Drew Hutchison’s road struggles are well-documented but we couldn’t care less. After sitting in the dugout the past two nights and watching these South Side hitters swing at everything and hit nothing, Hutchison has to be feeling pretty good about taking the ball here. We’ll have a lot more to say about Hutchison when the time calls for it because he could be in for a big second half but in this game it isn’t relevant.


Against Mark Buehrle on Monday, the White Sox didn’t score an earned run and luckily defeated the Blue Jays 4-2. Yesterday against a career stiff, the South Side made Felix Doubront look like Sandy Koufax and lost 2-1. With Chris Sale and Jose Quintana starting (four hits in eight frames last night), the White Sox should be 0-2 in this series. Today, they’ll send out John Danks and that means a HUGE step down in class for these Blue Jays hitters, who ruin guys like Danks. We love that Danks is coming off a seven-inning, five-hit gem against the Orioles. Prior to that, the last time Danks luckily shut down a team was back on May 31 against the Astros when he threw a complete game 10-hit shutout. How unusual was that? Danks became the only pitcher to give up at least 10 hits and at least five extra-base hits in a shutout going back to 1914. That’s over 100 years ago. His next time out after that bizarre shutout, Danks didn’t make it out of the fifth inning after surrendering 11 hits and five runs in 4.2 frames. Danks has been batting practice out there all season long. Pitching for the South Side, Danks’ win expectation is extremely low.

Chicago has won six of his 16 starts and three of those were not his own doing. Danks is definitely leaving the ball up, as his 33% groundball rate is 10 points lower than his norm and his 42% fly-ball% is six points above. His fastball tops off at 88 mph and his off-speed stuff doesn’t come close to getting the league average swings and misses. If Danks wasn’t being paid 15.75M this season he would be in the pen with a clipboard in his hand doing pitch-counts or head counts. After starting a game in which he pitched seven innings or more over the past 2½ seasons, Danks’ ERA/xERA split is 5.42/6.88 and this year his skills are worse than ever. The Blue Jays are batting .309/.377/.501 (.878) against southpaws.

Over 130+ plate appearances, current Toronto batters own a hefty .960 OPS against Danks. Danks slots solidly in the fly-ball pitcher category and the Blue Jays crush fly-ball types to the tune of a .788 OPS.

If this were a horse race, the Blue Jays would be Secretariat and the White Sox would be Mr. Ed.
