NFL Player News - Week of 8/27/18

NYG - RB Saquon Barkley takes part in practice

    Source: Giants.com - Dan Salomone

New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley (hamstring) participated in team drills during practice Sunday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a great sign for Barkley's Week 1 availability and effectiveness, as long as he makes it through the next two weeks of practice without incident.

PHI - QB Carson Wentz not cleared for contact yet

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz (knee) has yet to be cleared for contact as of Sunday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With the season opener on a Thursday, it's difficult to picture Wentz being ready to go. Nick Foles had a great postseason, but he'll bring down the projections across the board for the offense against Atlanta. Wentz could make his debut Week 2 at Tampa.

IND - QB Andrew Luck not all the way back

Source: The Athletic - Stephen Holder

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) has acknowledged his 'fastball' is not where it needs to be, but he believes it will come with time, according to Stephen Holder of The Athletic.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Luck isn't going to be his old self upon his return and might rely more on short passing to Eric Ebron, Jack Doyle, and the running backs at first. Even though Luck isn't going to be projected at his old production levels, his ADP more than reflects the uncertainty.

CIN - WR John Ross makes a splash in dress rehearsal

    Source: ESPN.com

Cincinnati Bengals WR John Ross tallied two receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown in the team's third preseason game versus the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ross also dropped a perfectly thrown slant that he might have taken to the house. He is a great late round pick with the potential for a Week 1 outburst against the Colts.

CIN - WR A.J. Green finds the end zone Sunday

    Source: ESPN.com

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green call four passes for 50 yards and a touchdown in the team's third preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Green is in mid-season form and he is well-deserving of a pick at ADP.

BUF - QB Josh Allen checked for concussion and cleared

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen (head) went 6-of-12 for 34 yards in the team's third preseason game versus the Cincinnati Bengals before leaving the game late in the first half after his head bounced off the turf. He was cleared to be able to return to the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Allen wasn't as bad as his stats, it was his line not giving him time to throw, although he did miss an open Charles Clay downfield because of an uncharacteristic underthrow. It is going to be a long year for the Bills offense if this offensive line doesn't improve.

CIN - QB Andy Dalton shines Sunday

    Source: ESPN.com

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton finished 11-of-16 for 180 yards and two touchdowns in less than a half of action in the team's third preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dalton was fantastic and were it not for drops, he would have been even more productive. He's looking like a value heading into a Week 1 matchup against Indianapolis.

TEN - Rishard Mathews cleared to practice

Tennessee Titans WR Rishard Mathews was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, Aug. 26. WR Michael Campanaro was placed on the Reserve/Injured list in a corresponding move.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matthews had meniscus surgery a few weeks ago and appears to be ready to get back up to speed for Week 1 against Miami. He might be slotted back into the starting lineup, although Taywan Taylor has had a great summer and might persuade the team to put Matthews in a more limited role to start the season and let play decide what happens from there.

NYJ - RB Elijah McGuire could land on short-term IR

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Jets RB Elijah McGuire (foot) has been ruled out for the regular-season opener and head coach Todd Bowles told reporters Sunday, Aug. 26, he would not rule out placing McGuire on the Reserve/Injured list to start the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well that's a wide range of possibilities. The Jets might have a roster spot crunch with some much youth and uncertainty on the roster, including carrying three quarterbacks, so that could spell injured reserve for McGuire. If McGuire does end up on injured reserve, that helps Bilal Powell's stock.

NE - WR Eric Decker calls it a career

Source: NFL Network - James Palmer

New England Patriots WR Eric Decker announced his retirement on social media Sunday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Congrats to Decker on a nice NFL career. Best to him for whatever comes next.

NYG - TE Evan Engram held out of practice Sunday

Source: The Athletic - Dan Duggan

New York Giants TE Evan Engram (concussion) was at practice but did not participate Sunday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This shouldn't affect Engram's Week 1 availability against Jacksonville but we'll be watching Week 1 practice reports to be sure. Rhett Ellison would get the start if Engram can't go and Sterling Shepard would be a better WR3/Flex play.

BUF - Time already running out on WR Corey Coleman?

    Source: WKBW.com - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills WR Corey Coleman is not a lock to make the 53-man roster, according to WKBW's Joe Buscaglia.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coleman only garnered a seventh-round pick in return, so there's no strong commitment there. If he can't make the Bills roster with their league worst wide receiver depth chart, it will be time to wonder just why teams are giving up on him even though he has played well at times in limited action.

BAL - Two scores for QB Lamar Jackson

    Source: ESPN.com

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson completed seven of his 10 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown and rushed three times for 39 yards and a touchdown in a 27-10 preseason win over the Miami Dolphins Saturday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson was much better than he was earlier in the preseason, perhaps good enough to give the Ravens reason to release Robert Griffin III and make him the primary backup quarterback. He's still a year away from mattering in fantasy leagues unless Joe Flacco goes down.

    Tuesday Update

NYG - Odell Beckham agrees to massive extension

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension with the Giants Monday, Aug. 27, worth $95 million, according to a source. The deal includes $65 million in guaranteed money.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The guaranteed money is a record for the position. Another record for Beckham is his new average annual salary of $19 million. He is looking to bounce back after an injury-shortened 2017 season, and the team clearly believes he can do just that. This contract situation never turned ugly as Beckham put forth several good faith moves during the offseason. So long as he stays healthy, Beckham is a superstar and no-brainer WR1 for Fantasy GMs.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon will not start Week 1

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (hamstring) will not start Week 1 even if he is completely healthy but will play in the game, according to head coach Hue Jackson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon could end up as a WR2 with WR1 upside for Fantasy GMs this year. In Week 1, we'll be nerfing his projections a bit due to this news. Gordon will be a boom/bust flex play to begin the season if the team has him on any sort of snap count.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed should be ready

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (toes) is on pace to be ready for Week 1, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reed should be ready for the season opener, but how long he stays healthy is anybody's guess. He's a talented tight end with TE1 ability for Fantasy GMs but Reed's injury history is long. If he stays healthy for 16 games (something he's never done as a pro), Reed could be a top-10 fantasy tight end.

CLE - QB Baker Mayfield starting this week

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield will start the final preseason game with head coach Hue Jackson resting the starters. Jackson said Mayfield could play a full half.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That makes sense. Mayfield is set to begin the regular season as a backup to Tyrod Taylor. Once the season is out of hand, Mayfield should take over as the starter. He was the no.1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft and the Browns certainly see him as a potential franchise quarterback of the future.

SEA - WR Doug Baldwin to do more at practice

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin (knee) will be able to do more things during practice this week, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Seahawks have been working Baldwin back cautiously from this knee injury. Baldwin will not play in the final preseason game but is on track for Week 1.

TEN - TE Delanie Walker expects to play Week 1

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans TE Delanie Walker (toe) said he fully expects to be ready for Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Walker has not been practicing since the middle of August due to this injury. It sounds like everything is on track for him to play in the season opener. Walker is a low-end TE1 for Fantasy GMs, and currently he's going off the board at TE9 (7.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

IND - QB Andrew Luck has foot ailment

Source: The Herald Bulletin - George Bremer

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (foot) is dealing with a minor foot issue stemming from Week 3 of the preseason, according to head coach Frank Reich. Luck would play if there was a game this week, however.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This sounds like a minor injury, but we'd feel a lot better if he didn't have any extra nagging injuries heading into the regular season. Luck is coming back from a major shoulder injury and we could see him post QB1 numbers in 2018. Fantasy GMs are taking him off the board at QB8 (8.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

TB - WR Mike Evans back on the field

Source: The Athletic - Greg Auman

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans (back) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Evans is out there practicing but he won't play in the Buccaneers preseason finale. So long as he's healthy, Evans should post WR1 numbers (again) in 2018.

GB - QB Aaron Rodgers dealing with illness

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (illness) is not participating in practice Monday, Aug. 27, because of an illness.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This doesn't sound like a big deal. Rodgers isn't going to play in the team's preseason finale and he should be feeling much better for the start of the regular season.

NE - RB Sony Michel returns to practice

    Source: NESN.com - Doug Kyed

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Michel hasn't practiced with the team since early August. The talented first-round rookie from Georgia is a dynamic running back who is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball. Members of the scouting community regularly compared his game to that of LeSean McCoy and certainly the Patriots are excited about his future. Michel should be ready for the start of the regular season, but when he takes the lead position over Rex Burkhead remains unclear. Fantasy GMs are nabbing him at RB37 (8.04) in 12-team PPR leagues because of Michel's upside in that high-powered offense.

PHI - RB Jay Ajayi not ready to return

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles RB Jay Ajayi (undisclosed) is not participating in practice Monday, Aug. 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reporters around the Eagles are declaring this a 'lower body' injury. Ajayi has missed over a week of practice now due to this ailment. At this moment, it seems like he should be ready for the start of the regular season. When healthy, Ajayi should be the lead back for the Eagles and a RB2 or flex option for Fantasy GMs on a weekly basis.

NYG - TE Evan Engram still sidelined

Source: The Bergen Record - Art Stapleton

New York Giants TE Evan Engram (concussion) did not participate in practice Monday, Aug. 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Engram won't play in the preseason finale, and he should have time to get through the concussion protocol before the start of the regular season. He was concussed last year early in his rookie season and didn't miss a game during that time. He's a TE1 for Fantasy GMs after finishing as the no.5 fantasy tight end in 2017 (standard scoring leagues).

OAK - Oakland trades WR Ryan Switzer

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Jordan Schultz

Oakland Raiders WR Ryan Switzer was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday, Aug. 27, according to a source. It is not known what the Raiders received in return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders traded with the Cowboys for Switzer (a 2017 fourth-round pick) back in April. Switzer wasn't going to do much as a receiver no matter where he was playing, and his main role is on special teams as a returner.

JAX - WR Donte Moncrief has an opening

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Donte Moncrief has an opening to a starting receiver spot with WR Marqise Lee (knee) out for the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moncrief should get more looks now that Marqise Lee is done for the year. How much fantasy value do those extra looks may have is debatable. Keelan Cole likely gets the most boost with the Lee injury. Dede Westbrook will factor into the mix here as well.

    Hi Folks,

News from the Eagles you need to know about. ESPN's Adam Schefter just reported: "Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery is expected to miss at least the first two games of the season, but the team will activate him to the 53-man roster this weekend with optimism he could be back by week 3, per @mortreport and me."

There had been much talk about about Jeffery maybe even missing more if he weren't activated to the 53-man roster. It appears the team will activate him and he won't be on PUP. But it does look like he'll miss at the least the first two weeks.

If you're looking for a sneaky play in those games, we think Eagles TE Dallas Goedert could have a role with Jeffery out as the team adapts. Could be worth a waiver Wire grab. Our Sigmund Bloom's a fan and so am I.

Who would you guys recommend I take at number 10 in a 12 team draft I have tomorrow? It's full point PPR so with all the good running backs gone I was thinking of targeting a top wide receiver. In one mock I did DeAndre Hopkins somehow fell to me but I don't know that he'll be there tomorrow. Any insight would be appreciated.

Barkley will be a top 5 pick this year in a lot of drafts this year imo. A lot of people buying into the hype but if he's there I'd definitely take him because I really want a running back with my first pick in drafts this year.

    Wednesday Update

PIT - Le'Veon Bell to report soon?

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Gerry Dulac

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell told some teammates that he will finally report to the Steelers on Labor Day Monday, Sept. 3, according to sources. Labor Day marks the first day of practice for the regular season. Bell has not signed his franchise tag and did not report to any offseason activities, including training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Last year in a similar situation, Bell reported nine days before the start of the regular season. We're about at that point again. Offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner said the Steelers will need to evaluate where Bell is physically before determining his Week 1 workload. Stay tuned.

SEA - WR Doug Baldwin honest about knee

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin (knee) said he will play in Week 1 but that he'll need to manage his knee issue throughout the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Baldwin will face a revamped Broncos secondary in Week 1 on the road. Dealing with this knee management, Fantasy GMs should nerf the expectations for Baldwin early in the season. He's most likely to perform like a WR2 with upside while he continues to manage his knee.

MIN - WR Adam Thielen hurt in practice

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen (leg) injured his left leg during practice Tuesday, Aug. 28, but said he's good after leaving the field under his own power, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This sounds somewhat minor but there's not much information out right now. Stay tuned. As we all know, Thielen won't participate in the Vikings preseason finale. We'll have an update about his status during the week of practice leading up to their Week 1 contest in the regular season.

PHI - WR Alshon Jeffery will miss games

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Philadelphia Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) is expected to miss the first two games of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He will be activated to the 53-man roster from the Physically Unable to Perform list this weekend in hopes that he will be available for Week 3. If he were to begin the regular season on the PUP list, Jeffery would be forced to miss the first six weeks of the year by rule. Fantasy GMs should consider Jeffery a WR3 or flex option in PPR leagues upon his return.

IND - QB Andrew Luck back next week

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Zak Keefer

Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (foot) will return to practice Monday, Sept. 3, according to head coach Frank Reich.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No need to rush him during a week when the team isn't going to play him in the preseason finale. Luck's shoulder injury was enough of a problem but he seemed to be working through it with varied success as a passer during the preseason. This foot injury seems minor, so expect a near 100 percent Luck for the opener.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon working on the side

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (hamstring) is doing individual work on the side Tuesday, Aug. 28.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon is not quite yet ready for team drills. Head coach Hue Jackson says Gordon has been catching passes and doing other light training while getting closer to practicing.

PHI - Philly likely to wait on naming Week 1 QB

Source: NBC Sports Philadelphia - Reuben Frank

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz (knee) continues to mend from knee surgery late last season, and head coach Doug Pederson said he wants to know by Friday, Aug. 31, whom his starting quarterback will be for the Sept. 6 season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Pederson, however, added the quarterback decision likely won't be announced until 90 minutes before kickoff when the inactive list is due.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wentz is getting closer to being ready but the team isn't going to tip their hand. We should see Wentz get cleared for full contact in the near future. The Eagles open the season next Thursday against the Falcons.

SF - TE George Kittle back in limited fashion

    Source: 49ers.com - Joe Fann

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (shoulder) returned to practice on a limited basis Tuesday, Aug. 28. He participated in individual drills but did not run routes.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy GMs like the idea of Kittle as a TE2 with upside in 2018. That's why he's going off the board at TE13 (12.03) in 12-team PPR leagues. He's been out of action since the 49ers first preseason game.

SEA - WR Brandon Marshall to be cut?

    Source: ESPN.com - Brady Henderson

Seattle Seahawks WR Brandon Marshall is not projected to make the final roster, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Brady Henderson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall has been looking good in practice according to reporters around the team. They could release him and then bring him back after Week 1 when his salary would not be fully guaranteed. Marshall is likely fourth on the depth chart at this time if he does make the team.

ARI - QB Josh Rosen back at practice Tuesday

Source: The Arizona Republic - Kent Somers

Arizona Cardinals QB Josh Rosen (thumb) was spotted throwing during the open portion of practice Tuesday, Aug. 28.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's progress but it doesn't mean Rosen is going to play on Thursday against the Broncos. The rookie first-round pick is set to be the quarterback of the future for the Cardinals. This year he will begin the regular season as a backup behind Sam Bradford.

CHI - TE Adam Shaheen unlikely to go on IR

    Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Adam L. Jahns

Chicago Bears TE Adam Shaheen (ankle) is not a candidate to end up on the Reserve/Injured list, according to head coach Matt Nagy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shaheen's injury was a bit worse than originally feared but it is good news he's unlikely to be placed on Injured Reserve. The second-year tight end is set to play behind Trey Burton in 2018. He doesn't have to go on IR but we doubt he's ready for the start of the regular season.

CHI - WR Kevin White expected to make the cut

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White is projected to make the 53-man roster, according to ESPN's to Jeff Dickerson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A first-round pick in 2015, White has only played in five games during his three years with the Bears. Injuries have knocked his career off track to this point. He's buried on the depth chart (likely the Bears no4 wide receiver) but he's healthy so they might as well see what he can do as a reserve player.

NYJ - NYJ QB decision waiting on preseason finale

    Source: SI.com

New York Jets QBs Sam Darnold, Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater all are in the running to start in Week 1, and Jets head coach Todd Bowles said he likely will wait until after the team's preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 30, to make the decision. 'Sitting down with the coaches, we'll go over everything and everybody will give their opinion,' Bowles said. 'We just haven't talked about it, and we won't until after the last preseason game. We'll sit down as a staff and we'll go over every position, including that one, and we'll come out with our guys.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets have a good problem but it is a problem nonetheless. Darnold is the quarterback of the future and the 2018 first-round pick has the potential to be a franchise player. They might determine he's not yet ready. Bridgewater has played well this preseason and was/is on the trade block. No takers for Bridgewater just yet means the team might just begin the year with him as the starter. McCown is the safe 'in case of emergency' veteran who could start in a pinch.

NO - WR Cameron Meredith struggling in preseason

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith (knee) has recorded zero catches in 48 preseason snaps, which also includes a dropped pass that turned into an interception. He played mostly with the backups in the team's most recent preseason game Saturday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Meredith is struggling and rookie Tre'Quan Smith has been impressing. Those two are battling for the spot opposite Michael Thomas in the starting lineup. Meredith is the only Saints WR not names Michael Thomas currently getting draft. He's going off the board at WR51 (11.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah to get plenty of work Thursday

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah will likely see 'significant playing time' in the team's preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday, Aug. 30.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The days of Abdullah potentially being the lead back for the Lions are long gone. LeGarrette Blount, rookie Kerryon Johnson and Theo Riddick make up the backfield now. Abdullah is on the roster bubble. If he plays well in the preseason finale it might be enough to save his spot...or the team could be featuring him to draw interest for a trade. Stay tuned.

Even though he remains a backup I like the move for Bridgewater and the Saints because I think he might be the answer for the Saints future plans after Drew Brees career is over.

    Friday Update

CIN - QB Matt Barkley injures knee

    Source: ESPN.com - Katherine Terrell

Cincinnati Bengals QB Matt Barkley (knee) suffered a left knee injury during the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 30, and will not return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barkley is likely to be the backup to Andy Dalton this year. No word on the severity of this injury. Jeff Driskel took over for an injured Barkley.

NE - TE Rob Gronkowski reworks contract

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski reworked his contract, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. The Patriots will add $4.3 million to Gronkowski's contract this year, increasing the maximum value to $13.050 million if he reaches all the incentives.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Regardless of how much he gets paid, Gronkowski is arguably the top fantasy tight end in any draft. That's where his TE ADP is and where it should be. His overall ADP is 21, which may be something you can't wait for if you really want him.

NE - RB Sony Michel may miss Week 1

Source: The Athletic - Jeff Howe

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) may not be ready for Week 1, The Athletic's Jeff Howe reported. Michel had his knee scoped in early August and just returned to doing individual drills in practice last week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Call it the "Curse of Laurence Maroney." With Michel out, it looks like Rex Burkhead will lead this RBBC monster, but he's dealing with a slight tear in his meniscus. The Patriots backfield is always a riddle, but seems particularly hard to parse this year. We lean towards Burkhead, and his ADP of 28th back off the board as we are concerned with Michel's knee and recovery.

NYJ - QB Sam Darnold learning

    Source: MMQB - Albert Breer

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold learns from his mistakes and rarely makes the same mistake twice, according to head coach Todd Bowles. One practice, Bowles blitzed the house at Darnold, and he quickly threw to a crossing receiver in heavy traffic and was picked off. Bowles sent another blitz at Darnold, and he checked it at the line and went to his next read. It would be a major upset if Darnold doesn't open the year the starter, in the opinion of MMQB's Albert Breer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's not just Bowles or a smitten Jets media crew. Darnold has received praise from backup quarterback Josh McCown and numerous players on both his team and those he has faced. It's likely to be a rough year behind a shaky offensive line and with what will probably be a fairly conservative offense, so we wouldn't waste a roster spot on him, even as a late round flier.

NO - Taysom Hill to focus on special teams

Source: The Times-Picayune - Josh Katzenstein

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill is expected to be one of the team's core special teams players following the acquisition of QB Teddy Bridgewater. Hill had been competing to be the team's No. 2 quarterback, but that role will now go to Bridgewater, freeing up Hill for extended special teams duty.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's unusual and may not be a great sign for his future as a quarterback. On the other hand, when you're on the roster bubble, special teams can save your spot. Kudos for Hill's willingness to contribute when he plays a position which normally can avoid special teams duty.

    Saturday Update

CLE - WR Josh Gordon to resume practicing Monday

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (hamstring) is expected to return to practice Monday, Sept. 3. Head coach Hue Jackson told reporters Gordon will be 'a little bit more than limited' and focus on route-running when he gets back.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon isn't a sure thing for Week 1, which is good news for the Steelers defense. We might need to watch him play one week before trusting him in fantasy lineups.

PHI - WR Alshon Jeffery to come off PUP

    Source: NJ.com - Zack Rosenblatt

Philadelphia Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) will be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, Aug. 31, according to head coach Doug Pederson, but Pederson wouldn't say how much time Jeffery could still miss.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jeffery will miss at least two games according to Adam Schefter, and we won't be able to trust him in lineups until we see him play, so that's Week 4 at the earliest. Jeffery should be discounted from his healthy ADP at least as much as Mark Ingram and Julian Edelman.

NO - RB Shane Vereen going on IR

Source: The Times-Picayune - Josh Katzenstein

New Orleans Saints RB Shane Vereen (undisclosed) will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list, according to a source. He left the final preseason game early Thursday, Aug. 30, and was having his fingers looked at on the sidelines.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Vereen might have been in line to make the final roster as a backup to Alvin Kamara in the passing game, but that went by the wayside when he got hurt.

PIT - WR Eli Rogers likely to start on PUP list

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Eli Rogers (knee) is expected to start the 2018 season on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rogers will also serve a one-game suspension. Ryan Switzer will have a chance to seize the backup slot job while Rogers is out, assuming the recent trade target makes the team.

NO - WR Brandon Tate released

Source: The Times-Picayune - Josh Katzenstein

New Orleans Saints WR Brandon Tate was released Friday, Aug. 31, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tate was seen by some as having a good chance to make the team because of his return abilities. He might get a call during the season if a team loses their return specialist. This could mean Tommylee Lewis made the Saints again this year.

HOU - WR Braxton Miller given his walking papers

Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller was released Friday, Aug. 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bruce Ellington will be the Week 1 slot receiver, but rookie Keke Coutee will also ramp up to a role soon after he missed most of camp and the preseason with a hamstring injury. The Texans are giving up on a third round pick two years into his career.

PHI - QB Christian Hackenberg waived

Source: NJ Advance Media - Matt Lombardo

Philadelphia Eagles QB Christian Hackenberg was released Friday, Aug. 31, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The least shocking final cut of the over 1000 we will hear about this weekend.

MIA - Greg Joseph released by Dolphins

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins PK Greg Joseph was released Friday, Aug. 31, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jason Sanders won the kicker competition, but we can't know if he'll win the kicker job for Week 1 until we see if the Dolphins sign a kicker released by another team.

NYJ - WR Jermaine Kearse may miss Week 1

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

Updating previous reports, New York Jets WR Jermaine Kearse (abdomen) is feared to be out for Week 1 after a medical procedure on his abdominal injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Terrelle Pryor is getting healthy and now will get some snaps in Week 1 against the Lions. Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson will be the primary receivers, with Darius Slay locking down one side of the field, but the other a soft spot for Sam Darnold to rely on when it's time to complete a key third down pass.

    Sunday Update

PHI - QB Nick Foles to start Week 1?

    Source: ESPN.com - Tim McManus

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles will be the Week 1 starter, according to Tim McManus of ESPN.com, and McManus believes QB Carson Wentz (knee) could miss a week or two.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That is the best move for the Eagles. Wentz needs to get as healthy as possible and Foles gives them time to do just that.

PHI - QB Carson Wentz to sit a week or two?

    Source: ESPN.com - Tim McManus

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz (knee) could miss the first couple of regular season games, according to Tim McManus of ESPN.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no need to rush him back. Wentz is working back from the knee injury that ended his season in 2017, and he's been on schedule. Just to be safe, the Eagles could start Foles to begin the season.

SF - RB Jerick McKinnon officially done

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the 49ers here. McKinnon was added in free agency to be the lead back for the team this year and he didn't even make it to the regular season.

OAK - PK Mike Nugent wins kicking job

Source: The Mercury News - Matt Schneidman

Oakland Raiders PK Mike Nugent has won the placekicking battle against PK Eddy Pineiro.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

TB - QB Jameis Winston officially suspended

    Source: Buccaneers.com - Scott Smith

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston was placed on the Reserve/Suspended by Commissioner list Saturday, Sept. 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Winston is suspended for the first three games of the season. He is not able to be at the team facility during the time of his suspension. During his absence, the Bucs will go with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starter.

OAK - WR Martavis Bryant released, faces suspension

    Source: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano

The Oakland Raiders released WR Martavis Bryant on Saturday, Sept. 1. He is facing another suspension, pending appeal, which explains why the team jettisoned him.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders gave up a third round pick (no.79 overall) for Bryant this year in the 2018 NFL draft. Bryant was reportedly struggling in camp with the Raiders and this new suspension essentially sealed his fate. Seth Roberts is now in line to be the no.3 wide receiver behind Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson in 2018.

HOU - D'Onta Foreman to miss first six weeks

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman (Achilles') was placed on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, Sept. 1. He will miss the first six weeks of the 2018 regular season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That was expected and now Foreman has more time to heal. After the six week absence, the Texans will have three weeks to decide whether or not to activate Foreman or put him on season ending Injured Reserve. When Foreman returns to the lineup, he'll cut into the playing time of Lamar Miller.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman sent packing

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating a previous report, Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman was waived Saturday, Sept. 1, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A first-round pick out of UCF in the 2015 NFL draft, Perriman's pro career was set back by injury and inconsistency. He's only played 27 games in three years and had just 10 catches for the Ravens in 2017. Perriman is a bust for the Ravens but he should get a shot with another team.

NE - RB Mike Gillislee beaten out for spot

Source: Boston Herald - Kevin Duffy

The New England Patriots released RB Mike Gillislee, a source said Saturday, Sept. 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jeremy Hill is the power back for the Patriots with the release of Gillislee. A team in need of a veteran back might give Gillislee a call.

NYJ - TE Clive Walford has been released

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New York Jets TE Clive Walford was released Saturday, Sept. 1, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets wanted to see what they could get for Walford in a trade but that was a futile effort. Walford is athletic and can create mismatches but he's never played up to his potential.

NYJ - RB Thomas Rawls shown the door

Source: The Athletic - Connor Hughes

New York Jets RB Thomas Rawls was released Saturday, Sept. 1, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets have all the running back help they need without Rawls. They'll move forward with Isaiah Crowell and Bilal Powell working in a RBBC.

    PHI - Donnel Pummphrey cut

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Philadelphia Eagles RB Donnel Pumphrey was waived Saturday, Sept. 1, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Darren Sproles healthy the Eagles didn't need Pumphrey as a change of pace back. After a lost rookie season due to injury, Pumphrey could stay with the Eagles on the practice squad if they'd like.

BUF - WR Corey Coleman released

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

The Buffalo Bills released WR Corey Coleman Saturday, Sept. 1, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills just traded for Coleman back in August. A first-round pick out of Baylor in the 2016 NFL draft, Coleman was upset with his role with the Browns and a fresh start with the Bills didn't help him. If unclaimed through waiver, the Bills will have to pay the rest of his $3.5 million salary.

BAL - Teams looking at Robert Griffin

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Baltimore Ravens QB Robert Griffin III is drawing trade interest, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Griffin looked good in the preseason as he tries to get his pro career back on track. With Teddy Bridgewater getting traded to the Saints, other teams in need of a veteran backup could look to Baltimore and the price tag for Griffin. While Bridgewater fetched the Jets a third round pick, Griffin would be a lower cost...perhaps a late round pick for the Ravens.
