Friday's Front Page Picks (May 25)

White Sox & Buehrle -130 over Devil Rays

    Game Time: 05/25/2007 08:10 PM -
    By: Marc Lawrence | playbook.com

The White Sox have won seven of Mark Buehrle’s eight starts this season, and with his recent home success during the month of May, look for him to dominate the Devil Rays here.

Mark Buehrle is off to a great start in 2007, and May is certainly his favorite month of the year.

This is especially true here at home, where the White Sox are a perfect 12-0 in Buehrle’s last 12 May home starts! They are also 7-1 in all of his starts so far this season.

Look for this to continue this evening, as the Devil Rays dip to 1-7 in road series openers this year.

    Free Pick: White Sox -130

Take Mets & El Duque -120 vs. Marlins

    Game Time: 05/25/2007 07:05 PM -
    By: Al McMordie | bigal.com

Orlando Hernandez has already tossed a gem here in Florida this season, and with Sergio Miltre’s recent success padded by some weak opponents, the Mets are the play on the road.

The two starters in this game, Mets right-hander Orlando Hernandez and Marlins right-hander Sergio Mitre, have very similarly impressive statistics on the season.

Hernandez has a 2.53 ERA and 1.09 WHIP, while Mitre has a 2.25 ERA and 1.10 WHIP, and the Marlins have won his last three starts after dropping his first four outings. On closer inspection however, two of those last three starts have been at Tampa Bay and at Pittsburgh, two of the weakest offenses in all of baseball.

Hernandez has been out for about a month with shoulder bursitis, and this is his first start since April 24. The injury was not serious however, and because of the depth of the Mets roster, they have been able to bring El Duque back slowly. He is definitely ready and recently threw 78 pitches in a simulated game without reporting any problems. He already has a very impressive victory over Florida earlier this year when he went seven solid innings giving up only 10 hits while striking out 10 Marlin batters.

The Mets are an incredible 21-8 in their last 29 road games, as well as 10-4 in their last 14 played on grass, while the Marlins are 1-7 in Mitre's last 8 home starts, so take New York.

    Free Pick: Mets -120

Brewers & Bush, Padres & Maddux Under 7½

    Game Time: 05/25/2007 10:05 PM -
    By: L.T. Profit Sports Group | who2beton.com

Runs have been hard to come by in San Diego all year for any team, and with Greg Maddux owning a 2.21 ERA and 0.84 WHIP at home, look for yet another Under tonight.

This may seem like a low total at first glance, but San Diego has the most pitcher-friendly stadium in the Major Leagues this season.

The Under is a lucrative 15-6-2 in all Padres home games this season, with an average combined total score in those games of only 6.17 runs per contest. Greg Maddux has certainly enjoyed the dimensions here, as he is 3-1 with a spiffy 2.30 ERA and a microscopic 0.84 WHIP in this stadium in a Padre uniform. Now David Bush has been exponentially better at home than on the road for the Brewers his year, but he did allow only two runs and four hits in 5.1 innings at Philadelphia in is last road start, and that is much more of a hitter’s ballpark than Petco is.

Finally the Padres have the lowest bullpen ERA in all of baseball at an outstanding 2.21, while the Milwaukee pen ranks fifth in the National League at 3.45.

Free Pick: Brewers, Padres Under 7½ (-110)

    Astros, Diamondbacks Under 10 (-115)

    Game Time: 05/25/2007 09:40 PM -
    By: L.T. Profit Sports Group | who2beton.com

The Diamondbacks and Astros barely went Over last night, but both teams still have strong Under tendencies this year, so look for a return to normalcy tonight.

These teams snuck over the total by one run last night, but we look for them to stay under this time around.

Even with the result last night, the Under is 28-17 in all Diamondbacks games this season and 24-20 in all Astros games. Arizona’s Edgar Gonzalez has now had two good starts in a row to lower his ERA to 4.81 and WHIP to a good 1.34, and he is facing a Houston lineup that is batting a putrid .189 vs. right-handed pitching in the last 10 games. Astro starter Woody Williams was hit hard by Texas in his last start, but he still has four Quality Starts in his last six outings, and the Diamondbacks are hitting significantly worse vs. right-handers (.241) than vs. southpaws (.262) here at home this season.

Finally, both of these bullpens are in the top half of the National League in pen ERA, which should limit late tack-on runs.

Free Pick: Astros, Diamondbacks Under 10 -115

    Rock with Royals vs Mariners

    Game Time: 05/25/2007 08:10 PM -
    By: Dave Price | procappers.com

The Royals have been hot and should grab another win tonight at home when Gil Meche pitches Kansas City past his former Seattle Mariners club.

The Royals are a scorching hot 8-3 over their last 11 games, and tonight's starter Gil Meche has been money for them this season pitching brilliantly with a 2.44 ERA.

Seattle's young phenom right-hander Felix Hernandez has been terrible in his last three starts with an 8.00 ERA during that span and is making just his third start since returning from a short trip to the DL. Meche has already got the better of his former club once this season and he'll make it twice tonight. Take the Royals showing good value as a home underdog.

    Free Pick: Royals +105

Hang with Hudson, Braves vs Phils

    Game Time: 05/25/2007 07:35 PM -
    By: Dennis Macklin | procappers.com

Coming off a series win over the 1st-place Mets, the Braves will keep things going tonight at home in Atlanta with Tim Hudson on the hil versus the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Phillies are just 3-6 in their last nine roadies and would appear up against it tonight facing the Braves and Tim Hudson.

The ancient Jamie Moyer toes the rubber for Philadelphia and he's been shelled to the tune of 15 earned runs on 23 hits and five walks in his last 16 innings (8.10) covering his last three starts. Moyer is 0-2 with a 4.36 ERA in three lifetime starts against the Bravos.

Hudson is having an All-Star first half at 5-2 with a 2.40 ERA, going 3-1 at Turner Field with his ERA just 2.00. The Braves are 7-3 in his 10 starts and Hudson has already beaten Philly twice in 2007 with sparkling 1.80 ERA over 15 innings.

The Braves are 4-1 as home favorites at this price, 7-1 at home with this opening total. Not a great number but as they say, you don't pay when you win. Take the Braves.

    Free Pick: Braves -158

Bet on Reds to plunder Pirates

    Game Time: 05/25/2007 07:10 PM -
By: Jimmy the Moose | sportspic.com

With a 7-3 record in Aaron Harang's starts, the Cincinnati Reds are the play tonight at home against Paul Maholm and the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.

Pittsburgh has dropped six of their last eight road games. Tonight they send Paul Maholm and his 2-6 record to the mound. His ERA on the year is 5.82 but over his last three starts it's gotten even worse at 6.38. The Pirates are 1-4 in his last five starts in Cincinnati.

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Aaron Harang is 5-2 this season and Cincy has won seven of his 10 starts. The Reds have won his last four starts vs. the Pirates. Pittsburgh is 2-6 in the last eight meetings between the teams in Cincinnati.

    Free Pick: Reds -155

I respectfully disagree with you on this one Mr.Lawrence. I do like the D'rays in this spot even despite how bad they are in series openers on the road.
