The Mets are primed for an upset here, as El Duque has a better ERA and WHIP than Wang this season and Rivera threw over 30 pitches yesterday.
The New York Mets have certainly been thorns in the New York Yankees’ collective sides in this series.
First, the Mets put an end to the Yankee nine-game winning streak on Friday by shutting down the Bronx Bombers 2-0, with Oliver Perez outdueling Roger Clemens. Then on Saturday, the Mets refused to give in even after falling behind 11-5, rallying for three runs in the ninth inning and leaving the bases loaded before finally succumbing in an 11-8 defeat.
Now we are getting a fat price on the Mets tonight, who should have an advantage in the late innings because Yankee closer Marino Rivera threw over 30 pitchers in that final frame yesterday. As for the starters, Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez probably deserves a better fate than his current 3-2 record, given that he has an outstanding 2.38 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 56.2 innings this season. He has incredibly allowed two runs or less in five of his last six starts, and he pitched extremely well in his last start vs. the Yankees right here in the Bronx last year, allowing just two runs in seven innings of a hard-luck 2-0 loss.
Now granted Chien-Ming Wang is also in fine form for the Yankees, but his 3.49 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, as great as those numbers are, are actually inferior to Hernandez’s numbers. Throw in the uncertainty as to the availability of Rivera, or his effectiveness even if he does pitch, and the Mets offer tons of value at the price, no doubt inflated by the fact that it is a marquee prime time ESPN game.
No, the line is short. The current form of both teams isn't likely to change with the starters on the mound tonight. Look who Hernandez has been pitching against compared to who Wang has been pitching against. It's about as drastic a difference as you'll ever find. There is no doubt that Wang, especially at home, is head and shoulders above El Duque, who will get his comeuppance tonight in a Yankees rout.
