    MLB Friday

    San Diego @ Pittsburgh

The Pirates have been putting on quite the fireworks show coming out of the All-Star break.

In the first seven games of a 10-game homestand that ends with this series, the Pirates have scored nine or more runs four times and have notched a total of 52 runs (an average of more than 7.4 runs per game). In their first 10July games, the Pirates had scored only 34 runs.

Overall, the Pirates have been playing well at home over the last month, going 9-5 in their last 14 home games. In those 14 home games, the Pirates have scored 83 runs, which comes out to an average of just under six runs per game.

Pittsburgh should be able to get their hacks in against Correia, who has a 2-2 record with a 6.49 ERA in seven road starts.

Correia has given up five or more runs in five of his last nine starts.

Correia has given up four or more runs in seven of his last 12 starts and in nine of his 18 starts this season.

Correia has given up four or more runs in five of his seven road starts.

Correia has given up two homers in four of his last six starts.

The run total has been eight or more in six of Correia’s seven road starts.

The run total has been eight or more in seven of Correia’s last nine starts and in 11 of his 18 starts this season.

The run total has been eight or more in six of Maholm’s nine home starts and in 10 of his 19 starts this season.

    Tampa Bay @ Clecveland

Carmona has four quality starts in a row and eight quality starts in his last nine starts.

Carmona has 12 quality starts in his last 14 starts, and overall this season, he has 16 quality starts in 19 starts.

Nine of Carmona’s 10 home starts have been quality starts.

In his last four starts, Carmona is 3-1 with a 3.66 ERA.

In his last seven starts, Carmona is 5-2 with a 3.91 ERA.

In 10 home starts this season, Carmona is only 4-4 with a 3.72 ERA, but in his last four home starts, he’s 3-1 with a 3.09 ERA.

Carmona has pitched well in two starts against Tampa Bay this season (both on the road), going 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA. In his most recent start against the Rays, he allowed only two runs and five hits in 6.2 IP in earning the win in a 9-3 Indians win.

Niemann is unbeaten on the road this season, going 5-0 with a 3.41 ERA in nine road starts, and the Rays are a perfect 9-0 in those starts.

However, Niemann didn’t have his best stuff in his previous two starts against the Indians, allowing three runs and 10 hits in a 4-3 win on May 17 and allowing three runs and six hits in a 6-5 win on July 11 (a start he left early due to a stiff back).

And the Indians have been on fire coming out of the All-Star break, sweeping Detroit in a four-game series and winning two of three at Minnesota.

The Indians are also 9-2 in their last 11 home games, and a lot of that can be attributed to good pitching. In those 11 games, the Indians have allowed more than three runs only twice – both in wins.

Interesting but insignificant stat time: The Rays have been alternating wins and losses coming out of the break, and if you’re a fan of following patterns, they’re in line for a loss tonight (their last game was a 5-4 win at Baltimore on Wed.).

    over Baltimore

Jeremy Guthrie (3-10, 4.58 ERA) mostly ineffective and 9-29 in night games the last two seasons. (O’s Record) Minnesota has finally taken Nick Blackburn out of the rotation and replaced with Steve Duensing (3-1, 1.67), who has made 39 relief appearances this year. Duensing went 5-1 with a 2.73 ERA in nine starts as a rookie in 2009 and it is forecasted he will be held to a pitch count of 60-80.
