Eye on MLB, June 18: A-Rod now only one hit away from 3,000

    By Eye on Baseball staff

    June 19, 2015 12:15 am ET

Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez is on the verge of making history. A-Rod went 2 for 4 with two singles and a walk on Thursday night and is now just one hit shy of 3,000 for his career. He'll be the 29th member of the 3,000-hit club. Here are the videos of hits No. 2,998 and No. 2,999.
Rodriguez did get two chances at hit No. 3,000 on Thursday. He flew out on the first pitch in the seventh inning, then drew a four-pitch walk in the eighth. None of the four pitches were close and Marlins reliever Sam Dyson heard a ton of boos from the Yankee Stadium crowd. They wanted to see history.
The Yankees will open a three-game weekend series with the Tigers at Yankee Stadium on Friday night. Justin Verlander will start the series opener for Detroit. Verlander was scheduled to start Thursday night, but the Tigers and Reds were rained out in Cincinnati
A-Rod and Verlander have a ton of head-to-head history. Rodriguez is a career .294/.415/.676 hitter with four home runs, six walks and six strikeouts in 41 career plate appearances against Verlander. Many of those plate appearances came a long time ago though, when A-Rod was a different hitter and Verlander was a different pitcher.
The Yankees are two games into an eight-game homestand, so chances are A-Rod will record his 3,000th hit at home in Yankee Stadium. If he doesn't get it Friday, it'll probably happen some time this weekend instead. Either way, Rodriguez is now just one hit shy of joining one of baseball's most exclusive and historic clubs.

Still very early into his career but he does a seem a bit injury prone. Could be the new Troy Tulowitzki in disappointing fantasy owners every year with his lack of durability.

That's a nice return on a trade. Perhaps you'd like to ship out Bryant in a certain league!

Over this record-tying span of five games, Sale's pitched to an ERA of 0.72, struck out 65 against just six walks, and allowed 17 hits in 37 1/3 innings. On the season Sale's struck out 34.3 percent of opposing hitters, while the average major-league starter has a figure of 19.3.

3000th hit for A-Rod was a HR off Verlander. Verlander looks more washed up than A-Rod.

The Nationals are loaded with pitching talent. I'd tell Strasburg to get the minor leaguers out before he's back with the team.

Joe Ross struck out 11 batters and allowed just one run over 7 1/3 innings in Friday's 4-1 win over the Rays.

Ross was sensational, holding the Rays to just six and a walk. The lone run scored on a single from Gregory Polanco in the second inning. The young right-hander has been very impressive during his first stint in the majors, posting a 2.66 ERA and 23/2 K/BB ratio in 20 1/3 innings through three starts. He figures to head down to the minors once Stephen Strasburg (neck) is ready to come off the disabled list, but the Nationals have to be thrilled with what they've seen thus far.

3,000th hit vs. Cy Young winner is rare

A-Rod became just the 2nd player to record his 3,000th hit against a former Cy Young winner when he sent a Justin Verlander pitch out of the park Friday. The other was Dave Winfield, who reached the milestone on a single off Oakland's Dennis Eckersley in 1993.

    What's a no-hitter worth on Fan Duel?
Scherzer almost perfect vs Pirates. Tabata leaned into one with 2 outs in the 9th.

I was just telling my buddy that may have been the most anti-climatic no-hitter ever.

I was hoping Harrison was going to get a knock to ruin the whole thing.

It almost seemed like "forced excitement" for the no-hitter.

    Everyone wanted the perfect game...

2nd least painful loss of a perfect game with 2 outs in 9th IMO

the Armando galaragga 28 out perfect game that Jim Joyce tarnished was even more painful

The Diamondbacks announced that they have dealt right-hander Bronson Arroyo and Touki Toussaint (their No. 5 prospect) to the Braves in a three-player deal on Saturday. In exchange, the Braves will be sending infielder Phil Gosselin to the Diamondbacks.
Arroyo made 14 starts for Arizona in 2014 before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He has yet to pitch this year, and is not expected back until at least August. The Braves will take on the entirety of Arroyo's contract, which includes $9.5 million for this year, and a $4.5 million buyout on a $13 million option for 2016, per FoxSports.com.
Toussaint was a first-round draft pick (16th overall) by the Diamondbacks in 2014. The right-hander has been pitching with Class A Kane County this year, posting a 3.69 ERA through seven starts.
Meanwhile, Gosselin underwent surgery to repare a fractured thumb in May. He is currently on the disabled list and holds a .325 batting average in 40 at-bats this year.
The Diamondbacks seem satisfied with the current state of their pitching corps, allowing them to deal away Toussaint in the deal.
"We are getting some good pitching from our young rotation and that's the direction we are going to go," D-Backs general manager Dave Stewart said.

D-backs trade Arroyo, former top pick to Braves

In a trade involving two injured players, the Arizona Diamondbacks traded Bronson Arroyo and last year's first-round draft pick, Touki Toussaint, to the Braves for infielder Phil Gosselin.

So to save themselves $10 million the D-Bags gave away their 1st round pick? That's shameful.

    SS Corey Seager, Dodgers
Seager, 21, is the younger brother of Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager and the No. 1 prospect in the minors right now. He's a bat-first prospect with a compact left-handed swing that allows him to catch up to inside pitches as well as drive stuff on the outer half with authority. Seager projects to hit for both average and power down the road, and could threaten 50-plus doubles at the major-league level.
Defensively, scouts are divided on Seager. Well, somewhat. Almost all agree he will not remain a shortstop long-term. Some think he needs to move to third base right away and others feel he could stick at short for at least a few years. Either way, the Dodgers are right to keep Seager at short now because that's where he's most valuable. He'll be a passable defender at either spot. His true value lies in his bat.
Seager opened this season at Double-A, raked (.375/.407/.675) in 20 games, then was promoted to Triple-A, where he has a .296/.348/.456 batting line with 13 doubles and four home runs in 42 games. Jimmy Rollins is stumbling through the worst season of his career right now, so fans are understandably calling for Seager to take over at short. I'm not sure if that will happen anytime soon, but I definitely expect Seager to make his big league debut this year, perhaps as a September call-up a la Joc Pederson last year.

    Nova returning from Tommy John.

Ivan Nova (elbow) will make his season debut on Wednesday against the Phillies.

Nova was knocked around in his final rehab start, but he's feeling healthy and showing good velocity so the Yankees are ready to stick him back into their rotation. The club will go with a six-man rotation for at least one turn, so Nathan Eovaldi and Adam Warren are both safe for now. Fantasy owners should probably give Nova at least a start or two before putting him back into their lineups.
