NFL Player News - Week of 4/29/19

NYG - GM defends Daniel Jones pick
    Source: SI.com - Jenny Vrentas
New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman has further defended his pick of QB Daniel Jones with the draft's sixth-overall selection, saying that he knew there were two other teams who would've drafted Jones before the Giants' second first-round pick at No. 17 overall.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Giants had two first-round picks and most felt they would get a quarterback with one of those selections. They felt like Jones wouldn't be there when they picked no.17 overall, so they took him at no.6 instead. He's not Peyton Manning (or Eli Manning) but he is smart and athletic. Jones will be groomed as their quarterback of the future.

CLE - Coach has plans for RB Duke Johnson
    Source: NFL.com - Jeremy Bergman
Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson remains with the team despite his desire to be traded, and coach Freddie Kitchens said Saturday, April 27, that's fine with him. 'Duke is under contract. I have said this for like a month now, I don't know where all this trade talk started happening,' Kitchens said. 'People just assumed that we are going to trade him because we signed another good football player. Me, personally, I like good football players and I like as many of them as we can get. Duke Johnson is on this football team, Duke Johnson will have a vital role in this football team and Duke Johnson will help us win football games. Am I surprised that he's still here? No, not one bit. I haven't wavered and never said anything different other than that.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Browns should use Johnson as a receiver out of the backfield and a change-of-pace back behind starter Nick Chubb. However, when Kareem Hunt is activated after his eight-game suspension then Johnson's snap count should be severely limited. We'll see if they actually use him properly or decide to trade him away at some point in the future.

DAL - Dallas has big plans for Tony Pollard
    Source: DallasCowboys.com - Rob Phillips
Dallas Cowboys fourth-round RB Tony Pollard is expected to play an important role on offense and special teams right away, according to chief operating officer Stephen Jones.'It's a little unfair - he's certainly not at that level, don't get me wrong - but a little (Alvin) Kamara to him, as to how he (complemented Mark) Ingram down in New Orleans. He can play flyer on special teams, he can return kicks; he can do all that. But what excites me the most is his home run threat as a running back. He can get in there and take some of the snaps off Zeke, which I think Zeke needs at times, and when he walks in there, he's going to be a problem when defenses are looking at him. He's a sub-4.40 guy,' Jones said.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Cowboys offense is moving into the 21st century, with some versatility and speed from Pollard. He's an intriguing long term deep dynasty prospect, but the Cowboys aren't going to switch to a two-back attack.

PIT - Diontae Johnson to move around
    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson is 'naturally gifted' and can line up anywhere on the field, according to wide receivers coach Darryl Drake.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Johnson is a big play waiting to happen. He had touchdowns of 80 (receiving), 83 (punt return) and 98 (kick return) in 2018. Johnson is going to compete for a spot on the depth chart behind JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington. He reminds some in the scouting community of Emmanuel Sanders and is certainly a player we'll love to take super late in drafts if he flashes in the preseason.

KC - Darwin Thompson hard to bring down in college
    Source: Chiefs.com - B.J. Kissel
Kansas City Chiefs sixth-round RB Darwin Thompson averaged 0.32 forced missed tackles per attempt and 5.1 yards after contact per attempt in 2018 while playing at Utah State, ranking inside the top five in both categories, according to Pro Football Focus via B.J. Kissel of Chiefs.com.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Scouts have described Thompson as 'Tarik Cohen like' and that's awful exciting when placed in the Chiefs high-powered offense. Thompson did not play special teams at Utah State and that's his likely ticket to the 53-man roster. He's a balanced runner at 200 pounds and does not shy away from running inside. We'll keep an eye on him in super deep dynasty formats.

CAR - WR D.J. Moore switches agents
Source: Sports Business Journal - Liz Mullen
Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore announced Sunday, April 28, he has switched agents and will now be represented by Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Moore had a standout season with the Panthers as a rookie in 2018. He finished the year with 55 catches for 788 yards and two touchdowns. A first-round pick for the Panthers in 2018, the team has him under contract through 2022 if they choose to use the fifth-year option. Moore could flirt with WR2 level production in 2019.

NYJ - Jalin Moore signs with Jets
Source: Watauga Democrat - Steve Behr
Undrafted free-agent RB Jalin Moore (Appalachian State) signed an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Sunday, April 28.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Moore is a well put together running back, measuring in at 5'10" 212 pounds. He has a physical side to his game with a lunch pail attitude when he totes the rock. Moore has straight-line speed but needs to be more fluid when changing direction. With limited experience as a pass-catcher, Moore may have a tough time cracking the 53-man roster. The Jets have a jam-packed backfield with Le'Veon Bell, Eli McGuire, Trenton Cannon, DeAngelo Henderson and Ty Montgomery all vying for various levels of playing time in 2019.

IND - Indianapolis interested in QB Chad Kelly?
    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio
The Indianapolis Colts met with free-agent QB Chad Kelly (Broncos) several weeks ago but the team has not decided whether to sign him, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Kelly's uncle Jim is tight with Colts head coach Frank Reich. It's time for the Colts to make backup quarterback plans for next year, when Jacoby Brissett will likely sign a big deal to compete to start somewhere. Kelly could work if he keeps on the straight and narrow.

DET - Donald Parham to the Motor City
Source: The Athletic - Greg Auman
Undrafted free agent TE Donald Parham (Stetson) signed with the Detroit Lions on Saturday, April 27.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Parham is 6'8" and he moves well. He can play the Noah Fant to first-round pick TJ Hockenson if he develops in time.

MIA - Preston Williams joins the Fins
Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport
Undrafted free agent WR Preston Williams (Colorado State) signed with the Miami Dolphins on Saturday, April 27, according to a source.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Williams is talented but has some off field concerns and tested poorly at his pro day, but he couldn't have more opportunity short and long term. This is a great landing spot for him.

    Tuesday Update

SEA - No news expected soon on WR Doug Baldwin

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin (hernia, knee, shoulder) may not be able to play in the NFL again because of his multiple injuries, but NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Monday, April 29, that a retirement announcement should not be expected 'anytime soon' due to salary cap reasons. However, Garafolo believes the 'likelihood' is still that Baldwin will not play again.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Baldwin's injuries have caught up to him. The Seahawks selected three wide receivers in the 2019 NFL draft likely anticipating that Baldwin would retire.

DEN - Drew Lock to compete for backup role

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock will 'compete for the backup role' and learn from QB Joe Flaccoin 2019, according to general manager John Elway.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Broncos have Kevin Hogan and Garrett Grayson on the roster at quarterback position behind starter Joe Flacco. There is no question that Flacco is the 'understood' starter and Lock, if he wins the no.2 job, will just have to wait for his opportunity. In addition to adding Lock in the second round, the Broncos also picked up Brett Rypien as a priority free agent after the draft.

PHI - QB Carson Wentz's optioned picked up

    Source: PhiladelphiaEagles.com

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz's fifth-year option was exercised Monday, April 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This puts Wentz on the board for around $22 million in 2020. We should see him extended by the team before that new league year begins. It all comes down to whether or not Wentz can stay healthy this season. Wentz has a ton of talent but hasn't played a full 16-game season since his rookie year in 2016.

PHI - GM talks up Miles Sanders

Source: NBC Sports Philadelphia - Reuben Frank

Philadelphia Eagles RB Miles Sanders was drafted in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and GM Howie Roseman said during a post-draft presser that Philadelphia has 'been looking for a runner like Miles for a few years.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanders is one of the more interesting running back prospects in the 2019 NFL draft. He had to wait his turn at Penn State behind some guy named Saquon Barkley, but Sanders got his chance to shine in 2018. He's patient as a runner and does a good job of creating his own space. Sanders has some physicality to his game but lacks home-run speed. We'll see if the rookie can carve out a role in a backfield that has guys like Jordan Howard and Josh Adams (to name two).

NE - TE Jacob Hollister shipped to Seattle

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

New England Patriots TE Jacob Hollister was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a 2020 seventh-round draft pick Monday, April 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots picked up Hollister out of Wyoming a couple of years ago. He didn't get much playing time during his time with the Patriots and the team decided to move on from him. They've added Matt LaCosse and Austin Seferian-Jenkins earlier this offseason. We'll see who ends up at the top of the depth chart in training camp as the team tries to find their Rob Gronkowski replacement.

    DET - T.J. Hockenson likely a co-starter

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke

Detroit Lions TE T.J. Hockenson is likely to be a co-starter in Week 1 with TE Jesse James, in the opinion of beat writer Kyle Meinke

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

You don't spend a top-10 pick on a player to have him co-starting but that might be the case with Hockenson. James might be the team's blocking tight end with Hockenson working as the receiving threat (even though he's a devastating blocker). We're excited to see Hockenson play in the pros, especially if he can play up to the comparisons (Travis Kelce, Rob Gronkowski) that were thrown around about him before the 2019 NFL draft.

ARI - KeeSean Johnson praised for route running

Source: Arizona Sports 98.7 FM - Kevin Zimmerman

Arizona Cardinals WR KeeSean Johnson was praised for his route running by Cardinals general manager Steve Keim. 'The one thing that jumped out at me about this young man as I watched the tape, he's one of the better natural route runners I saw in this draft process,' Keim said. 'I'm talking about a guy who can drop his weight, who's really good getting in and out of routes, is extremely smooth. His positional versatility and his playmaking ability jumped off the tape for us.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson's route running has always been known as a positive. He may not be fast enough to play on the outside, and some scouts believe Johnson may not be quick enough to play on the inside. We like him in deep dynasty because of his route running and ball skills.

    Wednesday Update

ATL - Protecting QB Matt Ryan a priority

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan was sacked or hit a career-high 76 times last season, so the Falcons made his protection a draft priority, selecting a pair of offensive linemen in the first round. 'We knew what we needed to do this offseason and that was to continue to fortify that line and make sure that we were protecting Matt,' Atlanta GM Thomas Dimitroff said. 'And we weren't going to run into what we ran into last year.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Falcons have a high-powered offense with weapons all over the place. So long as Ryan stays upright, he should produce top-5 fantasy quarterback numbers in 2019. The Falcons made the moves in the draft to help out his protection, something that should pay early dividends this season.

IND - RB Spencer Ware signs with Colts

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent RB Spencer Ware (Chiefs) signed an undisclosed deal with the Indianapolis Colts Tuesday, April 30.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Colts cramped backfield gets quite a bit more crowded here. Ware is good when healthy, and he can work as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. He's going to try and find a spot in the mix with guys like Marlon Mack, Jordan Wilkins, Nyheim Hines and Jonathan Williams.

LAC - RB Melvin Gordon not at workout

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon did not participate in the voluntary workout Monday, April 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon is looking for a new deal and that may be why he's staying away during voluntary workouts. The 2015 first-round pick is due $5.6 million in 2019, the final year of his rookie deal. The Chargers were looking into an extension, so we may see something done before the start of the regular season. Stay tuned.

MIA - QB Josh Rosen thinks he can be franchise QB

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins QB Josh Rosen said he believes he can be a franchise quarterback for the Dolphins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It would be news if he felt any differently. Rosen looked lost for the Cardinals last year, but one could easily blame that on coaching, lack of talent around him or an offensive line that let him get beat up quite a bit. Struggles as a rookie quarterback in the NFL should be expected, and Rosen wasn't a good fit for the 'Air Raid' system that new Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury is bringing to Arizona. Rosen gets a fresh start with the Dolphins and has a chance to showcase his talent as the starter if he can beat out Ryan Fitzpatrick.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles retiring

    Source: 610SportsKC

Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Jaguars) will sign a one-day contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

When he was at his best, Charles was one of the best in the league and a favorite of Fantasy GMs everywhere. A third-round pick out of Texas in the 2008 NFL draft, Charles was a top-12 fantasy running back in five of his first seven years in the league. Knee injuries robbed him of his trademark speed and he didn't look the same since 2014. Stints with Denver and Jacksonville will not be remembered, but his time with the Chiefs was epic.

SF - Jalen Hurd's versatility praised

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

San Francisco 49ers WR Jalen Hurd is the most versatile player he's ever drafted, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Hurd was chosen in the third round and could play all over the field, including running back, wide receiver and tight end. Hurd played at 250 pounds when Tennessee asked him to line up in short-yardage rushing situations, and he shed 20 pounds to play wide receiver for Baylor. Hurd weighed 226 pounds at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine, but general manager John Lynch said Hurd will be allowed to play at the weight he feels most comfortable before the coaching staff determines his ultimate positional role.'He can do about everything,' Shanahan said. 'I think if he would have stayed a running back, I think he would have gotten drafted as an NFL running back. Today he got drafted as an NFL receiver, kind of. I believe if he tried to play tight end he would have gotten drafted as an NFL tight end. That's a pretty unique thing to have. I don't remember being able to say that about any player I've studied before. So, it's neat to be able to do that and he can help us out in a lot of different ways.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hurd has an amazing size/speed combination he can use to dominate smaller defenders. He wasn't asked to run the full route tree in college and Hurd will need to learn how to quickly and properly beat press coverage as a pro. If he learns those skill sets, watch out! This third-round pick is one we're excited about in dynasty formats.

LAR - More two-back formations for Rams in 2019?

    Source: ESPN.com - Lindsey Thiry

Los Angeles Rams third-round RB Darrell Henderson's arrival may prompt the team to use fewer 11-personnel (three receivers, one running back and one tight end) and possibly utilize two running backs more often going forward, in the opinion of ESPN's Lindsey Thiry.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We really like Henderson's skill set but his landing spot should prevent him from playing up to his potential. Henderson is going to try and find a role with the Rams as the no.3 running back on the depth chart behind superstar Todd Gurley and primary backup Malcolm Brown. Add in second-year pro John Kelly as more competition for Henderson in 2019. We'll see how it all shakes out and will have a better feel for Henderson's situation in training camp and the preseason.

IND - Indy landing Parris Campbell "not fair"

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Indianapolis Colts second-round WR Parris Campbell was the only non-defensive player selected by the team during the 2019 NFL Draft, and it appears as if head coach Frank Reich is quite pleased with what he believes Campbell will break the offense.'It's funny, I have said this to you guys before, but as a coach you ... love the guys you work with that I always think, 'Hey, we don't need anybody else. We already got the best guys in the world playing for us. And, then all of a sudden, now you're giving us more? This isn't fair. It's not going to be fair. And then you get a guy that runs 4.31 and you just say, 'It's going to be fun to see these guys work together,'' Reich told the team's website.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a 'good get' for the Colts offense that's for sure. Campbell is a big play waiting to happen. He's got quickness, speed and moves upon moves in the open field with the rock in his hands. Campbell has the skill set where he can take a short pass and turn it into a house call. We're excited to see where Campbell mixes into the Colts passing game behind T.Y. Hilton.

IND - WR T.Y. Hilton foresees big season for offense

Source: The Herald Bulletin - George Bremer

Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton has high hopes for the team's offense in 2019. 'This offense is going to be scary,' Hilton said Tuesday, April 30.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Andrew Luck healthy in 2018, Hilton finished as the no.14 fantasy receiver in standard-scoring leagues. We should see him around that same number, perhaps pushing into mid-range WR1 territory in 2019. The weapons added by the Colts this offseason could really help the type of coverage Hilton regularly sees, thus opening him up to do more and be even more dangerous this season.

KC - GM expects Mecole Hardman to play early

Source: The Kansas City Star - Brooke Pryor
Kansas City Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman probably will receive a solid amount of playing time during the early part of the 2019 season, in the opinion of general manager Brett Veach.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hardman is going to get a lot of playing time, especially if the team moves on from Tyreek Hill (or if he's suspended by the league). He could certainly be a player that Fantasy GMs get excited about in 2019. The rookie from Georgia is currently going undrafted in 12-team PPR leagues but that's going to change.

    Thursday Update

OAK - RB Isaiah Crowell out for season

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Oakland Raiders RB Isaiah Crowell (Achilles') suffered a torn Achilles' in a workout Tuesday, April 30, and is out for the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for Crowell as he just signed a one-year deal with the Raiders about a month ago. He's going to be 27-years old next year and coming off a major injury, so the market shouldn't be too hot for his services. The Raiders move forward with 2019 first-round pick Josh Jacobs as their lead back.

OAK - RB Doug Martin returning to Oakland

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo and Steve Wyche

Free-agent RB Doug Martin (Raiders) agreed to terms with the Oakland Raiders Wednesday, May 1, according to sources. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders had to make a move with Isaiah Crowell lost for the season. Martin was with the team last year and is not quite the same player he used to be but he did have 723 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns in 2018. Rookie first-round pick Josh Jacobs should be the lead back for the Raiders with guys like Martin, Jalen Richard, DeAndre Washington and Chris Warren III competing for backup touches and snaps.

Retired RB Marshawn Lynch is willing to play for the Oakland Raiders if they want to sign him, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Of course he is. We'd love it if Lynch came back, and the Raiders may want to consider it now that Isaiah Crowell has been lost for the season. They did sign Doug Martin on Wednesday, so Lynch will likely have to wait.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson's option to be declined

Source: NBC Sports Washington - Ben Standig and JP Finlay

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson has been informed that his fifth-year option will not be exercised this offseason, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Doctson has struggled to stay healthy and impress during his pro career. He had his best season in the NFL last year, snaring 44 catches for 532 receiving yards. Doctson is not the type of dominant playmaker he was in college at TCU (the reason why Washington made him a first-round pick). He's set to be a free agent in 2020.

MIN - TE Kyle Rudolph could remain a factor

    Source: ESPN.com - Courtney Cronin

Minnesota Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph could remain a factor in the offense after the team selected TE Irv Smith with the 50th selection in the NFL draft. Last season, the team ran 20 percent of its plays out of 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends, two receivers), and the team thrived in it. QB Kirk Cousins had a 120.8 passer rating, and the team rushed for 4.2 yards per carry. Rudolph had 13.8 percent of Cousins' targets last year while notching 64 receptions for 634 yards (9.9 yards per catch) and four touchdowns.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Vikings did field calls to trade Rudolph during the 2019 NFL draft but no deal came to fruition. Rudolph is in the final year of his contract and can still be a pass-catching threat for the Vikings offense. Tight end can be a brutal position for Fantasy GMs, and Rudolph does have TE1 upside even with a limited role. He's been a top-10 fantasy tight end over the last three seasons and has a current ADP of TE8 (7.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

MIN - Irv Smith Jr. draws favorable comp

    Source: ESPN.com - Courtney Cronin

Minnesota Vikings second-round TE Irv Smith Jr. was drafted in part because the team believes the new offense under offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski and assistant head coach/offensive advisor Gary Kubiak will be similar to what QB Kirk Cousins ran while he was a member of the Washington Redskins. Cousins leaned heavily on Jordan Reed during his time there, and general manager Rick Spielman believes Smith share more than just a few similarities.'That type of tight end we haven't had here, and I know that's a big part of Kubiak's and Stefanski's offense right now. The other thing I thought was, don't want to put (Smith) there yet, but he has a lot of (Jordan) Reed-like traits in Washington, and that's why he was very appealing to us,' Spielman told ESPN's Courtney Cronin.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't think he's quite as athletic as Reed, but comparing Smith to Delanie Walker makes sense. Smith is a good player and the Vikings got him as a value pick in the second round of the draft. We'll see how he mixes in with veteran TE Kyle Rudolph in 2019.

LAC - QB Philip Rivers extension unlikely to come soon

    Source: NFL.com - Herbie Teope

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers is entering the final year of his contract, but general manager Tom Telesco said during a recent appearance on NFL Network there is no set schedule in terms of when extension talks will begin with Rivers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This deal is going to get sometime and it doesn't have to be anytime soon. The Chargers want to find a way to keep their franchise quarterback around, and they'll open up the checkbook to do that at some point. Rivers is in the final year of his contract with a cap hit of $23 million in 2019.

I would not give Melvin gordon a big contract, he is injured too often.

Always thought Crowell could be a top 10 back. He showed flashes but never sustained it.

    Could be done now.

Only a select few can sustain the Requirements to be and NFL RB

    Friday Update

KC - Tyreek's Hill's lawyer shifts abuse claims

    Source: ESPN

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill's lawyer has issued a denial in letter form of the child-abuse allegations made against Hill in a recent audio recording. N. Trey Pettlo's four-page letter, which was sent to the NFL on Thursday, May 2, also accuses Hill's fiancee, Crystal Espinal, of inflicting some the abuse to the couple's 3-year-old son that has been attributed to Hill.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pettlon said Hill is willing to meet with NFL investigators and will cooperate with the investigation 'to the extent that he can under the law.' Hill has been suspended from all team activities while this investigation sorts itself out. There is a chance that he is released from the team, but nobody knows if that's going to be the case at this time. There are also people who feel he'll be suspended but not for the entire year. Stay tuned as this one is a moving situation right now.

ARI - Kyler Murray to start opener

Source: NFL Network - Rich Eisen

Arizona Cardinals first-round QB Kyler Murray will be the team's Week 1 starter against the Detroit Lions, according to general manager Steve Keim.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Just like everyone expected. The Cardinals made Murray the no.1 overall pick because of his fit in the 'Air Raid' system that new head coach Kliff Kingsbury is bringing to the desert. Fantasy GMs might want to take a flier on Murray as a QB2 with upside as rushing quarterbacks like Murray always have more value even if they're somewhat limited as a passer (see QB1 Tim Tebow).

KC - Darwin Thompson set to be "change-of-pace" RB

Source: The Kansas City Star - Brooke Pryor

Kansas City Chiefs sixth-round RB Darwin Thompson is expected to serve as a change-of-pace back for the team, according to Chiefs national scout Trey Koziol.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thompson was a JUCO star before transferring and starting for one season at Utah State. He's 5'8" 200 pounds but can make his living between the tackles with a blue collar work ethic. Thompson is determined as a runner and has the footwork to make defenders miss in small areas. He should be able to develop into a better receiving option out of the backfield, but Thompson doesn't have the speed to pull away from linebackers in coverage.

MIN - Minnesota, Irv Smith agree to deal

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Minnesota Vikings second-round TE Irv Smith agreed to terms on a four-year contract Thursday, May 2. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That was quick. Smith is a good 'Y' tight end who some in the scouting community think has some Delanie Walker to his game. He's a good blocker and a capable receiver who can line up in-line, out wide or from the slot. We'll see how Smith works into the mix with veteran Kyle Rudolph still there.

NE - RB James White eyes further improvement

    Source: NESN.com - Zack Cox

New England Patriots RB James White is focused on improving his game, he said Thursday, May 2. 'Even though you have some success, there's still plenty of mistakes that you make out there,' White said. 'So there's always room for improvement, always ways to get better, always more yards to get. So you get in with the coaches, see what you can improve and find ways to get better. Whether it's running better routes, having no drops or having better run reads, there's always a little bit of things you can improve on.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

White has been a fine weapon for the Patriots offense for years...and he's a favorite of Tom Brady. Fantasy GMs know he is a good play in PPR leagues because of his pass-catching ability. Last year, White finished as a top-12 fantasy running back in PPR leagues and should finish around the same spot this year.

SF - WR Jordan Matthews on the bubble?

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers WR Jordan Matthews is on the bubble following the team's selections of WRs Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, who also mentions WR Richie James and possibly WR Kendrick Bourne as players whose spots are not guaranteed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. The 49ers added quality talent to their WR corps in the 2019 NFL draft, and that may push a guy like Matthews off the roster.

ARI - TE Maxx Williams headed to the desert

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Free-agent TE Maxx Williams (Ravens) signed an undisclosed contract with the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday, May 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams failed to live up to his potential with the Ravens, having his career knocked off track by injury and inconsistency. He's big and athletic, so the skill set is still there for him to be a decent pro. We'll see if the fresh start in Arizona helps Williams.

OAK - Foster Moreau inks four-year pact

Source: The Athletic - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders fourth-round TE Foster Moreau agreed to terms on a four-year contract Thursday, May 2. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moreau is a player we'll add in deep dynasty. He showed sneaky athleticism at the Senior Bowl earlier this year and might have his best football still in front of him.

DET - RB Kerryon Johnson ran into rookie wall

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson said he hit the proverbial rookie wall early in the 2018 season. 'Rookie wall hit me in like, fall, bro,' Johnson said Thursday, May 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Lions are hoping to get a full season out of Johnson this year. He's talented and doesn't need to come off the field on third downs. The Lions do have quality veteran depth behind him as they added C.J. Anderson this offseason. If Johnson gets banged up or fails to impress, Anderson is proven and can take over in that backfield.

    TB - Bruce Anderson praised

Source: The Athletic - Greg Auman

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bruce Anderson, who was picked up as an undrafted free agent, was praised by running backs coach Todd McNair for his pass protection and pass-catching skills.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Anderson was a stud all-purpose back in college at North Dakota State. A nagging hamstring injury kept him from participating in the Reese's Senior Bowl earlier this year and Anderson was not invited to the Scouting Combine. We like his skill set and will be monitoring him but only in super deep dynasty formats.

    Saturday Update

OAK - RB Isaiah Crowell placed on IR

    Source: Raiders.com

Oakland Raiders RB Isaiah Crowell (Achilles) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Friday, May 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Crowell only signed a one-year deal with the Raiders just a little over a month ago. He'll hit the open market next offseason coming off a major injury and might struggle to garner interest.

NYG - Daniel Jones seeking team success

    Source: Newsday - Tom Rock

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones said Friday, May 3, he has spoken once with QB Eli Manningsince he was drafted April 25, and is looking forward to further building a relationship with the veteran quarterback. We both want the same thing,' Jones said. 'We want the Giants to win football games and that's the goal of everyone here. I'm certainly going to let that be known that that's my goal. However that happens, whatever the plan is, I'm here to do that. I understand my role is to learn from him and I'll certainly be focused on improving myself every day and making sure I'm improving, but at the end of the day we want to win. If that's the mindset, we'll be good.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is going to learn behind Eli Manning for an unknown amount of time. The rookie from Duke was a controversial pick for the Giants at no.6 overall. Jones is athletic and has good footwork as a passer but his game is wildly inconsistent. We'll see if he can develop as the Giants quarterback of the future.

SEA - Seattle won't rush WR Doug Baldwin

    Source: ESPN.com - Brady Henderson

Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin (hernia, knee, shoulder) will be given time to make a decision about his future in the wake of another surgery; head coach Pete Carroll said Baldwin was 'working through it,' and had earned that right.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Baldwin is likely going to retire. The Seahawks added three wide receivers in the 2019 NFL draft so clearly they're planning on moving on without him. There are some signing bonus ramifications if Baldwin retires, so he might just wait for the team to release him.

ARI - TE Maxx Williams lands 1-year deal

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating a previous report, free-agent TE Maxx Williams (Ravens) signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals on Friday, May 3. Further terms of the deal were not available.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams has always had potential as a pass-catching weapon for an offense, but his pro career has been disappointing due to injury and inconsistency. The Cardinals should fill the air with footballs in Kliff Kingsbury's 'Air Raid' system, but that's also an offense (in college) that doesn't feature tight ends. We'll see how Williams fits into the scheme in 2019.

DEN - WR Emmanuel Sanders progressing well

Source: NFL Network - James Palmer

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (Achilles) was spotted running with cleats for the first time Friday, May 3 - his first such activity since suffering a torn Achilles on Dec. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanders should be back on the field sometime around training camp. We should see second-year pro Courtland Sutton take over as the no.1 receiver for the Broncos. If healthy, Sanders makes for a fine no.2 receiver.

SF - San Francisco inks five draft picks

    Source: 49ers.com

San Francisco 49ers third-round WR Jalen Hurd, fifth-round LB Dre Greenlaw, sixth-round TE Kaden Smith, sixth-round OT Justin Skule and sixth-round CB Tim Harris were signed to four-year contracts Friday, May 3. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hurd is the player to watch from this group. The big Baylor receiver has a fantastic 'my ball' mentality and does a good job of using his length and strength to bully smaller defenders. The 49ers have quite the collection of young wide receivers now, and it will be interesting to see if Hurd can win the no.2 or no.3 job with the team as a rookie.

IND - QB Chad Kelly visiting for tryout

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Zak Keefer

Free-agent QB Chad Kelly will try out for the Indianapolis Colts over the weekend of Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5, at the team's rookie minicamp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kelly looked like he might actually start last year for the Broncos when Case Keenum continued to struggle. Instead, he was kicked off the team after an incident where he stumbled into someone's house inebriated after a party. Kelly has a big arm and is athletic, but there's always something off the field holding him back. We'll see if he can latch on with the Colts. Head coach Frank Reich is a former teammate of Kelly's uncle, former Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly.

    Sunday Update

DAL - New deal for QB Dak Prescott by Week 1?

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Clarence E. Hill Jr.

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott hopefully will sign a contract extension with the Cowboys before the start of the 2019 regular season, according to owner/general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Prescott was a fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft so there is no fifth-year option for the young passer. Instead, he's in the final year of his rookie contract in 2019. His new deal won't make him the highest paid quarterback in the NFL, but Prescott should get quite the raise in the near future.

OAK - WR Antonio Brown to sit preseason

Source: The Athletic - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders WR Antonio Brown won't play at all in the preseason, according to head coach Jon Gruden.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It would be nice to see a bit of Brown in the preseason so he can develop in-game chemistry with QB Derek Carr. The Raiders might change their mind later in the summer, but for now don't expect to see Brown in exhibition games.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy a candidate to be dealt?

    Source: ESPN.com - Bill Barnwell

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy is someone that could be traded before this year's deadline, in the opinion of ESPN's Bill Barnwell, who notes the team signed free-agent RBs Frank Gore and T.J. Yeldon and also drafted RB Devin Singletary in Round 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watch this situation closely to see if anything comes to fruition. Bills GM Brandon Beane said McCoy is still their featured back after the draft. The team could save $6.4 million if they cut McCoy before Week 1.

DET - RB Kerryon Johnson fully healthy

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) said he is fully recovered from last year's knee and injury and back to his old self, and his goal in 2019 is to play in every game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the second-year pro here. Johnson is the top back for the Lions, but he could be pushed for playing time by veteran C.J. Anderson. As a rookie in 2018, Johnson played in 10 games averaging a healthy 5.4 yards per carry. Fantasy GMs should look at him as a potential RB2 if he is the bellcow the Lions hope he could be. Johnson has a current ADP of RB28 (6.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DAL - Dallas has timetable for WR Amari Cooper deal

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Clarence E. Hill Jr.

Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper hopefully will sign a contract extension with the Cowboys before the start of the 2019 regular season, according to owner/general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys gave up a first-round pick for Cooper, so they're likely to extend him at some point this offseason. Cooper is heading into the final year of his rookie deal in 2019.

DAL - No timetable for RB Ezekiel Elliott deal

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Clarence E. Hill Jr.

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott is a candidate for a contract extension, but executive vice president Stephen Jones said there is no timetable for an agreement.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Prescott is likely third in line for the Cowboys when it comes to contract extensions. They picked up his fifth-year option and have him under team control through the 2020 season. We might see Elliott have to wait until next offseason for a new deal.

BAL - Trace McSorley signs contract

    Source: BaltimoreRavens.com - Clifton Brown

Baltimore Ravens sixth-round draft choice QB Trace McSorley signed a four-year contract with the Ravens Saturday, May 4. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McSorley is an athletic player who could play quarterback or switch to play defensive back. His athleticism is not quite on the level of Lamar Jackson (who is?) but he might be able to latch on as a no.3 quarterback behind Jackson and primary backup Robert Griffin III.

SEA - Two WRs not taking part in minicamp

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks WRs Gary Jennings (hamstring) and John Ursua (hamstring) are not participating in the rookie minicamp this weekend because of hamstring injuries. Neither injury is considered serious.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jennings isn't known as a speedy guy, but he can work underneath routes due to his footwork and guile. Ursua is extremely athletic and coming off a season where he had over 1,300 yards receiving and a whopping 16 receiving touchdowns. We'll monitor both players in dynasty formats.

KC - Mecole Hardman under contract

    Source: Chiefs.com

Kansas City Chiefs second-round draft choice WR Mecole Hardman signed a four-year contract with the Chiefs Saturday, May 4. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hardman is the team's insurance in case Tyreek Hill is further suspended by the league...or if the team outright releases him. In college at Georgia, Hardman flashed big-play ability and lots of speed. He reminded some in the scouting community of Tyler Lockett (Seahawks) because of his quickness and run-after-the-catch ability.

DEN - TE Jake Butt's days could be numbered

    Source: ESPN.com - Bill Barnwell

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) is unlikely to finish the season with the team, in the opinion of ESPN's Bill Barnwell, who sees TEs Noah Fant and Jeff Heuerman ahead of Butt, blocking his path to playing time.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't think that's the case for Butt...unless he gets hurt again. Butt is a good 'Y' tight end (all purpose) and gives the Broncos valuable depth at the position. Fant, the team's first-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, should be the lead tight end with Heuerman working as a blocker. That's great if everyone stays healthy, but Heuerman has never played a full 16-game season in four years of playing for the Broncos. It would be wise to keep Butt around.

TEN - WR Tajae Sharpe on the bubble?

    Source: ESPN.com - Bill Barnwell

Tennessee Titans WR Tajae Sharpe could be the odd man out among Tennessee's receivers, in the opinion of Bill Barnwell, who sees the additions of WRs Adam Humphries and A.J. Brown as possibly pushing Sharpe off the roster since he doesn't play special teams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sharpe had intriguing talent coming out of UMASS as a fifth-round pick for the Titans in 2016...but he has yet to play up to his potential. He started 14 games in 2018 but only had 26 catches for 316 yards and two receiving touchdowns. He is most certainly on the bubble.

ARI - New role for WR Christian Kirk?

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Sando

Arizona Cardinals WR Christian Kirk could be used as 'a bubble screen guy where you get it in his hands' in the mold of Chicago Bears RB Tarik Cohen, according to one NFL executive.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kirk broke his foot last December but has had no setbacks in his recovery. We're excited to see Kliff Kingsbury's 'Air Raid' system and how Kirk fits in. As a rookie in 2018, Kirk snared 43 catches for 690 yards and three receiving touchdowns. This season, Kirk is going off the board at WR65 (14.11) in 12-team PPR leagues. If he's a 'bubble screen guy' in that offense, Kirk could outperform that average draft position.

OAK - Keelan Doss eyeing roster spot

Source: The Athletic - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders WR Keelan Doss said head coach Jon Gruden told him that he has a good chance to make the 53-man roster.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Doss was picked up as an undrafted free agent out of UC-Davis after the 2019 NFL draft. He's likely going to be a big slot in the NFL. He's not the fastest wide receiver out there, but measuring at 6'2" 211 pounds Doss does a good job of making contested catches.

He needs to start avoiding contact more.
