    2006 Oklahoma Football Breakdown

Bob Stoops has alot of returning talent this year, along with a great recruiting class comming in this year.

the sooners have 3 very key peices of there offensive team comming back this year. RB Adrian Peterson is a very solid hiesman hopeful canidate that returns to the sooners backfield and the sooners will focus there entire offense around him. Now that QB Rhett Bomar has a year of experience under his belt, I feel he should have a big year for the sooners. WR Malcom Kelly will most likely be Bomar's main target once again this year.

the sooners defense is stacked once again this year, and loaded with very seasoned upper classmen.

    Sep 02 Alabama-Birmingham
    Sep 09 Washington
    Sep 16 @ Oregon
    Sep 23 Middle Tenn St
    Oct 07 Texas
    Oct 14 Iowa State
    Oct 21 Colorado
    Oct 28 @ Missouri
    Nov 04 @ Texas A&M
    Nov 11 Texas Tech
    Nov 18 @ Baylor
    Nov 25 @ Oklahoma State
the sooners really only have 2 games that really pose a threat in the loss colum. the game that could be the season maker or breaker is the Texas game played in Dallas.

my projection for this years sooners team is that they run the table and win the national championship by going 12-0

Wow, ballsy call there, Dan! A&M looks to be there toughest non-home, non-neutral site game from my viewpoint.

If Bomar can be the man, it will be tough for opponents to stop Peterson. The whole thing hinges on Bomar. Dicey, man, dicey.

Ebone, the only thing that scares me about this years oklahoma team, is the fact that they tend to play up and down to there opponite way...way...way too much.

Yeah, they're going 12-0 unless they lose at A&M or Oregon. They will demolish Texas. As I mentioned before, I like Iowa as one of the teams in the national championship game, and this is who I have them playing (and losing to).

I actually do like their chances as I too feel that their 2 BIG games are at UO and the A&M contest ( they have barely survived in their 2 trips to college station under stoops). I feel the one make or break guy will be Bomar as they will go as far as his maturity can take him. AD will get his and I feel the D should be back up to par along with Stoops old teams. Either an INT or a missed FG or 2 will stop this team to making a booking to Tempe.

Krazy and I both mentioned that game. Here's the thing. I do think they'll win that game, though Autzen Stadium is among the most difficult places to play. But, Oklahoma's defense and running games are their strengths (though I expect Bomar to be 10 times better than people think - remember, he was the #1 QB coming out of high school two years ago, and he had definite improvements as last season progressed), so they should be a very good road team.
More importantly, that game is so early in the season, a loss won't doom their national championship chances.
The A&M game is more of a concern. OU should have lost there the year the won the national championship, and I expect an 8-0 OU team this season would have a real battle on their hands in College Station, even if the Aggies aren't up to par.

there goes my national championship winner

    August 2,2006

Oklahoma starting quarterback Rhett Bomar will not play for the Sooners this season following an investigation by the team, ESPN's Doug Gottlieb and Joe Schad reported Wednesday.

Sophomore J.D. Quinn, who was expected to start at guard, was also dismissed.

Oklahoma said that two players had been dismissed by the team but did not identify them. The school said in a statement that the players violated NCAA rules by working at a private business and taking "payment over an extended period of time in excess of time actually worked."

Bomar apparently filed for 40-hour work weeks at a Norman, Okla., auto dealership, making up to $18,000, when he only worked 5 hours a week, Schad reported.

The car dealership in question is Big Red Sports/Imports in Norman, Okla., reports Mark Schlabach. When contacted by phone, the person answering referred requests to attorney Jeffrey Atkins of Oklahoma City. The dealership is part of the Sooner Schooner Car Program, which supplies vehicles to coaches and athletic department officials.

In April, Oklahoma cleared standout running back Adrian Peterson, who purchased a vehicle from the dealership before securing financing, drove it for several weeks and then returned the car. Oklahoma investigated the situation, but ruled Peterson did not violate rules because the dealership said it was normal business practice.

"We spend a considerable amount of time addressing our players regarding their personal conduct and the NCAA rules," head coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. "They know exactly what we expect from them. Ultimately, they have to make right decisions. The same holds true for our boosters. When they do not, the consequences are serious, and we will not tolerate this behavior.

"Our team and university actions are necessary because of the intentional participation and knowledge of the student athletes in these violations," Stoops said.

A top-rated recruit out of high school, Bomar redshirted his first season while 2004 Heisman Trophy winner Jason White completed his career. Bomar lost a quarterback competition to Paul Thompson last fall, but was named the starter after the Sooners lost to TCU in the first week.

Bomar set an Oklahoma freshman record with 2,018 passing yards. He started Oklahoma's final 11 games and completed 54 percent of his passes, while throwing 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Oklahoma finished 2005 by winning six of its final seven games, including a victory against Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.

Quinn, who was Bomar's roommate, started four times at right guard last season but missed spring practice with an injury.

"I firmly believe that our program is stronger than any individual player and that a championship program cannot compromise its values," Stoops said in the statement.

Thompson, the only quarterback other than Bomar with experience at Oklahoma, was moved to receiver after Bomar became the starter. A backup in 2002 and 2003, Thompson played in a reserve role until he beat out Bomar last fall.

In his career, Thompson has completed 42 of 73 passes for 428 yards. He caught 11 passes for 106 yards after moving to receiver last season.

Other options would be Joey Halzle, a junior transfer who passed for 2,077 yards and 13 touchdowns in 10 games last season at Golden West (Calif.) Community College, freshman Sam Bradford and walk-on Hays McEachern.
