On Friday night the Texas Rangers will open up a 3 game set in Arlington against the Boston Red Sox. The Rangers come into this game after splitting a 2 game series with the first place New York Yankees also in Arlington, Texas. They had a great chance to take the sweep of the series, but lost the second game of the two, blowing a save and the game in the 9th inning. The Red Sox come into this series also after blowing a game in the 9th, with their loss coming against the Toronto Blue Jays. They blew a 3 run lead in the 9th inning to lose the 3rd game of the series in Toronto. They still took the series however, winning the first 2 games of it. Both of these teams will be plenty motivated, as they both are looking to make a playoff run as we move towards the end of the season. The current line for this game has the Rangers set as -135 favorites with a run total set at 9.5 runs.
The pitching matchup in this game will put Tommy Hunter for the Rangers pitching against Josh Beckett of the Red Sox. Tommy Hunter has been a solid starter for the Rangers this year, especially when pitching in front of the home crowd. For the year, Hunter has a 3.01 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP against opposing hitters, compiling a 9-1 record. His numbers look even better pitching at home, with his ERA sinking to 2.53 and his WHIP at a solid 1.10. Hunter already pitched against the Red Sox this year at Boston, coming away with a win, giving up only 2 runs in 6.2 innings pitched. Josh Beckett has put some ugly numbers this year, pitching to a 3-2 record but with an ERA of 6.21 and a WHIP of 1.49. Beckett also pitched against Texas earlier in the year, giving up 7 earned runs in 7 innings. This start also came in Boston, where Beckett is a much better pitcher. The start for Friday is in Texas however, where Hunter pitches well and Beckett struggles with road starts.
The Texas bats scored 6 and 4 runs against the tough Yankees pitching staff in their 2 games. I think them starting their homestand on Tuesday will be the jumpstart that their offense needed. They have always hit better at home, in the Texas heat they have become accustomed to. Another positive thing going for them in this game is the Boston pitching, with Beckett starting and the Boston bullpen coming off another blown save. The Red Sox bats have also been hot coming in, but I feel this is due to the Blue Jays having nothing to play for moreso than the Red Sox hitting. Don't get me wrong, the Red Sox bats are hot right now, but I feel Tommy Hunter at home should be able to limit the Red Sox scoring in this game. I really expect the Rangers to be able to put up some crooked numbers in this game, as they did the last time they hit against Beckett. Play the Rangers ML -135 on Friday night against the Red Sox.
