NFL owners approving a massive revamp of the kickoff play.

    I think I like it.

NFL is practically unbettable now... It was already a tough market to beat, but the banning of the hip-drop tackle just throws another wrench into the whirlwind of variance that is left entirely to the discretion of the men in stripes.

You can't handicap a game that comes down to the opinions of non-players. Every single play yields potential for a personal foul now and the complexion of games are completely altered as a result

Ridiculous to fukk with kickoffs. If they don't want collisions, eliminate kickoffs and make it an automatic touchback.

I hear what you are saying but isn't this better than what they are doing now when almost every kickoff goes through the end zone? I can't wait when the returner breaks one and the only the kicker is 20 yards down field with last chance to stop him.

I don't think people, especially casuals, understand how dramatic these new infractions are. They just gloss over them as if they are offseason footnotes. They're game changers. Think of how many outcomes have changed over the years due to a helmet-to-helmet, a low tackle on the quarterback, hands to the helmet, launching, leading with the helmet, landing on the quarterback with bodyweight etc... Many of which are subjective calls at best, or, as we've seen in the past, complete botched officiating at worst. And that's before we even get to the pass interference or illegal contact calls.

This "hip-drop" thing is total rubbish and there's a reason why the players were against making it illegal. How are you supposed to make a tackle if you're trailing a player with the ball? Inevitably your body weight is going to assist the tackle unless you just plan on escorting the ball carrier into the end zone.

A bunch of old suits who never played the game are legislating it and it makes no sense.

The players are now battling their opponents while also hoping to be on the right side of weekly penalty roulette. That's the game. The zebras have every bit as much influence as the men in pads, and in some cases more. History is being rewritten. Victors become losers and losers become victors.

Agree. Forcing a return every time makes the play more interesting. As well as having the teams close together solving the cries that kickoffs are physically extra dangerous as is.

Surprise onside kicks are gone now. And if you do want to try an onside kick everyone lines up like they used to, so cat’s out of the bag there. Not like you can recover them anyway with those recent rule changes…

More exciting? Sure Better? No. Playing carnival games with the rules is foolish; kickoff returns involve high speed collisions and if the NFL determines that injury rates are too high then kickoffs should be eliminated, if they want the excitement then be prepared to accept the inevitable injuries.

They are going to have to try and grab them and keep them up until they get help. Probably draw a spearing call.
When the help comes they can’t lead with the head or hit the guy too high or too low. Can you imagine losing a bet on that?
The players might be better off but the bettor will probably kill themselves. Lol.

Gotta wonder how the totals will adjust. How many points will this be worth?

It's gonna get to the point where defenders are so cautious to make a legal tackle that they themselves are forced into some unnatural movement in the heat of the moment and become susceptible to injury. But I guess the league doesn't really care about protecting defensive players, they just want the fantasy stalwarts to stay on the field.
