    Why would he leave Williams out there to die in trying to protect a 2-1 lead in the 8th given how good their bullpen has been lately?

    i think walden and downs had pitched 3 or 4 consecutive days before yesterday, for whatever reason sco mustve wanted williams to go 8 and frieri to pitch the 9th. takahashi pitched 2 innings yesterday too but i'd still bring out walden or downs (whoever the setup guy is nowadays) for the 8th if i was managing
