    Underlying Issue

The recent turmoil in the sportsbook industry is not "business as usual" as jj says, nor will it be in the future. This is a sign of things to come. As a Canadian, it doesn't matter much to me because our government doesn't try to govern things outside of our borders but for all you Americans, be worried. There's a reason the best book in the world (Pinny) hasn't dealt with Americans since day 1 -- it isn't viable or safe. All the recent poker busts is just more proof that the US is not going to allow offshore gambling, period. Sure, you can bounce to other books and new ones will open to take the emptied space in the market but you will always be on the run and shutdowns may not always go as smoothly as The Greek. All I can say is keep your ear to the ground and your balances low.

The US may try to force their hand in the issue but Canada has made up their mind on net neutrality and their stance is strong.

I don't think you know what that means tracy...

If I hadn't bumped your worthless thread to the top, it was headed to the second page to die with no replies. This post is at least somewhat original and informative, opening up discussion.

Very well thought-out, well written thread here, destroyer.

As much as it kills me to say it, I wish the US would follow Canada's example on this issue. Its disappointing that no matter how strong the book is that us Americans play at....there's always going to be that nagging worry in the back of your mind.

It is what it is, though. I'll still be playing at Heritage this Fall.

As a Canadian, all I know is only takes one swift change in policy, or a co-operative US / Canadian agreement, and we're done as well.

Are you 100% sure that in 10 years, Canadians will be free to choose and play where they want to? I'm not that confident.

Provincial lotteries, want that money, as they are opening up sites. If these sites make money, they will eventually shut down the others. I had an informal off the record meeting with a couple BCLC folks, and the idea I came away with is, inter Canadian sites may be the only option in the future.

The real shame with Canada/US gambling relations is basically Canada is one of the few countries with a useless USA tax treaty. If you goto the vegas and win over $4999 in poker tourney, or over $1199 on a progressive, you automatically are deducted 30%. Almost no other country has this happen. There are ways to get that 30% back. But overall it's a joke!

U havent been on betfair have you :-) I think the international gambling industry would survive no worries with less USA money in books. Besides, ur $ is only travelling one way so its impact is becoming less and less anyway

@madtiger I was going to write since "day 2" because I know Americans use to be able to play at Pinny... but if anything, it just proves how Pinny is always ahead of the pack.

@kirk Disagree... The only way Canadian sports lottery offerings stay competitive is if they change to the standard Vegas model because
Canada will NOT change their stance on net neutrality. The States have shown how costly it is to try and police the internet internationally.

@frizzelli You're soft and a mush. Can't wait for our date.

Who cares about any of this. Figure out where you want to bet, and just do it. Keep on top of things and stop wasting everyone's time. There will be so much flux in all of this it's pretty useless to make predictions at this point in time.

The thing is Canada does not have the long arm outside its borders that the Us does. There is no Canadian "DOJ" that is going to take a dump on Pinnacle or Bodog. America is also never going to go so bat shit crazy that Canadians are gambling offshore and make our govt do something (which it can't do anyways). The best solution is Canada grants Pinnacle a license to operate in our country. I don't know why they think they should be the ones dealing lines with their idiotic parlay cards. Let professionals do it and take your cut.
