The Orange's struggles were particularly noticeable in Weeks 6 and 7, as they experienced significant defeats of 40-7 and 41-3 against No. 14 North Carolina and No. 4 Florida State. Consequently, they entered their Week 8 bye seeking to regroup and enhance their performance in upcoming games.
Entering Thursday's game with a 3-4 overall record and a 2-1 standing in ACC play, Virginia Tech is favored, partly attributed to Syracuse's recent performance. As Syracuse heads into its Thursday night match against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, it has been outscored by a margin of 81-10 in its last two games. Although both of these games were against the supposed Top 2 teams in the ACC, both oddsmakers and sports bettors seem to still be affected by the one-sided nature of the losses. In my assessment of this matchup with the Hokies, I perceive the line movement as an overreaction.
The efficiency metrics prefer Syracuse over Virginia Tech in virtually every way. Even after Garrett Shrader's struggles over the past couple of games against Florida State and UNC, the Orange still rank 45th in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency. Despite getting 40-balled in consecutive weeks by the Seminoles and Tar Heels, the adjusted defensive efficiency metric still slots Syracuse 33rd nationally.
If we trust these numbers, the Orange simply have the better team. The Hokies rank outside the Top 70 FBS programs in both offensive and defensive efficiency. This is a matchup in which Syracuse should be able to get up off the mat.
