Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright will see a doctor Monday after exiting Saturday's start with an Achilles injury, but the expectation is that he'll miss the remainder of the season, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports.
The Cardinals placed Wainwright on the 15-day DL Sunday with what's being called a low left ankle and Achilles injury. In his place, the team has recalled catcher Cody Stanley.
Wainwright appeared to suffer the injury during one of his own at-bats, stumbling out of the batter's box. The Cardinals announced that the pitcher suffered an ankle injury, and the pitcher himself said after the game that the injury was in the back of the ankle.
Wainwright is 2-1 with a 1.44 ERA and 18:3 K:BB ratio in 25 innings. With Jaime Garcia (shoulder) and Triple-A starter Marco Gonzales (pectoral) still on the mend, the team could turn to Triple-A pitcher Tyler Lyons or long-reliever Carlos Villanueva to fill Wainwright's rotation spot for the immediate future, with Garcia or Gonzales likely to enter the rotation when healthy if Wainwright is dealing with a season-ending injury.

The DH is coming, two star pitchers hurt in the same week while batting. It's just a matter of time.

    Booooo

Alex Rodriguez inched one step closer to tying Willie Mays, blasting his 659th career home run in Sunday's 6-4 victory over the Mets.

His solo shot came courtesy of Mets starter Jon Niese and got the Yankees on the board in the first inning. He would also add an RBI double, finishing the night 2-for-4. The 39-year-old has been awfully impressive thus far in 2015, slashing .267/.405/.583 with five homers and 13 RBI.

As pitcher Matt Harvey continues to recover from the Tommy John surgery that sidelined him last year, the Mets will take a cautious approach to keeping their ace healthy, experimenting with six-man rotations in order to ensure Harvey keeps his start total right around 30 this season, per Newsday.
The report says the Mets' plan is to try and keep Harvey at 30 starts, with no more than 32 during the regular season. To that end, New York will temporarily switch to a six-man rotation and call up Rafael Montero to start Tuesday against the Marlins.
Harvey is 4-0 with a 3.04 ERA in four starts and is averaging 6 2/3 innings, a pace that would put him at 200 innings for 30 starts or 213 innings for 32 by the end of the season -- more than the 180 to 190 the Mets had planned for the pitcher.

This is where Wheeler would have been helpful.

Dodgers outfielder Carl Crawford was placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's contest against San Francisco after MRI revealed a torn right oblique, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"It's a bad tear," Crawford said.
Crawford suffered the injury during Monday's game against the Giants. Manager Don Mattingly did not issue a concrete timetable for his return, but said he'd be surprised if his stint on the DL lasted only 15 days. He is hitting .245/.260/.408 with one home run, three RBI and one stolen base in 49 at-bats.
The team recalled Kike Hernandez from Triple-A, and will start in center field, while Alex Guerrero moved to left field in place of Crawford.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters that starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka's current injury does not represent a precursor to Tommy John surgery, per MLB.com. However, he did acknowledge the possibility of losing his starter for en extended period of time with an UCL injury.
Tanaka was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained right forearm and tendinitis in his right wrist. He will be shut down from throwing seven to 10 days and could be sidelined for at least one month.
"Any time you have to shut a pitcher down, there's concern," Girardi said. "With what happened last year, I can't tell you if they're related or not, but you're going to think about it. You're going to think about a lot of different scenarios. Let's just keep our fingers crossed and hope it's not much, but we'll deal with it either way."

Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson had fluid drained from his elbow shortly after Saturday's start, MLB.com reports. Wilson threw his normal between-starts bullpen session Wednesday and said his elbow felt "way better than it was a week ago," when he needed to have his scheduled pushed back a few days due to soreness.
Asked about his level of concern, the pitcher said, "None. There's a formula. I know what to do. We know what the process needs to be. If we just stick to that process, we'll be fine."
Wilson has been told he can continue pitching on regular rest. He'll square off with the Giants Friday and doesn't expect being able to "reach back and throw 94 mph," which is typically his maximum effort.
"But we'll see what happens Friday, in terms of what stuff shows up," Wilson said. "I felt good today. I felt way better today than I did going into my last start, and I pitched well last start."
Wilson also indicated that removal of bone spurs in the elbow this offseason, for the third time in his career, is "inevitable."
"That's not a big deal, though," Wilson said. "It's super straight-forward. The rehab is very short, and then it works better and you go from there."
Wilson is 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA and 18:9 K:BB ratio in 26 innings over four starts.

Marlins pitcher Mat Latos was forced to leave Wednesday's game against the Mets after hitting a single in the fifth inning. Latos reached safely at first, but pulled up lame and headed straight to the Marlins' dugout. Latos was diagnosed with a left hamstring strain and is considered day to day with the injury, the team announced.
"Knock on wood that everything's OK," Latos said after the game, per the Associated Press. "Feel like everything is, but I throw a baseball for a living. I'm not a doctor."
He allowed three runs on five hits in five innings of work.

The Cardinals will start lefty Tim Cooney Thursday against the Phillies, the team announced. Drafted in the third round in 2012, Cooney will be making his major-league debut against the Phillies. He's 2-1 with a 3.63 ERA and 14:5 K:BB ratio in 17 1/3 innings over three starts with Triple-A Memphis. Cooney went 14-6 with a 3.47 ERA and 119:47 K:BB ratio in 158 innings in his first exposure to Triple-A last year.

This guy is as high as -220 today for his major league debut.

Daivd Buchanan isn't that great but his last 2 starts are OK. I think I am going to make a small play on the Phillies today.

Including Cooney, four starting pitchers made their MLB debuts so far this week.

They haven't fared very well. They've given up a combined 14 ER in 9.2 innings.

Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez faced live hitters for the first time since having Tommy John surgery nearly a year ago, per the team's official website on Thursday. Fernandez, who threw 50 pitches in a bullpen session on Monday, tossed approximately 15 pitches at the team's complex in Jupiter, Fla.
"It was competing and it felt really fantastic," Fernandez said, per MLB.com. "Command of the ball was [good], except for one or two pitches that were up in the zone a little bit. [I] was sticking my fastball really well. Breaking ball was good. Changeup was good. And I was really happy with the way everything came out today."
When asked about his timetable on Wednesday, Fernandez refused to speculate when he'll make his season debut.
"Everything depends on [Thursday] and three days after that. That's the approach that I'm taking," Fernandez said, per MLB.com. "I don't want to go crazy and start thinking about a day because it's going to change. I don't want to disappoint myself. ... I feel fantastic. Knocking on wood right now. I feel like I haven't left the game. I do what my doctor says. I've just got to follow a plan, follow the rules the way that I have to."
