Illinois Becoming Major Player Online Betting

Illinois sportsbooks got off to a record-setting start in 2022, with their handle in January reaching a new monthly high of $867.5 million.

What's more, the new high in January came as online sportsbooks in Illinois were doing business with one arm tied behind their backs, so to speak. That’s because, until March 5, bettors in the Prairie State were still required to register in person for an online betting account through one of the sportsbooks’ casino partners.

    Online is king

Illinois sports bettors have indeed made it clear that their preferred method of wagering is online. Internet-based betting accounted for close to $830 million of January’s handle, or a whopping 95.6% of all wagers.

DraftKings and FanDuel continued to rule the roost among individual operators as well, combining for over $550 million of the state’s January wagers.

BetMGM, for example, recently joined the growing list of newcomers, going live in Illinois earlier this month. BetMGM joined six other online sportsbooks currently taking up residence in the state: DraftKings, PointsBet, FanDuel, BetRivers, Barstool, and Caesars.

DK stock price went from $75 to $15 in one year. Pretty soon they will be a penny stock. This is why they are limiting players.

JJ get a clue. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Why??? What'd they do to you?

I gotta believe DK is limiting more than hundreds of players.

There's probably room for at least 10 big ones to operate most places.

Been booted at the following places already:

    BetRivers/Sugarhouse
    FanDuel
    Draftkings
    Barstool

With all Risk Management basically said my action was not recreational. They want "recreational players only. And I did not fall into that category."
Why? Because I bet underdogs and unders?

Completely booted. First limited. Now booted. 80% of my action was live wagering.

    Connecticut.
But also wager in nearby states of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
I am 3 miles from the NY border and 30 miles from the NJ border. And can be in Pennsylvania in just under 2 hours.

I don't think you bot booted merely from live betting winning. I think you mentioned how you went to games and bet while you were there. I'm guessing that's why. In my experience, live betting -- even winning large sums -- will get you limited, some more than others, but not booted.

Yes, true. Except for BetRivers. They booted me for winning pregame bets on dogs and unders I think.
These books love Joe Q. Public who bets on favorites and overs.

Don't think I ever made a pregame bet on a favorite or an over...so they consider me sharp.
And I always bet into the best available underdog number or under number.

Rivers limits hard in the blink of an eye.

But a book like Fanduel has tended to be pretty reasonable. If they booted you, it was for more than just sharp betting or winning.

I'm new to betting at MGM. I'm betting only live and making a point to try to bet mostly faves and overs. Weird how those have actually tended to be the better bets.

Faves and overs have to hit sometimes!
Yes, as I said, the past-posting...clearing over $500K on hockey got me booted from these books, just like they did offshore five years ago. At least they all paid before locking my accounts!

Still some books I past-post goals on, but the options are getting smaller and smaller. VERY hard to do on radio now.

I'm lucky that three NHL teams play their home games within 15 miles of my office. I hate the "spinny wheel" but I still beat it more often than not.
