    There have been 676 triple plays turned in major league Baseball, many more than other Baseball rarities such as no-hitters (257) and batters hitting for the cycle (284)

    Now if you want rare. There have only been 14 or 15 unassisted triple plays in MLB history.

    Also, only 15x a player has hit four home runs in a game.

    By comparision, they both are probably the rarest occurence in MLB history.

    thanks appreciate the info I should have stipulated unassssted triple plays as that was what I was wanting to know - 14 to 15 all up - impressive

    The rarest, in my opinion, is the back-to-back shut-outs or perfect games by the same starting pitcher. The name slips my mind right now but I lost a $500 wager on it years ago, looked it up and stored it away for future use. Give me some time and I'll come up with the name (I think ).
