How much money do you need to own a race horse?

And I'm not talking about the money you need to just buy a race horse. I'm talking total amount of money that includes training, feeding, vets, entry fees, etc.

Will $100,000 last for a year or do you need more?

Biggie could probably chime in, but it depends on what kind of racehorse. Are you racing 5k QH claimers at Ruidoso Downs or what??

I just saw an ad for myracehorse.com where you can buy shares of horses. Haven't looked into it but the idea is kind of cool.

the three horses on that site currently offering shares look legit. The favorite at Monmouth today in the Haskell is a horse that has fractional ownership. I have no idea what the ROI looks like on these things but I imagine if you hit a large purse, you can make a little coin.

are you talking about an average, every day horse?

Monthly expenses are about $6k a month
no entry fees unless they are going into a special or stakes race

Yes we want to start small first. So if it's $6,000/month is not bad. We will practice harder than other horses to make up for the lack of great gene pool.

Join a syndicate and buy shares in horses

I own shares in 4 horses right now.

You get access to the stable, winners circle, and you can be put in drawings to get into the paddock.

    Also invites to owners parties.

You won’t make much money and will probably lose but it’s a cool way to enjoy your horses journey.

It's not really an investment..My dad has owned horses or shares in horses for the better part of 25 years now. i believe he has had 2 years in which he made profits and the rest of the years were losers. The estimates of costs posted here are pretty much accurate, although the day rate for trainers will vary by the size of the race track. There will also be bills for vets, etc, and generally 10% of all winnings will go to the jockey and the trainer. Just an estimate, but $150 a day for training would be $4500 a month plus other expenses. During the off season my dad has horses on the farm, and costs at that time are 10-20% of the costs during the racing season.

Not sure how you figure this. Five of eight races this coming Wednesday at Canterbury have a purse $12,000 or less. At 60% to the winner that's $7200-$720 to jockey and trainer =$6600 in winnings. A horse would have to win 7.5 races to get back $50,000 in expenses.
Not many horses win 7.5 races a year, and due to soundness issues a lot may not even race that many times, or not even make it to the races at all.
I spent six months owning 10% of three horses which cost me $2800 in expenses and I got back a whopping $280 in purse money.
In my book there's not much worse for the bankroll than gambling...But owning horses is certainly one of them.

I haven't been, but may think about it. Horse races are as tough to beat as any other form of gambling, a 20% takeout or 30% for some exotics is huge I have a brother in law who plays contests only. He has qualified for NTRA and NHC handicapping tournament almost every year, and he has pretty much made a living that way, (cashing $100,000 plus a couple of times). But he gave up on straight betting a long time ago, admitting to me he can't beat the takeout. I have gravitated to mostly contests myself now, and have done well at lower levels, but can't match up with the big boys (LOL).

Certainly possible if you want to look at it as a way to get some entertainment, free admission to the clubhouse and backstretch, and possible some tax writeoffs. I would consider this similar to a members fee at a golf club. But the last thing I would be doing is looking at it as an investment.
