Joey Meyer (DePaul bask) - dead at age 74

    https://www.chicagotribune.com/sport...qhe-story.html

Had a very tough task of replacing his dad at DePaul. RIP, coach.

DePaul was on the decline at the end of his tenure, but at least they still had an identity. That program has been totally lost since Joey was relieved of duty.

Yeah, KLC. Think back to the days of Mark Aguirre and Dallas Comegys.

Fun fact: Ray Meyer made it to the Final Four in his first year at DePaul. It took him 36 years to get back there when Larry Bird and Indiana State knocked them out in 1979.

    That's good stuff.

One other key game from that year. IndSt (with Bird) narrowly beat Arkansas (with Moncrief) in the Regional Final.

If Ark beats IndSt, does the rivalry become Magic versus Sid?

KLC, go to the post-game of the above link. Some very good interviews.

Ray Meyer handled it as well as a guy could.

    Here's the Ark/IndSt game I referenced:

As for Joey, that was a tough guy (Ray) to replace. Talk about casting a shadow over your successor.

Jerry West actually wanted to draft Moncrief over Magic. Makes you wonder if they would of if Arkansas had advanced further.

Another way to look at it is that Ray Meyer didn't start having his dominant teams until Joey started being his assistant coach. He had good teams before then, but he wasn't a consistent postseason coach until then.

Yeah, KLC. I know that Joey was well-regarded. Back then, the DePaul/Marquette rivalry was big.

Maybe so. When Sid had his legs, he could jump out of the gym.

Sir Sid was really a fantastic two-way player. Bucks had to go thru Phi/Bos and never got out of the East.
