If the employers paid decent wages like everywhere else in the world the tips wouldn't be an issue. Pay your employees more and increase the menu prices so you won't have to worry about cheap tippers.

    Completely different issue

I guarantee you these bad tippers aren't doing so to make a statement about small business economics

The point in not the bad tippers. The point is if you include the tip into the price of food or drinks then you are collecting equal tips from everyone, good and bad tippers.

Not that easy..the profit margins r so small in the restuarant business. You raise prices on the menu you risk the lose of people coming in. Why you think in most restaurants the kitchens r filled wth illegals and front of house is usually collage kids waiting tables.

Look I agree with you and think tipping isn't a great system most of the time but that isn't the topic of the thread and it doesn't excuse people for not tipping.

Restaurants Are Dying; Here’s the Solution

It’s simple math, but the state of California refuses to allow it

Rising labor costs are the single biggest threat the restaurant industry has faced in a long, long time. The closing of two recent high-profile restaurants in San Diego has made it a hot topic again. Last year, I talked to dozens of experts to come up with fair solutions. Here, I’ve condensed all of my research and perspective on it into one space.
Last year, San Diego’s beloved Cafe Chloe closed after 14 years. Last week, iconic Urban Solace did the same. For two years, mom-and-pop restaurateurs have told me this would happen. And now it is.

There are many reasons restaurants close. But one reason comes up again and again—California is raising minimum wage without letting restaurant owners count tips as wages, and yet still taxing restaurateurs on those tips. It’s a financial double-whammy they can’t recover from.

PS - Its almost always the government's fault.

exactly, but people dont have the ability to think they just go along with whatever is fed to them. by compulsion the whole tip thing is fed to the masses to foster guilt employer should pay what their supposed to pay somehow theyve gotten off the hook cant they even pay below minimum wage I have a decent clue who started all this

this is incorrect...tips are an incentive for providing a level of service....why should all employees get the same compensation for different levels of service...

that becomes a very broad field and there are a ton of attendant/customer exchanges where a tip is never customary I see no reason that onus should be automatically levied from employer onto customer in those fields Im referring to those jobs where they could be paid under minimum wage

The short time i worked in service-restaurant business, no one claimed anywhere close to what they made in tips. If you made a $100 in tips on your shift you told the manager you only made $10-15. Cash definitely wasn't getting counted. If all your tips happen to get added on to the credit card bill then you were screwed. But a majority were cash, so it was easy. Also back in the day, servers were required to tip out the busboys and expediters from their own tips. So that was another reason to claim you didn't make anything to keep from having to give more back to them. But for past 15-20 years I don't know who my server is anymore. You get a greeter to seat you and sometimes give a menu, or maybe the server will approach and give menu and take drink order. Then you might have that same person bring the drinks or sometimes someone else brings them. Then the alleged server might take the food order and after that it's food runners or even kitchen managers bringing the food out. Then they'll ask if you need anything else. Then another server might show up to ask how you're doing. then at the end the original server shows back up with the check. And i've noticed after i pay the bill and am leaving the server and maybe other servers will be busing the table.
So i don't know who all actually deserves a tip anymore.

Actually tipping too much is MY ONE BIGGEST FAULT. I'm ALWAYS over-tipping.

The reason I started this Thread was because I was at the Newport Club at Foxwoods Casino. There were three Asians tables with four Asians at each table and our server was Asian. All three tables got up and left without leaving the server a penny. I know, I get it, it's just not part of their Asian culture to tip. But this isn't Asia. It's a high-stakes casino comp lounge in CT.

Solo flight for me so I'm alone and just had nothing better to do than watch this unfold. So the server comes over to my table and asks if I need anything else. I said, "No thanks, I'm good". Dropped $10 on the table and told her, "You'd better take that now because I notice tips don't happen often here". She winks at me and just says, "It depends. Some good people do". And walks away.

    Fukk you and your tips.

Millions of jobs with people doing the lowest of the lowest work yet they don't get any tips. Total bs that people who serve food must be tipped. Oh they serve food at McDonalds do they get any tips?
