Remember, Remember the 5th of November,
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.
I see no reason
The gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
This one is about Guy Fawkes and why this Saturday, of many Saturdays, is special for us here at SBR. A brief history (for any that don't know) of Guy Fawkes: Guy Fawkes was a conspirator in the 17th century that plotted to blow up parliament and in the process kill King James. Those involved in the conspiracy were radical Catholics who sought to unseat a Protestant King from England's throne in favor of his daughter, Princess Elizabeth. Fawkes was caught smuggling powder kegs under Parliament after a traitor to the conspiracy wrote to a friend that it would be "unwise to attend Parliament". After being caught, Fawkes endured four prolonged torture sessions until finally confessing to the crime. This is of course a greatly abridged version, but one that will suffice.
So what does any of that matter? The metaphorical - and more recently literal - guise of Guy Fawkes has been donned over the years by many with which we share a metaphysical kinship. The bootleggers of the 1930's plied a trade they felt was just and profitable in an era where the government held strict ties on freedoms. We supported them by buying booze, having a great time at speakeasies and keeping our voices down when the sirens flared outside. In the 1950's we built Vegas into such a monument to decadence, lust and vice that we can only confide in friends who also have dark pasts. We hesitantly listened and read the ideas of radicals and weighed their ideology against our own. In the late 1960's and early 1970's we ceased to look at big brother as benevolent and began asking why; when we recevied no answer we came up with chemicals and freedoms they didn't know to take away before we had our fun. In 1989, the mask was worn by one faceless man in Tiananmen Square. Earlier in this Millennium and globally, we spent paychecks and rent money in the new inventions of on-line casinos and poker rooms, we helped build empires on nothing more than plastic cards and server-side sins.
All of it built up, enjoyed, experienced, reveled in, rebelled in and ultimately taken away by government mandate and regulation. We still wear our mask. If you are posting, lurking or given to any other action on this forum or countless others you believe in the freedom of personal expression and personal choice AND you should be damn proud of it!
Whether you are British, American, Colombian, Chinese, Australian or one of many other nationalities who's government doesn't believe you can make up your mind about how to spend your money or which vices to which you may adhere, you're presence here and/or on your personal sports-book of choice celebrates what you and many of those before us have held dear and secretly coveted. Vice is a beautiful thing.
This Saturday is the Super Bowl of college football for the year. I'm sure the BCS Bowl will have some action to it as well, but I think everyone here has been waiting anxiously for LSU @ Alabama. On Guy Fawkes day, I believe it only appropriate to do everything we can to bring down the house. This week I will only be posting my underdogs as a tribute to the man himself.
