Why are airport buildings so high?

I couldn't find the answer through Google. This question has plagued me for minutes at a time!

Because the airplanes are pretty tall. Unless you want to get out of a plane in a chute and land on the ground.

I'm not talking about a hangar, but the lobby area with stores and shit. I guess I'd say it looks like a hangar inside. I can't remember any of the few airports I've been to not having really high ceilings for that area.

Well the door of the plane is very high (especially for 747's) so if the 2nd floor is not high enough they will need a pretty long jet bridge to transition between floors.

maybe engineering/maintenance/longetivity wise its simpler to build a single roofspan at one height/level rather than stairstepping all over the place ?

Also if the roof transitions a lot between levels it creates snow drifts on lower roofs and it becomes expensive to build. It also creates wind tunnel effects that can be dangerous on planes landing.

You know when they build airports they don't do any engineering studies or design. They just go to the lumber yard and the steel mill grab some 2x4's and steel beams and have Bubba and Jose build the airport.
