Joey Votto has a chance to make baseball history tonight

Joey Votto reached base twice last night for the 20th consecutive game.
The record for reaching base safely is 21 consecutive times held by Teddy Williams.

I'll say it one more time, Votto is a first ballot Hall of Famer.

ok sam losco... a month from now ask 10 random baseball fans who holds the record for games in a row, in which they reached base twice or more

9/10 will laugh and 0/10 will know the answer

Votto one of top 5 hitters in the game right now. They used a 4 outfielder alignment against him the other night, guy still hit a double.

Its all anout hitting. Hitting fixes everything.

votto is a great player but there are way too many of these silly stats

oh wait, i think bogaerts just broke the record for most games in a row with at least 3 foul balls and a single

You just don't and won't ever understand the game of baseball. That's what the game is about, numbers. It is fascinating all the numbers and statistics baseball can and does produce. To each their own but you shouldn't knock statistics of any kind when referencing baseball.

    condescending much?

i'm knocking a thread saying "votto has a chance to make baseball history"

when almost nobody will ever know or care about this stat

i've been to more than a thousand baseball games in more than 30 different stadiums ... i've seen ACTUAL HISTORY, like robin yount getting a 3000th hit, rickey henderson breaking the single season steal record, etc... worked in a major league clubhouse where i met hundreds of mlb players for crying out loud, have you done that?

Now who's condescending. I'd venture to guess the number of people on the boards don't give a shit where you worked.
Have you ever played the game? I have. Do you have a college World Series at bat? I do.
It is a big deal, just because you say it isn't makes it so?
Research the names on that list, it is a big deal.

p.s. Votto singled in the first.

No I have not and I apologize. It seems to me you should enjoy stats like this. I sure do. Who cares what others will or will not remember. It's fun possibly seeing it happen.

The guy may do what's never been done before.
If he gets on base safely one more time, he ties the all time record.

Then he gets a chance to do what's never been done before.
They've been playing this game for a century and a half almost, to do what's never been done before is hardly worthless.

and you're right, i don't even give a shit where i worked! just pointed that out because i grew up in the game and was upset at the notion that i knew nothing about baseball. and yes i played college baseball, not in the college world series because i was division 3, so no scholarship either ugh

Does the fact that the average nitwit doesn't value something mean it isn't relevant or valuable?

Smart baseball minds have valued on base percentage more than batting average for a long time now.

Then we split the difference and agree to disagree and call a truce.
Reason why I, and other, but not everyone think it's a big deal is because whenever there's a chance of something happening in baseball that's never been done before it's special.

in the new baseball landscape where nobody bats a eye at 200 strikeouts and guys all swing for the fences every stinking pitch instead of attempt any kind of situational hitting I love watching votto who chokes up w 2 strikes and still puts up elite numbers without striking out a ungodly amount of times.

Not to mention Votto is among only a handful of great players that are members of the .300 .400 .500 club.

That being .300 lifetime batting average, .400 lifetime on base percentage, and .500 slugging percentage.

Nasher I was just looking around at guys numbers the other day and it was incredible to me how few guys I found that actually had more walks than strikeouts. I'm sure I missed a few cause I was just looking at guys in starting lineups that particular day. The list seemed incredibly small tho.

I'm not a big fan of this new way of thinking that it ok to strikeout all the fukkin time! It's the reason every night you see so many times a team has guys in scoring position less than 2 outs and don't score a freaking run. I find it incredibly frustrating that in general guys don't seem to be willing to do the little things that help a team win as they seem more concerned w getting their 20+ knocks strikeouts be damned no matter the situation.

I'm sure that a impressive list of names that on it. Off top of my head I can't think of many playing right now that on it. Id guess Pujols was on it when he left stl but his numbers have dropped off so much in laa prob not there anymore.
