It is basically an indication of ratio or return on the amount of money bet. In your example, you could win the following:


You bet $100, you get $118 ($100 X 1.18)
You bet $500, you get $590 ($500 X 1.18)

If, for instance, Atlanta happened to be -118, the following would apply:

You bet $118, you get $100 ($118/1.18)
You bet $590, you get $500 ($590/1.18)
