    Nebraska's Quarterback Battle

A week into spring practice with new offensive coordinator, Tim Beck, Nebraska is starting over at the quarterback position. And just because Taylor Martinez was the starter of twelve games for the Huskers last season--doesn't mean he's necessarily the leading candidate. Beck told the Omaha Herald that Martinez, along with junior Cody Green, will be battling for the starting job with Kody Spano and Jamal Turner, who are apparently still in the mix. Martinez racked up some impressive numbers last season. Green started one game last year for the injured Martinez....a 45-17 victory over Colorado.

I'm not sure what kind of offense Beck is bringing in but he has served notice that his QB for next season will earn it.

One thing is for sure. Nebraska is going to have to become much more consistant on offense. They score 56 poinnts against Washington in the regular season meeting and 7 in the Bowl game against the very same team. They score 51 points in a game at Okie State, and 6 at Texas A&M. They score 48 at K. State, but get held to 17 at home by FCS South Dakota State. That is not going to cut it in the Big 10+2.

Martinez seems pretty unstable. Pelini has a lot of fire and Im not sure he and Martinez see eye to eye on a lot of things. There were rumors of him quitting the team this offseason and he had some struggles late in the year while battling injury. If these issues continue, I can see Pelini having a quick hook for someone like Martinez.

Martinez will probably win the starting job, but will be on a quick hook. He is one big mass of inconsistancy. The Corn Pluckers have nothing in the way of a non-con schedule in September, the toughest games being at home against Fresno State amd Washington. In October, things get real for Nebraska, with a game at Wisconsin followed by a home game against Ohio State. The only easy conference game Nebraska has is at Minnesota. I do not think that Martinez has the consistance to run the table for Nebraska. They are in a tough division (Legends) with Michigan State and Iowa always near the top, Northwestern who has the best coach in the Big 10 and can upset anyone, and Michigan, who shold be on the improve. Their permanent dance partner in the Leaders Division is Penn State. Nebraska sufferes anywheres between 2 and 4 losses. The question is will it be enough to win their division?

Bo Pelini said Thursday that if the season started today, Taylor Martinez would start the game over Cody Green and Brion Carnes. He said the competition would carry on into the fall. Brion Carnes was the highlight of the spring game completing 11 of 15 for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns. Martinez was only 4 of 13 with 1 interception.

The QB situation at Nebraska is still a mess. Martinez has his moments, but inconsistancy plauges him and this team offensively.
