    How can I hedge this?

In a playoff pool, tied with 2 others. Invested $100.00, win is $2100.00. Me and 1 other MUST take NE, we already used Seattle, the other has his choice. The tiebreaker is closest to the total score. I think the game will be low scoring, maybe 40-44 points. Not sure of what the others will guess for the total but if NE wins, I need to be closest to win. If I bet Seattle and NE wins, I still need to be closest to the final score to win the pool. I can lose both if NE wins(I bet Seattle) and I lose the total. Any thoughts??
    Thanks.

If the vegas line for the total is 48 I'd want to be on 44-45 even if I leaned towards the under. If he wants to go under that he'll be giving away too many points, let him.

    Very shrewd

I use this technique in suicide pools every year and it generally pays off

    Handicap the handicapper....
like watching a poker opponent for "tells"

You cant hedge this when the tiebreaker is a 50/50 shot (the point total). For you to win the 2,100, you MUST have New England win AND be closer to the points than the other person that bet New England. You cant hedge out of that scenario.

    Think of this this way:

You bet Seattle to win 1,000. They win. You are up $900.
If they lose, and you lose the points - You are down 1,100.
If they lose, and you win the points, you are up 1,100.

There's no way to hedge total points unless you know what the other guy is picking for his total. If you knew that, then you could do it.
