    a. Yes. You are applying an external force in the direction that the rubber band stretches. Of course, if you stretch it in both directions an equal distance, zero net work will be done.
    b. Energy is stored within the rubber band in the form of elastic potential energy.
    c. By releasing the rubber band back to its unstretched length.
    d. By releasing the rubber band and causing it to apply a force on an object as its elastic potential energy is converted to kinetic energy. For example, releasing it behind a small toy car would cause the car to travel in the same direction as the force, so work would be done.

    2.
    a. Yes. You are moving a book a distance y above the ground by applying an external force when you lift the book. The force is in the direction of the motion (upwards) so work is done. (W = Fd)
    b. The energy is stored within the book in the form of potential energy.
    c. By lowering (or dropping) the book back to it's original height off the ground.
    d. By dropping the book onto an object so that it travels a distance. For example, dropping the book onto a spring will cause it to compress, so work is done on the spring (by the book).
