ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Anchorage police say they have identified a suspect in the beating deaths of a couple and the sexual assault of their great-grandchild.

Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz (SLAHV'-oh-meer MARK'-eh-witz) says the suspect is 24-year-old Jerry Andrew Active.

Active was arrested about a block from an apartment where the bodies of

71-year-old Sorn Sreap and 73-year-old Touch Chea were found Saturday night by their granddaughter, who had returned from a trip to a movie with her husband and 4-year-old son.

The couple found their home locked from the inside.
They broke in through a window and discovered the bodies and a naked man with their toddler in a bedroom.

Markiewicz says they tried to detain the man but he fled.

Police say both Chea and the toddler had been sexually assaulted.

He refused to give his name. He's being held without bail at the Anchorage Jail on charges of first and second-degree murder, sexual assault and burglary in the deaths of Sorn Sreap, 71, and his wife, Touch Chea, 73.

Police in an announcement said both Sreap and Chea had suffered significant blunt force object injuries and that Chea had been raped. Police department spokeswoman Anita Shell said on-scene investigators were affected by the brutality and the ages of the victims.

"They said this was the worst thing they had ever seen in their lives, and these are seasoned detectives," Shell said.

The couple were babysitting for their 2-year-old great-granddaughter, who was found with what police said were sexual assault injuries. The toddler was taken to an Anchorage hospital and underwent surgery, police said.

The toddler's parents, along with their children and their own 90-year-old great-grandmother, lived in the same east Anchorage apartment as Sreap and Chea, police said.

On Saturday night, the couple took their older child, a 4-year-old boy, to the movies and left the toddler with Sreap and Chea in a first-floor apartment.

The parents of the toddler are in their 20s. They told police they arrived home to find the apartment door locked from the inside.

The couple forced their way in through a window and found the bodies of Sreap and Chea.

A man in his 20s, they said, was naked in a bedroom with their daughter. The man during the confrontation managed to put boxer shorts on and ran.

Police took a 911 call just before 8 p.m. Dispatchers could hear screaming and a woman said a man had broken into her home and killed her grandmother, Chea.

The woman described the man as tattooed and fleeing in underwear.

Police detained the suspect about a block from the apartment.

Shell said the suspect was arraigned Sunday.

The bodies of Sreap and Chea were taken to the state medical examiner's office for autopsies.
N
ames of the toddler and her parents were withheld.
