro career. The rib injury isn't believed to be a long-term issue.

JAX - RB Ryquell Armstead could play Thursday

Source: The Athletic - Phillip Heilman

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Ryquell Armstead (concussion) is on the last day of the NFL's concussion protocol, according to head coach Doug Marrone Sunday, Aug. 18. Armstead could play in the team's third preseason game Thursday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're excited to see Armstead out there on the field. He's got explosive playmaking ability and could be the primary backup to the oft-injured Leonard Fournette.

TB - Dare Ogunbowale locking down RB3 job

Source: The Athletic - Greg Auman

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Dare Ogunbowale 'seems solidly entrenched' as the team's third running back, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic Sunday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Now we just need to see if Peyton Barber or Ronald Jones emerges as the lead back. Ogunbowale was working with the first-team offense during Sunday's practice, but head coach Bruce Arians said that was largely because Jones was dealing with knee soreness.

BUF - TE Tyler Kroft moving toward return

Source: The Athletic - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills TE Tyler Kroft (foot) is 'moving in the right direction' in his recovery from foot surgery, according to head coach Sean McDermott Sunday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kroft was signed to a three-year, $18.75 million contract earlier this offseason. The veteran could be in the mix for the No. 1 tight end position but he's far behind in the competition. McDermott didn't provide a timeline for Kroft's return to the field but added he has been working on his own behind the scenes.

DAL - TE Jason Witten dealt with jitters

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten said he experienced some jitters Saturday, Aug. 17, as he made his return to live action for the first time since ending his one-year retirement. Witten caught one pass for 10 yards in the Cowboys' preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. 'A year away from the game, all the work to get back here since March, getting in shape, getting your body ready, having an opportunity, I know I've got a lot to prove,' Witten said. 'It wasn't perfect. I thought we're on schedule with the things I want to work on. Able to get a third-down conversion. Dak showed he had the confidence on that. Some of the other things in the passing game, running game, I felt good with. It's always tricky when you're coming back out here ... so the jitters were real. A lot of work to get back to here, but it felt good.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's...interesting a veteran like Witten would deal with jitters. He's got a ton of experience and should shake off any nervous feelings quickly.

WAS - QB Colt McCoy saw specialist about injury

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy (leg) said Sunday, Aug. 18, that he has visited a foot specialist to have his injured right leg examined as he's had trouble getting a full push off the leg when passing.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCoy is the No. 3 quarterback for Washington and has no shot of moving up the depth chart before the start of the regular season. McCoy said there has been no setback, but there's still no timetable when he'll be 100 percent.

BAL - WR Miles Boykin sits out practice

    Source: WNST.net - Luke Jones

Baltimore Ravens WR Miles Boykin (unknown) was among the players missing practice Sunday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like the rookie wide receiver in dynasty formats and will watch for more information to be released. No reason was immediately given for Boykin's absence.

PHI - PHI backup QB situation somewhat unsettled

Source: The Athletic - Zach Berman

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said no decision has been made on whether QB Josh McCown or QB Nate Sudfeld (wrist) would be the team's second quarterback once Sudfeld's broken left wrist has fully healed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sudfeld is a tall pocket passer and we've always appreciated his skill set in deep dynasty formats. McCown is the seasoned veteran who gives the Eagles quality depth if starter Carson Wentz is banged up again.

"Well I'm gonna take it back to how much he sweats, again. He promises that it's not a problem in games, and it remains to be seen because his shorts today were soaked. And, uh, he says it's not a problem on gameday, so the moment of truth Friday night. But apparently, you know, when they keep those domes air-conditioned and you get a break on the bench and you sit with the cooling fans, I'm hoping that really helps. So that's a big thing I'm gonna take away from Friday night, is how tough was it to grip the ball after he snaps it to me. Uh, if it is tough we might be in pistol and shotgun all year, which coach [Gary] Kubiak and Kevin [Stefanski] wouldn't like very much."

    Tuesday Update

OAK - WR Antonio Brown returns to practice

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com

Oakland Raiders WR Antonio Brown returned to practice Monday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown's helmet issue is still something he is going to fight for, but the league has already deemed the one he wants to use not up to standards. He may not play in the preseason, but Brown should be ready for Week 1.

GB - TE Jimmy Graham doesn't need surgery

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers TE Jimmy Graham (finger) doesn't need surgery, according to head coach Matt LaFleur. Graham will 'be all right,' said LaFleur.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's good news for the veteran tight end. He had to leave practice after jamming his finger, and without surgery Graham should be back out there in the near future. There is no question about his Week 1 status.

SEA - Surgery for D.K. Metcalf

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks WR D.K. Metcalf (knee) will have a surgical procedure performed on his knee Tuesday, Aug. 20, according to head coach Pete Carroll, but Carroll said he doesn't expect a long recovery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It sounds like a knee scope but nothing specific is yet known about this injury. Consider him questionable at best for the start of the regular season.

NE - WR Julian Edelman activated from NFI list

    Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates

Updating a previous story, New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (thumb) has been activated from the Non-Football Injury list, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Edelman should be good to go for Week 1 of the regular season. He's going to be targeted early and often, and that makes Edelman quite valuable in PPR leagues. We might see him and Josh Gordon as the top two receivers for the Patriots to open the year.

JAX - RB Ryquell Armstead a full participant

Source: The Florida Times-Union - John Reid

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Ryquell Armstead (concussion) fully participated in practice Monday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the rookie running back here. He's behind oft-injured starter Leonard Fournette so add Armstead super late in your draft or keep him on your waiver wire speed dial in most re-draft leagues.

CIN - WR John Ross may return next week

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Baby

Cincinnati Bengals WR John Ross (hamstring) could return to practice as early as Sunday, Aug. 25, according to head coach Zac Taylor.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ross can get open deep and take the top off the defense when healthy...it's just the staying healthy part that has been a big problem for him as a pro. Taylor said he believes Ross may be able to play in Week 1 if he gets two weeks of practice.

NE - WR Demaryius Thomas not ready yet

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Reiss

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots WR Demaryius Thomas (Achilles) participated in a light workout Monday, Aug. 19, but is still on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas is getting back out there to get some light work in and he may be ready in the near future. With Josh Gordon back, the Patriots WR corps is looking better. Getting Thomas back would be a boost too. He's not the same player he used to be, but Thomas is a seasoned veteran who could be a reliable target for Tom Brady.

BUF - TE Dawson Knox back on field

Source: The Athletic - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills TE Dawson Knox (hamstring) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 19. He has been sidelined since the start of training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Knox could be the starter for the Bills but he's behind in the competition. In college at Ole Miss, Knox drew some comparisons to Kyle Rudolph because of his all-around ability as a receiver and blocker.

CAR - QB Cam Newton, RB Christian McCaffrey set to play

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton and RB Christian McCaffrey are scheduled to play with the rest of the team's starters in Thursday, Aug. 22's preseason game against the New England Patriots. 'They've been the gold standard for a long time,'' head coach Ron Rivera said. 'You want to go out and see just how good you are. It is a good measuring stick as to who we can be as a football team.''

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reporters around the team have marveled at Newton's deep passing in camp. He struggled with shoulder problems last year and had to change his game. With Newton near full strength, we could see a return of the deep pass in 2019.

IND - D'Onta Foreman sticking with team

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Indianapolis Colts RB D'Onta Foreman (biceps) will remain with the team while rehabbing torn biceps. He's expected to miss four months but the team intends to keep him for next year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Foreman is ineligible to be designated to return since he was put on I.R. before final cuts. He's a talented big back but injuries have robbed him of the potential he once had. Foreman is no lock for the 53-man roster in 2020.

TEN - RB Derrick Henry makes long-awaited return

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry (foot) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 19. It's his first practice since Day 1 of training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A good sign for the centerpiece of the Titans offense. Henry has a current ADP of RB22 (4.07) in 12-team PPR leagues. If he stays healthy, the veteran back could easily outperform that draft position.

WAS - RB Derrius Guice scheduled to play Thursday

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Washington Redskins RB Derrius Guice (knee) is scheduled to play Thursday, Aug. 22, in a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We all know Guice has talent, he just needs to stay healthy so he can put it on full display. This game is likely to be his only action of the preseason.

MIA - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick not a lock to start

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is not cemented as the team's starter, despite him starting the third preseason game, according to head coach Brian Flores.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's what Flores has to say, but all signs point towards Fitzpatrick beginning the season as the starter. If (when?) he struggles, the team could turn things over to 2018 first-round pick Josh Rosen.

PIT - WR Diontae Johnson has work to do

Source: The Athletic - Mark Kaboly

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson won't be used much to start the season, according to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson has speed and explosive playmaking ability but he's far from a finished product. He reminds us of a young Emmanuel Sanders, but like Sanders it might take some time for him to play up to his potential.

    Wednesday Update

IND - QB Andrew Luck to sit out practice another week

Source: The Athletic - Zak Keefer

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (ankle) will not participate in practice for at least another week, according to head coach Frank Reich, who noted Luck's issue is a matter of 'full-speed movement versus pain threshold.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy GMs are nervous about this Luck injury...and for good reason. Missing another week of practice further puts his status for Week 1 in question. We'll see if Luck can actually get out there for practice during the final week of the preseason.

DAL - Other extensions not imminent for Cowboys?

    Source: DallasCowboys.com - David Helman

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday, Aug. 20, is doesn't feel like there's any real movement on contract extensions for QB Dak Prescott, RB Ezekiel Elliott or WR Amari Cooper, according to David Helman of DallasCowboys.com. Jones added things could move fast.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys have some big-money deals to hand out, and they are dragging their feet at this time...at least with these three players. On Tuesday, the Cowboys signed LB Jaylon Smith to a new five-year, $64 million extension. We'll see if there's movement on any of the 'big 3' in the near future.

LAC - WR Dontrelle Inman back in the fold

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

The Los Angeles Chargers signed free agent WR Dontrelle Inman (Patriots) Tuesday, Aug. 20, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Inman was with the Chargers from 2014-2017 and has plenty of experience catching passes from Philip Rivers. He's now back to compete for a spot on the depth chart behind Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Travis Benjamin.

DEN - TE Noah Fant dealing with ankle sprain

Source: The Athletic - Nicki Jhabvala

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos TE Noah Fant (ankle) was diagnosed with a 'mild' ankle sprain Tuesday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fant might miss some time with this injury. He went down with the injury on Monday night against the 49ers. It doesn't seem like a serious injury, but the Broncos should be careful with their 2019 first-round pick. Fant could be a big part of their passing game in 2019.

PHI - RB Jordan Howard not conceding much

    Source: NJ.com - Zack Rosenblatt

Philadelphia Eagles RB Jordan Howard has 'ran the ball quite well throughout camp,' according to NJ.com's Zack Rosenblatt, who concedes that rookie Miles Sanders will 'almost certainly' overtake Howard at some point. However, Rosenblatt expects Howard will stay play a role and be one of the team's top options when it comes to short-yardage situations and in the red zone.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Howard can be the banger for the team with Sanders working more as a 'lightning' type of back. If you play in a PPR league, then Sanders has more value because of his receiving ability. Howard has a current ADP of RB37 (8.05) and Sanders is at RB28 (6.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NE - WR Demaryius Thomas cleared to practice

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots WR Demaryius Thomas (Achilles) was activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting activated off the PUP list means the Patriots don't think Thomas will miss six weeks to begin the season. He might not be ready for Week 1, but Thomas feels like he could be. With Josh Gordon returning, any potential fantasy value Thomas had (if healthy) takes a hit.

SEA - RB Rashaad Penny eyeing bigger Year 2 role

    Source: ESPN.com - Brady Henderson

Seattle Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny has routinely flashed the ability to 'make one-handed grabs with the same ease as some of the NFL's stickiest-fingered receivers' and is expected to be a bigger factor than he was during his rookie season, according to ESPN's Brady Henderson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A first-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Penny didn't stand out as much as expected during his rookie season. Penny echoed sentiments from Seahawks RB coach Chad Morton that he and Chris Carson can become the same kind of one-two punch the New Orleans Saints enjoyed with Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram over the last two seasons.

ARI - WR Hakeem Butler suffers serious hand injury

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Arizona Cardinals WR Hakeem Butler (hand) was diagnosed with an avulsion fracture in his hand and is a candidate for the Reserve/Injured list, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the big-bodied rookie here. Butler was working to carve out a spot on the depth chart with fellow rookies Andy Isabella and Keesean Johnson. That trio of rookie is of course behind Larry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk in the pecking order. Butler is now likely to be shut down for at least half of his rookie season.

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (thumb) was diagnosed with a badly sprained right thumb Tuesday, Aug. 20. Although he is out indefinitely, he will not require surgery, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lock thought it was a mild sprain but it turns out to be a little more serious. This changes the Broncos pecking order at quarterback. Kevin Hogan is now more likely to make the 53-man roster as the backup to Joe Flacco. When Lock is healthy, he should take over that spot.

HOU - RB Duke Johnson hits practice field

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) practiced with his new team for the first time Tuesday, Aug. 20, after being sidelined with a hamstring injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're excited to see how Johnson is used as the change-of-pace back behind Lamar Miller. Johnson is a fine pass-catcher and he can make plays in space. That gives him flex appeal in PPR leagues. Stay tuned.

MIN - WR Olabisi Johnson showing versatility

    Source: ESPN.com - Courtney Cronin

Minnesota Vikings WR Olabisi Johnson's versatility as a receiver and ability to play special teams have earned him more playing time, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. 'He's a guy that can play multiple spots, and I think the more he has done that, the more he's been able to get involved in the offense,' Zimmer said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zimmer was originally disappointed with the 2019 seventh-round pick out of Colorado State. Earlier in camp, reports surfaced that Olabisi was struggling with picking up the offense. That no longer seems to be the case, and Olabisi could push for a spot on the 53-man roster. The Vikings are looking for an upgrade at the No. 3 receiver behind Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs.

PHI - WR DeSean Jackson thriving in Philly

    Source: ESPN.com - Tim McManus

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson has made 'at least one splash play' during each practice, according to to Tim McManus of ESPN.com, and McManus believes Jackson is going to 'do some damage this season.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's just like old times. Jackson returns to the Eagles this year to be the deep threat for Carson Wentz. That role and his skill set make Jackson a flex-worthy player for your fantasy team. Jackson has a current ADP of WR48 (10.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    Thursday Update

ARZ - Cardinals Finally Officially Sign WR Michael Crabtree

    Source: AZCardininals.com - Darren Urban

The Cardsinals finally agreed to a one-year contract with veteran wideout Michael Crabtree.

Darren Urban reports, "Crabtree, 31, had worked out for the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium two weeks ago, but the two sides did not come to an agreement. As the regular season approaches, talks ramped up. General Manager Steve Keim swapped out veterans, releasing Kevin White earlier Wednesday before bringing Crabtree aboard."

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Finally. This makes a ton of sense and we love this signing. He'll provide a veteran presence and depth behind Larry Fitzgerald.

LAC - RB Melvin Gordon not expected back for Week 1

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon is expected to continue his holdout through the start of the regular season since there has not been any progress made in contract talks, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's time to plan on a long absence for Gordon if you haven't already - maybe as much as eight games or more. Austin Ekeler is going to be a solid RB2 for as long as Gordon is out and Justin Jackson a flex with RB2 upside. Gordon is looking riskier in the third round now and may fall further on draft boards.

OAK - WR Antonio Brown traveling with team

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Scott Bair

Oakland Raiders WR Antonio Brown is traveling with the team to Winnipeg for their preseason game Thursday, Aug. 22. QB Derek Carr said he plans to work with Brown during pregame warmups.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown is catching up after missing most of camp and the preseason. He's a risky pick, but if he's falling to the third the risk is better priced in than earlier in the offseason when he was as high as an early second round pick.

PHI - Richard Rodgers to miss multiple weeks

Philadelphia Eagles TE Richard Rodgers (foot) will be sidelined for several weeks because of a foot injury.

Josh Perkins should be able to comfortably make the team as the third tight end now.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy, RB Frank Gore to see more time

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills RBs LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore will both see more playing time during the third preseason game Friday, Aug. 23.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Devin Singletary has dominated first-team snaps so far, but that was mainly to give the veterans rest time. This still looks like a three-man committee, although that could change if a team has an injury at running back and comes calling for McCoy.

TB - WR Mike Evans out for preseason game

    Source: Buccaneers.com - Scott Smith

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans (leg) won't play in the third preseason game Friday, Aug. 23.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The injury doesn't sound serious, but we should monitor it closely in the week of practice leading up to the season opener against the 49ers, when Evans should see a lot of Richard Sherman.

MIA - WR Jakeem Grant terms

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating previous reports, Miami Dolphins WR Jakeem Grant's four-year deal is worth up to $24 million, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Grant is a good return man with some deep threat speed and slot receiver quicks. This means the new regime really likes him and it could be a bad development for Albert Wilson, who is still not 100%.

WAS - Two WRs may not play Thursday

Source: NBC Sports Washington - JP Finlay

Washington WR Trey Quinn (thumb) will not play in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 22, while WR Paul Richardson (quadriceps) probably will also miss the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Terry McLaurin is the one Washington receiver with no injuries and momentum going into the third preseason game, which is a bad sign for their offense.

DEN - TE Noah Fant on track for Week 1

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Denver Broncos TE Noah Fant (ankle) will be available for Week 1 despite his ankle injury, according to head coach Vic Fangio.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fant was generating some momentum in training camp with better performances, but that is slowed for now. He's more of an upside TE2 to stash in deep or tight end premium leagues than a player to count on for early production. He could be dropped early in the season and come on later as a waiver wire pickup.

    Friday Update

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott wants to be highest-paid RB?

    Source: ESPN - Ed Werder

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott reportedly received a contract extension offer from the team that would make him one of the two highest-paid running backs in the league, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is probably put out there by the team to make their offer look good, but Elliott thinks he deserves more if he didn't accept the deal. The nitty gritty is coming in the next two weeks, we'll see who blinks first. Tony Pollard's value will keep rising in the meantime.

DAL - WR Amari Cooper has intrinsic muscle strain

Source: 105.3 The Fan - Shan Shariff

Updating previous reports, Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper (foot) is dealing with an intrinsic muscle strain in his foot as opposed to plantar fasciitis, according to Mickey Spagnola of the team's website.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Either way, it is something that could be a nagging issue that affects his play, or it could be nothing. It does give you a little pause if you are taking Cooper in the third round and makes Michael Gallup more attractive in the second half of the draft.

SF - TE George Kittle back to work

Source: Bay Area News Group - Cam Inman

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (calf) returned to practice Thursday, Aug. 22, after missing practice last week with a tight calf.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not that we were moving Kittle down our board after this ailment sprang up, but now we can eliminate it from a list of concerns. Kittle has gained value this summer as no 49ers receiver has emerged to Kyle Shanahan's satisfaction. He'll be the rare tight end that is the #1 target in his pass offense.

JAX - QB Nick Foles on same page with WRs

    Source: Jaguars.com

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Nick Foles has reportedly 'shown good chemistry' with WRs Dede Westbrook, Chris Conley and DJ Chark Jr. in practice, according to the team's website.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Foles and company get the Chiefs Week 1, so it could be a hot start for this pass offense. All three receivers and Foles will have low percentage owned GPP appeal in DFS lineups.

HOU - WR Will Fuller leaves practice

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller (knee) left practice early Thursday, Aug. 22, but head coach Bill O'Brien said Fuller is not hurt and that the team is managing his snaps during practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fuller is set up for a hot start with Keke Coutee banged up and more targets likely coming his way against the Saints in Week 1. He's worth his modest (considering his scoring history) ADP.

MIA - RB Kenyan Drake resumes jogging

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake (foot) has reportedly ditched his walking boot and was spotted jogging Thursday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Dolphins will employ some sort of running back by committee this year with Drake and Kalen Ballage, and Drake is the most proven, but perhaps less regarded back. The offensive line and overall team quality might make it hard for either back to sustain production this year.

HOU - WR Keke Coutee still not ready to practice

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee (ankle) remains sidelined with a sprained ankle, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coutee is very questionable for Week 1, which makes Duke Johnson a very intriguing PPR RB2/Flex in the season opener against the Saints and for however long Coutee is out. Coutee had built a lot of momentum this offseason, but couldn't sustain it through the preseason. He's still worth a pick and stash in the second half of PPR drafts.

CHI - WR Anthony Miller could have limited role

Source: Chicago Tribune - Dan Wiederer

Chicago Bears WR Anthony Miller (ankle) could have a limited role in the offense early in the season as he missed most of organized team activities and minicamp to a shoulder injury and most of the preseason with an ankle injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Taylor Gabriel and Javon Wims could see more snaps if Miller brought along slowly and Trey Burton could see more middle of the field targets as long as he is healthy. Miller is still worth a late round stash, but it's a bummer that he's coming into the season banged up after having offseason shoulder surgery to fix a problem that he played with for most of 2018.

    Saturday Update

CAR - QB Cam Newton has mid-foot sprain

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot) was diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain, and the team is cautiously optimistic about his status for Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Newton will face Aaron Donald Week 1 so the team will need to be careful. He should drop on boards to about QB10 with the tightly packed group from 4-10 at the position. There's no need to take on injury risk with similar high ceiling quarterbacks on the board around Newton.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed in concussion protocol

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (concussion) is in the league's concussion protocol after sustaining the injury in a preseason game Thursday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reed has a long concussion history so this is terrible news. The team has Jeremy Sprinkle and Vernon Davis, but this should take him off of our late round tight end target list and could increase the target share for Trey Quinn.

GB - Equanimeous St. Brown has high-ankle sprain

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Updating previous reports, Green Bay Packers WR Equanimeous St. Brown (ankle) is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks with a high-ankle sprain.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

St. Brown was already on the roster bubble. Jake Kumerow is the bench receiver to target here if you want to stash away a Packer.

PIT - WR Diontae Johnson stuck in a holding pattern

    Source: DKPittsburghSports.com - Dale Lolley

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson (undisclosed) has been held out of practice all week due to an undisclosed injury, according to Dale Lolley of DKPittsburghSports.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson has looked promising in camp but snaps will be hard to come by early. He could be a mid-season pickup if Donte Moncrief or James Washington miss any time.

SEA - WR David Moore seeking second opinion

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Seattle Seahawks WR David Moore (shoulder) is in the process of getting a second opinion on his shoulder injury that is not expected to require surgery but cause him to miss at least the first game of the regular season, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jaron Brown will start Week 1 against the Bengals unless DK Metcalf has a very speedy recovery from knee surgery. UDFAs John Ursua and Jazz Ferguson could also get playing time early in the season with fourth-round pick Gary Jennings on the roster bubble.

BAL - WR Marquise Brown buoyed by debut

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jonas Shaffer

Baltimore Ravens Marquise Brown (foot) made his pro debut Thursday, Aug. 22, in a preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, catching all three of his targets for 17 yards, losing four yards o an end-around and catching a two-point conversion pass that was later called back. 'Man, it felt amazing,' he said. 'It's the best day so far. Just being out here -- from pregame to being in the game and being with the team -- it was just a lot of fun.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown is still not ready to make big contributions yet, leaving the door open for fellow rookie Miles Boykin to make a big early impact. We'll keep Brown on our waiver wire watch list.

MIA - QB Josh Rosen plays well

    Source: ESPN.com - Cameron Wolfe

Miami Dolphins QB Josh Rosen completed 5 of 7 passes for 59 yards and ran four times for 23 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rosen is making a push to start Week 1 vs. Baltimore, but behind this offensive line, his 2019 might look a lot like his 2018.

GB - WR Trevor Davis has big night

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers WR Trevor Davis caught five passes for 78 yards and a touchdown against the Oakland Raiders on Thursday, Aug. 22. He also accounted for an 18-yard run as he pushes for one of the remaining receiver spots on the 53-man roster.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis should add speed to the receiver group and could be a name to remember if multiple injuries strike the Packers wide receiver depth chart.

    Source: ESPN.com

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones completed nine of his 11 pass attempts for 141 yards in a 25-23 preseason win over the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

I took Luck to back up Mahomes in my work league draft on Thursday thinking it was a good idea because Luck fell so far in the draft due to his injury history. Good thing I have Mahomes but I have no backup and can't replace Luck until after week 3 because my league has a rule where we have waiver drafts in reverse order of the standings after every 3 weeks so everyone has a fair shot at players. Will be interesting to see how Colts players are treated in the upcoming SBR leagues.

    Sunday Update

IND - QB Andrew Luck planning to retire

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck has informed owner Jim Irsay that he intends to retire, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Absolutely unbelievable. Luck had a calf/ankle issue that has kept him from practicing this offseason. He's mentally done and now walking away from the game. The Colts offense gets downgraded here with Jacoby Brissett taking over as the starter. We could see them lean more on the rushing attack without Luck in the fold. Some truly shocking news for the NFL and Fantasy GMs tonight.

HOU - Possible ACL tear for RB Lamar Miller

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller (knee) may have suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys Saturday, Aug. 24, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for Miller and the Texans here. Duke Johnson is the next in line on the depth chart but the team might want to keep him more as a change-of-pace back. We'll see if they make a move for a free agent back or perhaps trade with another team to add depth at the position.

CAR - QB Cam Newton to practice this week

Source: NFL Network - Tiffany Blackmon

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot) is dealing with a sore foot but will participate in practice this week in preparation for Week 1, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Newton has been ruled out for the final preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reports are saying mild foot sprain for Newton, and his practice status is not guaranteed. We'll see if Newton can be ready for the start of the regular season. The Panthers are hopeful their star quarterback will be ready.

DAL - Dallas optimistic that RB Ezekiel Elliott deal can be finalized

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones believes a contract extension with RB Ezekiel Elliott will be finalized before the regular-season opener Sept. 8, although he doesn't think a deal will happen in the next few days because there hasn't been much recent activity.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Earlier this week, ESPN's Ed Werder (so good to see him back with the four-letter network), reported the Cowboys had offered Elliott a contract that would make him the second-highest paid running back in the league behind Todd Gurley. We'll need to see more in order to get this deal done. Right now, Fantasy GMs are still drafting Elliott as a top-10 pick. If he was not holding out, Elliott would easily be a top-four selection.

MIN - RB Dalvin Cook finds end zone

    Source: NFL.com

Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook rushed for 88 yards and one touchdown on two carries in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 24.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cook didn't need much time to showcase his playmaking ability. Fantasy GMs are taking Cook off the board at RB10 (2.06) in 12-team PPR leagues. He might come off the board a bit higher after this most recent performance.

MIN - QB Kirk Cousins struggles

    Source: NFL.com

Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins went 3-for-13 for 35 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 24.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cousins has been fine in the preseason so far but he was bad on Saturday. The Vikings are going to run the ball early and often under OC Kevin Stefanski in 2019, so don't expect Cousins to fill the air with footballs. He's a QB2 for Fantasy GMs this season.

ARI - Seven catches for WR KeeSean Johnson

    Source: NFL.com

Arizona Cardinals WR KeeSean Johnson caught seven passes for 85 yards in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 24.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like the 2019 sixth-round pick out of Fresno State. Johnson has a good size/strength combination and if he cleans up his routes then the Cardinals could eventually have a quality starter. We recommend adding him or at least monitoring the young receiver in dynasty formats.

ARI - QB Kyler Murray has solid game

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray went 14-for-21 for 137 yards in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 24. He also rushed for nine yards on four carries during the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray's ADP has taken a bit of a dip recently, but this performance could get him back into the top-10. The rookie has top-10 upside but Fantasy GMs are not going to get much value with picking him at QB12 (10.01) in 12-team PPR leagues. That Arizona offensive line is a concern, but at least Murray is athletic enough to run around and make plays.

NE - TE Lance Kendricks to miss Week 1

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New England Patriots TE Lance Kendricks has been suspended by the NFL for the first game of the 2019 regular season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kendricks gets popped for one game, joining Ben Watson (suspended four games to start this year) as a suspended tight end for the Patriots. Matt LaCosse has the position mostly all to himself during Week 1 and perhaps the first month of the season if he impresses.

DET - RB Ty Johnson gets some red-zone work

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Ty Johnson had four carries for nine yards and caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from QB Matthew Stafford against the Buffalo Bills on Friday, Aug. 23. Johnson has earned a shot with the first-team offense, according to the Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett, who notes Johnson has more speed than the team's other backs and could be a contributor on offense this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The receiving touchdown is helpful for Johnson as he wasn't used that often as a pass-catching threat in college at Maryland. The 2019 sixth-round pick is looking for a spot on the 53-man roster behind Kerryon Johnson, C.J. Anderson and Zach Zenner. In order to make the team, the rookie will have to stand out on special teams.

TB - QB Jameis Winston to sit out finale

Source: The Athletic - Greg Auman

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston will not play in the preseason finale against the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, Aug. 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Most every team is going to rest their starters in the preseason finale, so this news about Winston is zero surprise. He's getting drafted as a high-end QB2 (QB13, 10.03) but that Bucs offensive line makes him a risky pick. The upside is there because of his talent, the weapons around him and Bruce Arians running the show on offense. However, Winston is not without risk in this make-or-break season. Make sure to have a good combination of quarterbacks if you get Winston on your roster.

TB - QB Blaine Gabbert dislocates shoulder

    Source: ESPN.com - Jenna Laine

Updating an ongoing story, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Blaine Gabbert (shoulder) suffered a dislocated left shoulder Friday, Aug. 23, according to head coach Bruce Arians, but it is still unclear if Gabbert will need surgery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's Gabbert's non-throwing shoulder so that is a bit of bad news. We should know if he needs surgery or not in the near future. Pocket passer and perennial backup Ryan Griffin could open the season as the No. 2 quarterback for the Bucs behind starter Jameis Winston.

    LeSean McCoy to the Chiefs

News from overnight you need to know about. Running back LeSean McCoy is now a Kansas City Chief.

From ESPN's Adam Schefter: "Former Bills’ RB LeSean McCoy is reuniting with Chiefs HC Andy Reid, per source. McCoy getting a one-year, $4 million deal that includes $3 million guaranteed from the Chiefs."

I love this move. It makes sense for Andy Reid and McCoy as they have a history and they both know what they're getting.

I'm sure McCoy sees this as a great shot to win a ring and Kansas City adds a veteran piece as they make a run.

How the team spreads the workload will of course be the thing to figure out. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see McCoy have one last chance to be the lead back. But we expect to see a lot of Damien Williams too. It'll likely be a lot of both as the season starts and the team gets a feel for what they have. And Darwin Thompson will have a role as well. Which could translate to this being an excellent situation for Kansas City fans cheering for real football but frustrating for Fantasy GMs trying to determine who'll get the running back work.

I can envision McCoy taking the lead role here but it's not clear yet how it'll play out.

Bottom line, we see this as a very good thing for LeSean McCoy and Kansas City. It's a negative bump for Damien Williams and Darwin Williams from the angle of losing playing time.

    Have a great Sunday.

    Sunday Update

HOU - WR Kenny Stills, Laremy Tunsil joining Texans

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport, Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills and OT Laremy Tunsil were acquired by the Houston Texans Saturday, Aug. 31, in exchange for two first-round draft choices, a second-round draft choice, CB Johnson Bademosi and OT Julie'n Davenport, according to sources. The Texans will also receive a fourth-round draft choice in the trade.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a huge win for the Texans as Tunsil will shore up their offensive line as a blind-side protector for Deshaun Watson. Stills gives the team better veteran depth at the wide receiver position. With Keke Coutee banged up...again...the Texans can plug Stills into the No. 3 wide receiver role behind DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott talks heating up

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott's contract talks are intensifying with both sides looking to strike a deal this weekend, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Deals get done at deadlines in the NFL. With the regular season fast approaching, the Cowboys may be more inclined to get Elliott in the fold. Stay tuned.

    Source: Patriots.com

New England Patriots WR Demaryius Thomas was released Saturday, Aug. 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas had a monster game in the Patriots preseason finale but it wasn't enough to get him on the 53-man roster. This could have been a cost-cutting move by the Patriots as they save around $2.7 million on the cap with this transaction.

LAC - RB Melvin Gordon can seek trade

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon has been granted permission to seek a trade, according to sources. He'll explore his options, which could include returning.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see if something can get worked out before the start of the regular season next week. Gordon reportedly had an offer from the Chargers that would pay him around $10 million annually but is looking for more. We'll see if the Chargers can find a trade partner, actually work something out with Gordon, or just sign LeSean McCoy in free agency and call it good.

HOU - Houston adds RB Carlos Hyde

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Kansas City Chiefs RB Carlos Hyde was acquired by the Houston Texans Saturday, Aug. 31, in exchange for OT Martinas Rankin.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hyde wasn't going to make the Chiefs final roster, largely due to the emergence of guys like Darwin Thompson. The Texans need running back help after losing Lamar Miller for the season with a knee injury. Hyde will compete for snaps/touches behind starter Duke Johnson Jr.

NYG - WR Golden Tate on suspended list

New York Giants WR Golden Tate was placed on the Reserve/Suspended list Saturday, Aug. 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tate took a banned fertility substance and was suspended four games by the NFL. That suspension begins now that teams are in regular season mode.

TB - RB Andre Ellington released

Source: The Athletic - Greg Auman

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Andre Ellington was released Saturday, Aug. 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ellington had experience under Bruce Arians from their days in Arizona, but that wasn't enough for him to make the 53-man roster. The Bucs have seen Dare Ogunbowale emerge in that change-of-pace role, and Ogunbowale is an explosive player we're watching closely in deep dynasty formats.

Seattle Seahawks RB J.D. McKissic was released Saturday, Aug. 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McKissic was mainly a receiving back for the Seahawks. With him gone, expect more work in the passing game for guys like Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny.

CIN - WR A.J. Green avoids IR

    Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green (ankle) won't be placed on the Reserve/Injured-Return list as the team feels he'll be back before the first eight weeks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Green had a 6-8 week timetable when he first had ankle surgery last month. The team feels confident he's on track for that, which could put Green back in the lineup around Week 3 or Week 4. Tyler Boyd should get a ton of work in Green's absence.

CLE - Cleveland acquired WR Taywan Taylor

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Taywan Taylor was acquired by the Cleveland Browns Saturday, Aug. 31, in exchange for a 2020 draft choice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Taylor gets a fresh start with the Browns now. He caught 37 passes for the Titans last year but never quite played up to his potential. Taylor can play outside or in the slot for the Browns in 2019.

PHI - RB Wendell Smallwood waived

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Philadelphia Eagles RB Wendell Smallwood was waived Saturday, Aug. 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles backfield was cramped this offseason and that's why they let go of Smallwood and Josh Adams on Saturday. A fifth-round pick out of West Virginia in the 2016 NFL draft, Smallwood might latch on with a new team in need of a pass-catching back.

CIN - QB Jeff Driskel placed on IR

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Cincinnati Bengals QB Jeff Driskel (hamstring) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Aug. 31, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Driskel has some talent but he gets banged up quite a bit. The Bengals will now have rookie Ryan Finley as the No. 2 quarterback behind Andy Dalton in 2019.

DEN - Kevin Hogan let go

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Denver Broncos QB Kevin Hogan was released Saturday, Aug. 31, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hogan was largely unimpressive during the preseason and training camp. He was on his way out the door when rookie second-round pick Drew Lock took over as the No. 2 quarterback...then Lock was hurt in the preseason with a thumb injury. That opened a door for Hogan over the final two preseason games but he couldn't do enough to earn a roster spot.

SF - WR Jordan Matthews does not make team

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

San Francisco 49ers WR Jordan Matthews was released Saturday, Aug. 31, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matthews spent a majority of the preseason working as the first-team slot receiver. With Trent Taylor banged up, the thought was that Matthews could at least keep the seat warm while Taylor healed. Now, Matthews will try to get a new home with a declining skill set.

LAC - QB Cardale Jones released

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Los Angeles Chargers QB Cardale Jones was released Saturday, Aug. 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chargers have Tyrod Taylor as the backup to Philip Rivers. Rookie Easton Stick hangs around as a No. 3/developmental quarterback. Jones has a big arm but struggles with consistency as a passer. We'll see if Jones can latch on with a new team.

PHI - RB Josh Adams waived

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

Philadelphia Eagles RB Josh Adams was waived Saturday, Aug. 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles have a cramped backfield with Jordan Howard as the lead back and rookie Miles Sanders in the mix. Adams had 511 yards last year as an undrafted rookie and might latch on with a new team in search of a power back.

HOU - WR Will Fuller ready for Week 1

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller (knee) is ready to go for Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fuller is coming off a torn ACL that he suffered in Week 8 last year. It's great news for the Texans passing game as Fuller should be able to take advantage of single coverage with DeAndre Hopkins getting so much attention from the defense on the other side of the field. Fuller is easily a flex play with WR2 upside.

SEA - QB Geno Smith the backup in Seattle

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith will serve as the backup quarterback this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith beat out 2016 first-round pick (Broncos) Paxton Lynch. Even with a minor knee issue in the preseason, Smith did enough to earn the No. 2 job behind Russell Wilson. Perhaps Lynch can stay on the team's practice squad.

DAL - WR Amari Cooper to return to practice

Source: The Athletic - Jon Machota

Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper (heel) is expected to return to practice next week, owner Jerry Jones said Friday, Aug. 30.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the expected path for Cooper. He's missed time in training camp and the preseason with the team planning to have him back at the start of the regular season. Cooper is a WR1 for Fantasy GMs in 2019.

Chargers gave Gordon permission to seek a trade. There is no way in hell any team is going to pay him $15 million+ AND give up something of value to trade for him. He just isn't worth it. I have a feeling Gordon and his agent will find out quickly that there is little to no interest for their ridiculous demands and he will be forced to crawl back to the Chargers with his tail between his legs.
