The Malkin injury changes the landscape of Odds to win the cup

As we went into the All Star Break, Pitt and Vancouver were the top favorites at +500 with Philly at +600. Malkin's knee blows up and everything changes. Updated odds:

    Philly +300
    Vancouver +350
    Detroit+450
    Boston +600
Pittsburgh slides all the way down to +800

The Oilers still remain the best value at +50000.

Tampa Bay is an insane +3000. I would say 164 GF vs 162 GA is your answer there.

Weird team, masters of the 1 goal win.

Quite a bargain at that price actually.

It takes so much luck to win a Cup. No team is going to win on talent alone anymore. Any top 8 team in the league is worth a shot. Wide open this season.

But you definitely need at least two lines that can score consistently, or you are fukked.

Talk about no value and crappy odds. Who would ever play those odds on those teams?

I have Boston +2550 and I think they are average.

The NHL is not the NBA

IF boston played new jersey right now in a playoff series. What do you guys think the odds would be?

Vancouver will be happy to get past the 2nd round. They can't even beat Chicago unless the refs help them.

+300 philly to win the cup

Could have just played philly -125 to win the division which is basically a lock.

It is close to being so now, wasn't when Malkin was in there. I mean Vegas didn't even move Philly past Pit to win the cup until this injury, and for good reason too. Unlike my bullies who can rip off 10 in a row then take a night off and lose 4-0 to the Lightning or 7-1 to Florida Pit plays hard every night, but they just don't have enough without Malkin in there.

Boston is nothing short of lethal, awesome odds you got on them. I do think once again they will clash with Philly to go to the cup. Flip a coin on the winner of that. Thomas and Chara just scare me.

You can still get boston at like +1500 at some places if you like them that much.

I just pick up every team that can make the playoffs at the highest possible odds.

Can Vancouver actually get past the 2nd round of the playoffs though...I know this year it seems like everything is going in their favor but....I still have my doubts.

How can you not. The Sedins haven't proven they can win jack sh*t and sure Luongo did in the Olympics but dude look how damn stacked that team was. I am not drinking the Vancouver Kool Aid either. Detroit feels like watching Bambi walk through the forest - can get destroyed by injuries at any moment in time.

I do still think SJ is a very sexy sleeper out there. Add this Couture kid to an already very deep and balanced team and it can go places.

I worry about the Pens so much. Sid is still not back and with Malkin out for the year.....I don't see them making much of a run. They have been able to win 8 of 10 even with all the injuries but long term and against the elite teams in this league they are in trouble.

It seems as though the team is being SUPER cautious with Sid's head injury (as they should be), so who knows when he will be back. Another player on the team needs to step up so that Crosby doesn't have to put the entire team on his back. It would be a great time for Staal to play up to his potential this year.....

Pens can get someone at the trade deadline for Malkin's cap.

    Amby,

Crosby is ok. He's in Halifax right now spending some time with his family. The kid is not being rushed back for obvious reasons. He's the face of the NHL and will still win the MVP award. Malkin will be traded within 2 years and the return will still be huge even with his bum, knee. This is the perfect time for Staal to step up and show what he can do on the top line(s) adn also a good opportunity for a young prospect like Tangradi. The last thing the Pens need is to trade for Kovalev. This is the big rumor up here, but that is a horrible move. They need to pick up a player like Versteeg and/or Kaberle from Toronto. I think your prospect pool is pretty thin, but if you were to get a Versteeg type of player then Tangradi is likely done in Pitts.

Who will the Pens give up though?? Their prospect pool is very thin right now. Their only bargaining chip is Eric Tangradi. The rest are low level 3rd/4th liner propects.

If they trade Malkin then they will get a boat load of talent and tons of cap space for future years.

Yeah i think you are right about Malkin being all but done in Pittsburgh. I really think the Pens were hoping to get one more Stanley cup out of the Crosby/Malkin duo but that might be asking for too much.

Come this off season Pit will probably be shopping Malkin around quite a bit. I know the Pens really need to free up some cap space and that would be the easiest and most sensible way to do it. Get some young talent in return to boost the farm system for either a run next year or for trade bait for another cheaper top line player, if there is anyone else out there that can be gotten...

The Pens will get a ton for Malkin Amby. Even with his bum knee and a couple off season he'll bring in a very nice return. Still good times ahead for Pitts.

Pens can't score now, crosby could be out till march, could be a hard fall.

    Maybe they'll trade for Kessel

Bruins need to make a trade for a sniper or an offensive defenseman for me to think they have any shot at winning the cup. Sharks choke every year, I kind of like the Canucks this year for some reason. I don't like the Hawks goalie situation. Turco is past his prime and I don't see Crawford doing what Niemi did last year. Just my opinion though.

Caps and Sharks odds should still be available.

    The rest in your dreams.

Sports Interaction has Wash 10 to 1, 5dimes/greek has +845

San Jose just got pounded at thegreek, 5dimes still has +2400, which is not bad.

I posted some of the odds earlier thru out the season but there's not that much interests usually because don't understand you have to buy low, sell high and see a team struggling so they think they suck, that's when I scoop them up.

Mind you most people don't even know what to do with a +8500 team that makes the playoffs.
Its basically a lock of profit in hockey.

I disagree. the 7 game format eliminates "luck." However, a lot of teams that find themselves in the bottom half of the seeding have success. The postseason is much different than the reg and goaltending, veteran leadership, and special teams make the difference. Look for the Flyers to make a very deep run this season.
