i would go a step further than questionable, and say terrible hire

guy is in for a rude awakening and going to need a great defensive coach cause hes got an offense only background

This was a good hire. Not gonna move the meter with the fan base because too many rumors of bigger names were floated out there with no effort from the athletic department to quash them. The focus will be on how he assembles the staff. Many fans, including myself would prefer that Jay Graham and Sam Pittman stay on the staff. Talk is that Tee Martin is a possible addition as well. OC and DC jobs will be interesting, but as of now I would give this hire a B+ with the assumption that a quality staff follows. Definitely an upgrade from the previous hire.

i agree with most of the fanbase that it was a terrible hire

but hey, what could they do, no really good coaches wanted the job....so they got another average at best coach just like dooley was cause no1 else wanted to come here to this mess

tennessee athletics are in very very bad shape

    Fulmer is laughing right now.

Just kidding. Come on, man. Vols fans need a bit of a rude awakening.
Of course Jones is not Gruden, but he will be fine.
He is a solid coach. Definitely an upgrade from Dooley.

4 conference championships in 6 years. I dont care what level its on, that is impressive in itself. Chris Mortensen also approves "Caught flak for saying Bill O'Brien was right man for Penn St. Now I'll say this: Tennessee Vols got lucky with Butch Jones #lovethehire".

we just totally disagree on this 1

after numerous coaches said no, they were left with this

they settled as usual, just like last time because no good coach wanted the job....period.

rinse and repeat in 3 years

UT is in shambles right now

Was Strong a good coach? Just curious who your suitable candidates were. Im in the midset that Gruden was never an option and the others candidates like Strong arent much different in my mind than Jones. Gundy was a stretch to pull from his alma matter. Dont want to argue, you seem very passionate about that you dislike the guy. Does it help that the #1 Rivals Dual Threat QB is now in play for UT due to this hire?

Plenty of reasons to be skeptical but I tend to lean towards optimism given his past success. Go Vols.

im just sad to see tennessee be average at best....they have fallen hard and fast

and of course Strong is a proven great coach, and in SEC

guess what though, he didnt want to come here either..

and only uneducated vol fans gave a 1% to Gruden ...that was laughable

    i hope im wrong

Jones has stood toe to toe with Strong in the past 3 years beating him twice. Strong is a proven D Coordinator in the SEC and I would have been happy with him as well had he been hired. Strong is also a great recruiter. If UT does not get a quality D coordinator than I will rate this hire as a C+. I am in the mindset that Tennessee recruits itself due to its facilities, history and conference affiliation. I am not as worried about Jones on the recruiting trail due to his low recruiting rankings at Cinci because Kelly struggled in that respect as well. Kellys classes averaged around 72nd in the country, Jones is slightly better in the 50s. It's a wait and see, I am concerned more with the administration than I am with Butch Jones.

UT fans are upset for the most part, but the national media seems to think it was a solid hire.

Dave hart bungled the whole fukin thing no matter how you look at it. I am not sure he will be here in another year or two.

The key will be recruiting. If he can pull good recruiting classes everything will be fine.

Supposedly he has already reached out to Tee Martin. He needs to get him and keep Graham and Pittman. I wouldn't mind Chaney staying as well.

Kevin Steele's name was mentioned as D coordinator or another position on D, not from Jones, but on the radio.

I am taking a wait and see approach for now.

I am not happy or mad I am kinda in the middle I worry about a coach that dooley out coached, but he was 2-1 vs strong and beat James Franklin, It's imperative that he gets a solid D staff together, time will make my decision no need to be happy or pissed yet let time take its course and wins or losses will either make us happy or mad until then all we can do as a fan base is sit back and watch it unfold #GBO

How come Arkansas can get Bielema but Tennessee can't get a bigtime coach?

i dont think Bielema is a "bigtime coach", but arkansas has had ALOT more success than vols have in recent years and its just a better job than tenn. is right now

i do think he will do good at arkansas as his coaching style should do well in SEC imo

We were all set up for a major disappointment with all the rumors. I agree with missing the good old day on the Strip in Knoxville...I didn't miss a game for 4-5 years at one point. Only time will tell. GO VOLS!
